BILATERAL BEAT<br />

Visit <strong>of</strong> an all-women business delegation from <strong>India</strong> to Sri Lanka<br />

An all-women delegation from the Associated Chambers <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Industry <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong><br />

(ASSOCHAM) comprising <strong>of</strong> 15 women entrepreneurs from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkatta visited Sri Lanka<br />

from 3-8 May 2012, under the aegis <strong>of</strong> the SAARC Women’s Initiative for Peace and Prosperity (SWIPP).<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> SWIPP is to strengthen economic and<br />

cultural cooperation between <strong>India</strong> and each <strong>of</strong> the SAARC<br />

countries, through a unique all-women platform and<br />

perspective.<br />

The 15-member women delegation was led by Dr.<br />

Harbeen Arora, President, Creative Living Foundation on behalf<br />

<strong>of</strong> ASSOCHAM. According to Dr. Arora, the purpose <strong>of</strong> the<br />

delegation was to “meet as many women entrepreneurs and<br />

leaders from Sri Lanka from diverse fields like trade and<br />

investment, politics, media, arts, public health and well-being,<br />

science and technology, environment, academia and peace<br />

who can be part <strong>of</strong> the SWIPP initiative.”<br />

During the visit, the delegation had a meeting with <strong>High</strong> <strong>Commission</strong>er <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> to Sri Lanka Ashok K.<br />

Kantha. They also had a meeting at the National Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce <strong>of</strong> Sri Lanka in <strong>Colombo</strong> on 4<br />

May, where they met its President Mr. Asoka Hettigoda and interacted with the members <strong>of</strong> the National<br />

Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Women’s Chamber <strong>of</strong> Industry and Commerce. The delegetes met<br />

Ms. Vidyani Hettigoda, Chairperson, Women’s Chamber <strong>of</strong> Industry and Commerce, Sri Lanka and Ms.<br />

Otara Del Gunawardene, Odel. The members <strong>of</strong> the delegation came from a variety <strong>of</strong> backgrounds like<br />

Handloom, Architecture, <strong>High</strong>er Education, Interior Designing, Human Resource Consulting etc.<br />

Dr. Harbeen Arora, leader <strong>of</strong> the delegation, said that the delegation was successful in meeting its<br />

objectives <strong>of</strong> connecting women entrepreneurs in <strong>India</strong> to their counterparts in Sri Lanka.<br />
