Major Developments & Investment

World's largest two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp has inked a technology-sharing deal with US
motorcycle firm Erik Buell Racing (EBR) wherein Hero would buy technology from EBR without sharing
profits or ownership. EBR is already working on some of Hero MotoCorp's products to customise them
according to the Indian markets. New models of bikes and scooters are likely to get launched by 2013
The Stuttgart-based luxury car maker Mercedes Benz intends to invest Rs 350 crore (US$ 67.97 million)
by 2014 in its facility near Pune and launch about five compact premium cars in India by then. The
company sees great growth prospects in India and hence plans to strengthen its dealership network and
Spotlight Continues: Automobile
Tata Motors, the country's largest automobile producer, has announced that it will infuse Rs 800 crore -
Rs 1000 crore (US$ 155.2 - 194 million) over 2012-2015 to build a plant in Dharwar, Karnataka. The
facility that would be exclusively dedicated to manufacture the Tata Ace Zip and Magic Iris, will have an
annual capacity of 90,000 units. It is anticipated that the plant would reach its full capacity by the end of
fiscal 2012-13

Nissan plans to bring its premium car brand Infiniti in the domestic market as it intends to expand its
luxury car basket in India. Infiniti's entry will intensify the competition in Indian luxury car space as there
are so many brands vying for substantial market share. Nissan plans to assemble the car in India instead
of importing it a completely-built unit (CBU)

Escorts' agri-machinery arm won a one-year rate contract from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for
supplying tractors to Central and State-level agencies. The contract would enable the Faridabad-based
firm to supply tractors on pre-approved prices directly without entering any tendering process
Government Initiatives
In order to enforce compliance and the Energy Conservation Act, the Government has recently given
its nod to fuel mileage standards and labelling for new cars. Keeping consumer interest in mind, these norms
would mandate auto makers to put Government certified fuel efficiency labels on each car they sell and
improve efficiency of their products. While the labels will become compulsory soon, the standards will be
introduced by 2015, giving manufacturers time to improve upon their technology.
SIAM is working on a voluntary recall policy that is in favour of auto manufacturers. The soon-to-beunveiled
policy would make producers proactive rather than being reactive for the recall activity. On a similar
note, the Indian Government is in the process of constituting a National Automotive Board (NAB) which would
become a formal set-up to look into the issue of recall of vehicles and hence improve manufacturing
standards. The prospective body, to oversee technical and safety aspects of vehicles, will have
representatives from all the nodal ministries and automotive bodies such as the Automotive Research
Association of India (ARAI).
Road Ahead
Industry body SIAM expects overall automobile sales to grow by 10-12 per cent in 2012-13 on the
back of supportive Government policies, launch of new models and intensifying enthusiasm for cars among
Indian consumers.
Furthermore, Rothschild, a UK-based global financial advisory firm,
forecasts that India would become the third largest auto industry by volumes
by 2015. The growth is anticipated to be driven by increase in investments
by auto makers that would expand the capacity from 4.8 million units in 2010
to 12 million in 2018. New launches, strengthening dealership networks,
strategic alliances and predicted mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are
expected to provide an impetus to the sector in the years to come.
INDIAN ECONOMY
Indian Economy Overview
India is projected to see a faster growth of 7.5 per cent this fiscal, on the back of higher savings and
investment rates, even as most of the Asia-Pacific economies are likely to expand at a slower pace, as per a
United Nations (UN) report. "We expect it to expand by about 7.5 per cent in 2012-13," said Nagesh Kumar,
Chief Economist, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Today, India is among the most attractive destinations globally, for investments and business and
FDI had increased over the last few years. The Indian economy has continuously recorded high growth rates
and become an attractive destination for investments.
Meanwhile, India continued its ascent as a top destination for private clean energy investment,
according to a research report released by The Pew Charitable Trusts. "Clean energy investment, excluding
research and development, has grown by 600 per cent since 2004," according to Phyllis Cuttino, Director,
Pew's Clean Energy Program. India's clean energy sector continued to flourish in 2011, with private
investment increasing 54 per cent to US$ 10.2 billion, placing the country at sixth position among the G-20
nations. This was the second highest growth rate among the G-20 nations.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) plans to establish permanent physical presence in India by
setting up an office in the next twelve months. "Today, India is amongst the most important G-20 economies
and this underscores Forum's commitment to the country as a partner," according to Mr Sushant Palakurthi
Rao, Senior Director, WEF.
The Economic Scenario

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been named as the world's fourth most valuable information
technology (IT) services brand by leading global brand valuation company, Brand Finance. "With a strong
brand strategy and a refined sponsorship portfolio, TCS has been able to improve both brand awareness
and its profile globally," as per David Haigh, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Brand Finance
The Union Ministry of Science and Technology has selected three consortia that will receive a grant of Rs
125 crore (US$ 23.58 million) from the Central Government. The funding will be over five years, under the
Indo-US Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Centre. The Joint Clean Energy is part of the
US-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy, announced by the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan
Singh, and the US President, Mr Barack Obama, in November 2011, which aims to accelerate the
transition to high performing, low emissions, and energy secure economies
Non-resident Indians (NRIs) deposited US$ 11 billion into bank deposits during 2011-12, three times
more than in the previous year, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The
highest accretion was in the non-resident (external) rupee account, at US$ 7.46 billion, against an outflow
of US$ 280 million in 2010-11
The Government of India has approved 14 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) proposals amounting to US$
288.05 million, based on the recommendations of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)
India's foreign exchange (Forex) reserves increased by US$ 1.4 billion in the week ended April 20, 2012,
according to data released by the RBI. The reserves have increased US$ 205 million since the start of
this financial year
FDI inflows worth US$ 341.49 million were recorded in the drugs and pharmaceuticals sector between
April 2009 to February 2012. At present, the Government of India allows 100 per cent FDI for both greenfield
Commerce and Industry
India is the global leader in the IT-business process outsourcing (BPO) industry with half of the world's
back office being located here. Indian outsourcing revenue at US$ 59 billion for 2011, accounts for 51 per
Growth Potential Story

Consumer spending in India is likely to grow nearly four times to touch US$ 3.6 trillion by 2020, driven by
rising incomes and aspirations, widespread media proliferation and better physical reach across the
country, according to a joint report titled, 'The Tiger Roars - How a billion plus people consume and shop'
by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
The research and development (R&D) talent pool is growing at the rate of 9 per cent every year and
expected to reach 250,000 by 2015, as per C S Chandramouli, Senior Director-Globalisation Advisory,
Zinnov. Indian multinational companies (MNC) are moving into tier-II cities, highlighted the Zinnov study.
Fresh talent pool in tier-II cities is estimated to form 35 per cent of the Indian R&D workforce going ahead.
In the tier-II cities, work such as testing, level 3 customer support and bug fixing are being undertaken
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to launch its biggest ever spacecraft, the 5,000 kg
GSAT-11, by 2014. The advanced communication satellite, GSAT-11, will be double the capacity and
size of the present buses, and will be built over the next two years
The Indian IT infrastructure market will reach US$ 2.05 billion in 2012, showing a growth of 10.3 per cent
over the previous year. This market, comprising servers, storage and networking equipment, will touch
the US$ 3 billion mark by 2016, according to technology research firm, Gartner
The Indian internet economy is expected to touch Rs 10.8 trillion (US$ 203.77 billion) by 2016, according
to a report titled 'Connected World Series study' by the Boston Consulting Group. India's internet
economy's growth rate of 23 per cent makes it the second fastest across the G-20 countries and ahead of
many other developing nations. The report 'The $4.2 trillion Opportunity: The Internet Economy in G-20',
further notes that if the internet were a sector, it would be the eighth largest in India
Road Ahead
India continues to urbanise at a strong pace driven by a combination of uptrending consumption,
robust job creation and growing financial penetration, according to Morgan Stanley's proprietary AlphaWise
City Vibrancy Index. The report reveals that Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai are the
top 5 vibrant cities.
The Government had liberalised investments made by registered foreign institutional investors (FIIs)
under the Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) from April 10, 2012. Earlier, these investments required
Government approval.
India will see the largest number of merger and acquisitions (M&A) in the pharmaceutical and
healthcare sector, as per consulting firm, Grant Thornton. A survey conducted across 100 companies has
revealed that a fourth of the respondents were optimistic about acquisitions in the pharmaceutical sector.
