ABOUT THE PROGRAM<br />
The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood<br />
Education offers coursework and field experiences<br />
leading to the Master in Education with Teacher<br />
Certification (Class A and Class A Alternative) in<br />
Early Childhood Education (P-3) and Elementary<br />
Education (K-6). The Department also offers<br />
coursework and research opportunities for the<br />
Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Early<br />
Childhood Education and Elementary Education with<br />
Class AA teacher certification.<br />
DEGREE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS<br />
Candidates for the Master’s in Elementary Education<br />
(regardless of Track) must successfully:<br />
1. Complete all undergraduate deficiency courses.<br />
2. Complete the prescribed courses listed in the<br />
approved plan of study.<br />
3. Obtain an overall grade-point average of 3.00<br />
(based on a 4.00 system).<br />
4. Pass a written comprehensive examination that<br />
covers the content of the program, complete an<br />
internship. <br />
All students enrolled in the Alternative Master’s (5<br />

program) must also complete 205 hours of diverse field<br />
5. Pass all parts of the <strong>Alabama</strong> Prospective<br />
Teacher Test (9) passing of the Praxis II in the<br />
appropriate area.<br />
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR GRADUATE<br />
STUDENTS FOR THE INTERNSHIP<br />
(ALTERNATIVE MASTER’S 5 TH YEAR)<br />
<strong>Graduate</strong> students who expect to participate in<br />
internship shall meet all the Teacher Education<br />
program admission criteria described in the <strong>Alabama</strong><br />
Administrative Code and be admitted to a Teacher<br />
Education program after the completion of FED 501<br />
or FED 521, SPE 501 and EDU 529. Only students<br />
who have a minimum of 3.00 grade point average<br />
(GPA) in the teaching field (all work used), in<br />
professional studies (all work used) and overall will<br />
be eligible for internship. <strong>Graduate</strong> students must<br />
obtain and maintain a minimum overall of 3.00 grade<br />
point average (GPA) throughout their program.<br />
An application for internship must be completed and<br />
filed in the Office of Field Experiences at least one<br />
year prior to the internship date. The deadline for the<br />
spring is March 15 of the previous year, and for the<br />
fall semester, September 15 of the previous year.<br />
Before a graduate student can participate in<br />
internship, the following prerequisites must be met:<br />
1. The student must have on file an application to a<br />
Teacher Education program.<br />
2. The student must meet all requirements for<br />
admission to a Teacher Education program.<br />
3. GRE scores must be on file with the Teacher<br />
Service Center<br />
4. The student must meet general studies<br />
requirements.<br />
5. The student must have obtained and maintained a<br />
minimum of 3.00 grade point average in<br />
experiences prior to enrolling in the fall semester of internship.<br />
Fifty hours of field experiences are completed at Level I of the<br />
program. Twenty hours, three full days, are completed while<br />
enrolled in FED 501 Foundations of Education and/or FED 521<br />
Multicultural Education courses. The three days of field<br />
experiences for these courses are completed in Title I, high poverty<br />
schools. Thirty hours, four full days, are completed while enrolled<br />
in SPE 501 Introduction to Individuals With Disabilities. Field<br />
experiences are completed in special education settings, with<br />
students with exceptionalities. One hundred fifty-five hours of<br />
field experiences are completed during Level II of the program<br />
while enrolled in teaching field courses. Students alternate<br />
experiences between urban and rural school settings. Fifty-five of<br />
the 155 hours may be completed in service learning settings.<br />
