As a Fulbright scholar, he studied with the painter Giorgio Morandi in Bologna, Italy. He has had the distinction of presenting solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris and was selected in 2004 to receive the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s lifetime achievement award. In 2010, Glaser became the first graphic designer to receive the National Medal of Arts. He opened Milton Glaser, Inc. in 1974 and continues to produce a prolific amount of work in many fields of design. SCPS.NYU.EDU/LANG FOREIGN LANGUAGES, TRANSLATION, AND INTERPRETING Learn a new language, improve your skills, or acquire the expertise to be an interpreter or translator. NYU-SCPS offers a variety of formats and levels in more than 25 foreign languages. If you are interested in furthering your career, consider courses in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or Arabic, which are becoming increasingly important in the business and nonprofit sectors. Courts and healthcare organizations require well-trained, highly specialized interpreters and the need for translators in government, the corporate world, and the international arena continues to grow. Our offerings in Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting include: • Courses in a wide range of formats and levels to suit your schedule, interest, and ability. • Private instruction for individuals whose schedules are not suited to regular class times or groups that have specific language needs. • Certificate programs: Foreign Languages, Court Interpreting: Spanish/English, Medical Interpreting, and Translation (Online). • NEW M.S. in Translation: offered online, this graduate program equips students with expert translation skills and critical knowledge of translation theory, and new technologies in the professional disciplines where demand is greatest. CONTENTS Advisement, Placement, and Proficiency Testing 1 FOREIGN LANGUAGE ADVISEMENT, PLACEMENT, AND PROFICIENCY TESTING Throughout the year, NYU-SCPS offers courses in more than 25 languages. At every level, the emphasis is on the language as a vehicle for direct, immediate communication. A broad range of schedules and course formats is designed to meet a variety of interests and needs. Individual and small group instruction are also available. Take an individual course that meets your needs or consider the Certificate in Foreign Languages (page 158). Come to an information session (page 157) to meet our staff and faculty members. Have all your questions regarding your choice of language, course type, and placement answered according to your individual goals. PROFICIENCY TESTING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES Proficiency tests are available for people wishing to measure their knowledge of a foreign language. The results of the tests, which are transcripted by NYU, may be used by universities to grant academic credit or award advanced placement. They may also be used for professional purposes, such as teaching certification, and to establish linguistic competence for business objectives. Tests are given by appointment. The test also may be administered at off-site locations in the U.S. or abroad. Exam fees for fall 2011 are $300 for 12-point (two-hour) exams; $400 for 16-point (three-hour) exams; and $120 for four-point (one-hour) exams. There is an additional registration fee of $20. The maximum $20 registration fee is payable only once each semester, no matter how many times you add courses. Your exam and registration fees are due on the day of the exam. Registration fees are nonrefundable. All payments must be made by credit card or money order in U.S. currency only. The exam fee covers one official letter sent to a designated institution and one copy for the student’s records. Additional letters may be requested for $15 per language exam. New York City residents must take the test at NYU. Exceptions are considered on a case by case basis. For further information, to make an appointment, or to request a brochure, call (212) 998-7030.
