Paint The Town Pink…Pinkbury!!!!<br />

The town of <strong>Shrewsbury</strong> held the event, Paint The Town Pink, on the<br />

week of May 4-12 th . This event was held to raise money and<br />

awareness to have all women in our community realize the importance<br />

of getting checked for breast cancer. We feel this was a great cause<br />

here in <strong>Shrewsbury</strong>, and the students of SBS were happy to be involved.<br />

It was a great opportunity to help women to go and get checked<br />

because early detection of anything is key. This event provided women<br />

with the chance to be checked even if they did not have health<br />

insurance.<br />

At SBS we decorated our homeroom doors pink in honor of Pinkbury.<br />

Teachers wore denim if they donated to the cause and to help raise<br />

awareness. Student council had a bake sale and all the proceeds went to<br />

“Pain The Town Pink.” Some art classes decorated paper bags that<br />

helped “light the night pink!”<br />

We thought this was a great way to make a difference in the lives of<br />

the women in our community. Pinkbury was a huge success and we hope<br />

many women are healthy because of this opportunity provided by our<br />

community.


3 rd Annual Variety Show<br />

The talent shower was absolutely wonderful. It took place on<br />

Friday, March 9 th . It was the third annual show and the<br />

performers did great! We need to thank Mr. MacConnell, the<br />

program directors, Mrs. Neary and Mrs. Polis for allowing the<br />

students at SBS to have the opportunity to partake in this fun<br />

event. To add on, LionWhale Music and Mr. Green added the<br />

sound, and also, stage crew helped out, so thank Matthew<br />

Cindrario. Our MC’s announced our performers, and these two girls<br />

were Katherine Villaluz and Maggie Cahill, which both deserve a<br />

round of applause. Our performers were:<br />

Mrs. Neary also added, “The performers did a good job and I<br />

am proud of them. Thank you to Mr. Clar, Mr. Havard, and Mr.<br />

MacConnell.” This variety show was great and was proudly<br />

presented by the <strong>Shrewsbury</strong> Parent-Teacher Group.<br />

MR. HAVARD,TEACHER (OR DRUMMER?) OF THE YEAR<br />

To most students in our school, Mr. Havard is just the seventh grade math teacher. To some,<br />

he is also known as the girlsʼ soccer coach. To younger students, he is the crazy teacher who<br />

plays in the talent show with Mr. Clar. But to the seventh graders, he is more than just the math<br />

teacher. He is the math teacher who plays the drums and talks about his three-hour band practices<br />

at the end of class. He is the math teacher whoʼs homeroom (shockingly) won the door decorating<br />

contest for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade homerooms. He is also the math teacher who often<br />

dresses up his sentences with the words “dude” or “man”, and can always be found in class with a<br />

new piece of exotic fruit. Mr. Havard can really be called anything along these lines, and now he<br />

can add a new title to his resume: 2011-12 Teacher of the Year.<br />

Mr. Havard has been at SBS for a long time, as both a student and a teacher. He attended SBS as a child, and, if you look<br />

at the class picture in his classroom, was in Mrs. Maloneyʼs class. When I was in third grade in Mrs. Maloneyʼs class, Mr.<br />

Havard was an assistant teacher for us for part of the year. Once, when Mrs. Maloney was absent, he had us play Hangman<br />

to guess his middle name. In the 2008-09 school year, Mr. Havard began teaching as a seventh grade math teacher. This<br />

year, though, was the year that Mr. Havard received the prestigious SBS Teacher of the Year Award. Soon after he received<br />

the award, I talked with Mr. Havard about his times inside and out of SBS.<br />

EB: What was your reaction when you were told that you were Teacher of the Year?<br />

TH: I was completely shocked when I received the news. Honestly, at first I thought my class was going to get scolded for<br />

being too noisy while there was a principal's conference down the hall in the library. So as I understood what was<br />

happening my feelings quickly transitioned from relief to surprise to joy.<br />

EB: What are some of your hobbies outside of teaching?<br />

TH: One of my main hobbies outside of teaching is playing the drums. I started playing the drums in 3rd grade. My music<br />

teacher at SBS was Kenn Pempel, who really encouraged me and included me in a variety of performances. I always found<br />

music to be a great outlet for creativity, friendships and release of energy.<br />

EB: What is your favorite band and why?<br />

TH: My favorite band is the Stone Temple Pilots. While I like a fairly broad range of music styles, the 90's grunge rock is<br />

probably my favorite. STP has been making cool songs for a long time and their concerts are high energy. The lead singer<br />

has a crazy mind, but a great voice. I never get tired of listening to their music.<br />

EB: What is your favorite part of teaching at SBS?<br />

TH: My favorite part of teaching at SBS is connecting with my students. It's fun getting to know my students, their<br />

personalities and their abilities as the year progresses. I find it very rewarding being able to experience students enjoying<br />

learning and feeling good about their accomplishments. I always found educational endeavors to be challenging but fun -<br />

and I try to make it the same way for my own students.
<br />

EB: What is the strangest thing that has happened to you at SBS, as a student or teacher?<br />

TH: One of my strangest experiences as a teacher happened on my 2nd day of school. I used to have water turtles in my<br />

classroom. On my first day with my students, I introduced them to my turtles, which I kept in a tank with a secure lid. The<br />

next day I came to school, one of the turtles was missing! I couldn't believe it. I told Mr. MacConnell, other teachers, the<br />

custodians and my students - I was freaking out! Mysteriously, the next day I found my turtle crawling around my classroom<br />

- I returned him to the tank with his other friends. I think someone pulled a pretty good prank on me - some day I'll get to the<br />

bottom of that mystery! Anyway, it was a pretty funny start to my career at SBS.<br />

Mr. Havard can be seen often venturing around the school, whether it is for soccer, music, or just teaching in general.<br />

You can find him at any soccer game in the fall, encouraging his team from the sideline. When the variety show comes<br />

around, you can spot him rocking from his drums. Walk down the Junior High wing hallway and find him explaining new<br />

branches of math to his class, or discussing different rock groups with his students. Step into a dance and find Mr. Havard,<br />

co-head of the Student Council, collecting tickets at the door. Go almost anywhere in the school and you will find something<br />

that connects to Mr. Havard, from a stray soccer ball in the gym to a poster for an upcoming dance. Soon, you will be able to<br />

find a plaque in the main lobby that almost every visitor to the school will view congratulating Mr. Havard on yet another<br />

feat—Teacher of the Year.<br />

Behind the Scenes of an<br />

SBS Production<br />

You hear low, quiet talking. The doors slam shut, and it is time to begin. Being a<br />

lead in the play, you are nervous, and it is hard to breath. As the curtains open, a<br />

sudden feeling comes upon you. You see your family, and you feel relieved. They are<br />

here to support you, and are smiling the whole way. In this dress, this costume which<br />

makes you feel ridiculous, you suddenly stop and think. The last play. The end of this<br />

stage, and all the fun times that everyone has had here. Dancing and singing, you are<br />

laughing and having a great time, but it is not over. There is more to be heard. You<br />

talk backstage with the new friends you have made along the way. Funny people,<br />

dramatic people, people who you will miss. It is almost over, but the last song is<br />

coming up. Your solo. After the play, you sign autographs for little ones who have<br />

asked many times before, and you see others crying and sad that it is over. Your<br />

parents hand you flowers, and the flowers make you think. Out of your costume, and<br />

back to reality, you are confused. What do I do now? In a way, you feel lost, and sad.<br />

The beautiful play is over, but there is more to be heard. You are not just an actor, but<br />

you are your own person, and everyone loved it, and they will in the future again.<br />

7 th Grade Trip to New York<br />

For the 7 th grade class trip, the students<br />

took a 2-hour bus ride to Manhattan, New York. On<br />

this trip, they went to see the award winning<br />

Broadway show, The Phantom Of the Opera. They also saw the United Nations, Grand Central<br />

Station, and The Stardust Diner. The first stop was Grand Central Station where the grade had<br />

lunch and enjoyed the scenery. They met up with their tour guide who talked to them about the<br />

original state of the station and how it was transformed into what it is today. From there, they<br />

walked to the United Nations where they were given a tour on the inside. They saw where the<br />

various foreign leaders would meet and discuss the problems of each of their countries. The<br />

group went with their respective teacher escorts and was taken out of the building to the bus,<br />

yet again. From there, the bus was driven to the Broadway theatre, dedicated to the showing of<br />

The Phantom Of The Opera. The group split up and went to their seats,<br />

just in time for the show! Afterwards, the group walked through the<br />

busy streets of Times Square to The Stardust Diner. There, they<br />

received a warm welcome from the owner and were seated at their<br />

tables. The waiters brought them their food while also singing and<br />

dancing for them. They had a great and fun time!


Supporting Our Troops!<br />

At the beginning of the school year, Henry Stolbof, came up<br />

with a great idea to help troops that were stationed<br />

overseas fighting for our country. He knew people<br />

collected supplies to send to the troops around Veteran’s<br />

Day, but wanted to send more supplies throughout the year.<br />

He saw that he had a lot of supplies left over in his house<br />

and was thinking of a way to send it to them to the troops. He was thinking that if his family<br />

wasn’t using it he could be helping the troops out by sending it. He went to the unit out of Red<br />

Bank and they were very excited about his new project. Henry has collected food and supplies<br />

from different homerooms throughout the year and has send these boxes to the Marine unit, 6 th<br />

Motor Transport Battalion, where his actions have been much appreciated!<br />

He told his school about it and was asking if they could start a food drive for it. It is doing<br />

great and many teachers and students told him that they really love this project. He gets lots<br />

of people helping and bringing in lots of supplies to be sent. He feels very good about what he<br />

has done and his sister Katherine will take over this project next year, so the donations will<br />

continue. Everyone can agree it is for a good cause!<br />

The Parent Portal is a brand new feature to the SBS website. It is a website that<br />

parents can access to see their child’s grades in school. Our school has just started<br />

using the Parent Portal at the beginning of this year. Parents can use the Parent Portal<br />

to look at their child’s report card, and 5 th – 8 th graders can access their assignment grades,<br />

and their interim report. There are several pros and cons about the website, some features<br />

are beneficial and others make the website hard to use and navigate around. Some of the<br />

pros of the Parent Portal are that parents can use controls to see each of their individual<br />

child’s grades. For 5 – 8 grades the parents have the ability to sort through different subjects<br />

and marking periods. In addition, parents can see the grade that their child earned on a<br />

certain assignment and the highest possible grade they could earn. Some cons of the Parent<br />

Portal are that a parent cannot access the<br />

assignments that their child had in 4 th<br />

grade and younger. The passwords<br />

for the Parent Portal are randomly<br />

generated and could be hard for<br />

the parent(s) to remember. We<br />

interviewed some students<br />

about the portal and for the most<br />

part the feedback was positive!<br />

Most teachers will not give back the test if<br />

someone was absent until they come back and<br />

take it. The Portal allows us to access our grades<br />

with out knowing the correct answers…so<br />

students can’t tell the person that didn’t take it<br />

yet. So we are happy and the teachers are happy.“<br />

SAIL Fair… Enter The Galaxy Of Imagination<br />

has set SAIL into<br />

space! On the<br />

dates of April 2 and April 3, we have<br />

entered the Galaxy of Imagination! Projects<br />

are being completed in full throttle, and everyone is itching<br />

to see how their projects turned out. All the grades have done a project,<br />

excluding the eighth grade. The eighth grade was assigned to help the other<br />

grades with their projects, and do side projects along with it. We had to do things<br />

such as plan on where the grade’s project(s) will be exhibited, how big, and etc.<br />

Even the production crew joined in, in order to make the SAIL<br />

Fair into the galactic wonder it was.<br />

Starting off, there was Pre-<strong>School</strong>. They were assigned to<br />

craft their own recipe for a friendly and peaceful school. It<br />

was supposed to be based off of the Peace Builders principle,<br />

and they did a spectacular job. Decorated aprons and chef hats<br />

filled their exhibit, and they were even fortunate sing the<br />

Peace Builders song. Applying to the principles of peace<br />

Builders, kindergarteners created a peace train. They even<br />

made a Peace Builders train station to go along with it. They<br />

even created quilts and learned many peace-themed songs. After<br />

them, there is First Grade. They had to demonstrate their<br />

knowledge of the solar system and constellations by building<br />

their own space rockets. They even designed their own unique space suits to go<br />

along with their rockets. Second Grade took a step into the atmosphere. They had<br />

to learn about weather conditions on Earth. They created posters, books, and<br />

weather banes to communicate their understanding of the given<br />

topic. Third Grade was assigned a momentous task. They had to<br />

research information about each of the 50 states in our country.<br />

Then, they displayed their findings in “suitcases” that they crafted<br />

by hand. Even more, they had to build monuments. Fourth Grade<br />

exhibit was astounding. They had to research the history of<br />

<strong>Shrewsbury</strong> and demonstrate that. They had to write reports, create<br />

drawings, and even make their own electrical matching games. The<br />

Fifth Grade had to make currency and/or intergalactic commerce.<br />

They even had to write descriptions of their coins including their values, even for<br />

whatever imaginary country it was for. The Sixth Grade had the topic of<br />

“Futuristic Inventions” and had to create inventions that will make life better,<br />

easier, or less expensive. It sounds like hard work was required, but they managed<br />

to pull it off. The seventh grade had to create original board games based on a<br />

certain subject area or a theme of their choice. With all the<br />

topics they can choose from, there was a<br />

plethora of ways to create the games.<br />

Instructions had to be included when<br />

making the game. This year’s SAIL Fair was<br />

a complete success and had so many<br />

visitors. A job well done!
