PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As we celebrate our 50 th anniversary let us remember those who were instrumental in the
formation of the Society. On January 18, 1962, Emerson and Grace Thompson were joined
by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Archer, Thor and Pam Thorgrimsson, Archie and Doreen Bell, Dr. Nils
Olson and Roberta Boucher at the inaugural meeting at Stittsville Public School (then on
Main Street). A total of 17 people were in attendance.
Over the past 49 years the Society has grown and flourished due to the dedicated efforts of
our founding members and of our many volunteers. In the Spring of 2012 we will honour
those founding members by planting a Red Oak, with commemorative plaque, at Granite
Ridge Long Term Care facility.
Our speakers in 2011 were informative and entertaining. The topics covered herb and
vegetable cultivation and consumption, sustainable gardening with native plants, and bugs,
both good and not so good.
The February Photography competition draws more entries and talent each year. In 2011,
dozens of stunning photos were submitted. The competition was keen and resulted in
several ties.
The Society functions on the volunteer efforts and contributions of our members. These
volunteers give time and talent to ensure our programs and events are enjoyable,
educational and successful. Following are some of this year’s highlights:
Volunteers cleared litter from our “adopted” portion of the Trans- Canada Trail, including
Village Square Park and the Trail between West Ridge and Sacred Heart School.
Village Square Park was enhanced with plants in the concrete planter boxes, lovingly
planted and cared for by Marlene Lahey.
May’s plant sale brought the public out for quality plants and bargains – this seems to occur
regardless of what the weather throws our way.
The Garden Tour was blessed with great weather. Georgia Derrick convinced twelve
homeowners to open their gardens for the tour, which attracted 136 people.
In September the “community garden” raised beds were constructed behind the Food Bank.
This was a successful partnership involving the City of Ottawa, First Stittsville Scout Troop,
Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, Cavanagh Construction and our Society. We look
forward to spring when the Scouts will be planting and maintaining the beds, under
guidance from our members.
The “50 th Anniversary Stittsville Gateway” project came to completion with the planting of
shrubs, grasses and sedums at the Welcome to Stittsville sign at Hazeldean and Main
Street. With time, it will become an even more welcoming sight.
As the Society continues to grow and evolve over the next 50 years, let us remain
committed to encouraging interest and improvement in our community, through
horticulture.
Established
1962
The Stittsville Horticultural Society was founded in 1962 so this year will mark our 50th
anniversary. Our floral emblem is the Lily of the Valley.
Members come together to share their interest and enthusiasm in gardening. This is a
volunteer organization so everyone is encouraged to share some of their time for the
continuation of the Society and benefit of the community.
Membership provides access to experienced, knowledgeable local gardeners as a valuable
resource. Monthly meetings and newsletters share news of horticultural activities locally
and across the region. Novice and expert gardeners alike benefit from the speakers, tours,
seminars and workshops offering both new and traditional gardening information.
We encourage young gardeners in the community by offering Spring Seed Kits and other
community activities. As the saying goes, “Teach a child to garden and they will grow for
life”.
With the arrival of digital photography even the novice can capture the beauty flourishing
around us so you might consider entering our annual Photography Competition held in
February.
The Annual Spring Plant Sale, Garden Tours and Bus Trips allow us to socialize and to raise
the funds necessary to continue beautifying our neighbourhoods.
We celebrate Earth Day by Spring Cleaning the Trans-Canada Trail and our adopted Village
Square Park. We strive to improve the environment and thereby the community by adding
colour and charm to our streets, parks, and public places.
Members are also encouraged to expand their horticultural horizons by attending functions
at both the District and Provincial level.
Our meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm (except July, August
& December) at the Pretty Street Community Centre, corner of Orville & Pretty St. in
Stittsville. Board meetings are held once a month at the same location and are open to any
members to attend.
Opportunities throughout the year allow us to showcase our garden gems, floral arranging
talents and green thumbs at mini shows held at our monthly meetings. The Peony, Rose
and Iris Show in June is always spectacular. Members are encouraged to share items of
interest at our monthly meetings.
The Annual Spring Plant Sale a popular community event will be held on Saturday, May 26,
2012 at the Bradley’s Insurance parking lot at 1469 Main Street, Stittsville from 9AM – 1
PM. Contribute some plants from your garden then join us for the fun early Sat. morning at
our biggest fundraiser of the year
The Photography Competition results are announced at our February 14, 2012 meeting.
Classes and details for next year, 2013 are listed in this 2012 Yearbook. Categories for
2012 were listed in the 2011 Yearbook. Members of the community can participate by
paying the $15 annual society membership fee.
We are making plans for another Society Bus Trip in late July to another
popular destination.....more details as they become available.
Discounts on your plant purchases are often available at selected local and area Garden
Centers with your Society Membership card. Please verify details at each location
before choosing your plants.
We offer a Program for Juniors/Youth - with Kits containing both flower and vegetable seeds
along with planting & growing information made available early each year to children in our
community. These will be available for a $2.00 registration fee at the Spring Plant Sale
on May 26th, 2012.
Our annual membership fee is $15 for single and $25 for family. Guest fees are $2.00.
Society fees are due January 1st this year and are not pro-rated. Please contact any Board
Member for further information.
In November at the Annual General Meeting and Potluck Dinner we elect a new Board
of Directors and Executive to ensure the continuation of the Society and its activities. The
evening starts with an always delicious potluck dinner and provides an opportunity
to acknowledge and thank those who so generously donate their time and labours for the
benefit of the membership and our community.
HISTORY
STITTSVILLE GOULBOURN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
50 years ago, on January 18, 1962 the inaugural meeting of the Stittsville Horticultural
Society was held at Stittsville Public School on Main Street. Emerson and Grace Thompson
were joined by a total of 15 other gardening enthusiasts that included Mr. & Mrs. Cecil
Archer, Thor & Pam Thorgrimsson, Archie & Doreen Bell, Dr. Nils Olson & Roberta Boucher.
That same year, Stittsville Horticultural Society took 1st prize for a floral display at the
Richmond Fair. So began a long-standing relationship that continues today whereby the
Society makes an annual contribution towards prizes in the floral, fruit and vegetable
categories of the Richmond Fair.
In 1977 the name was changed to Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society to reflect a
larger Goulbourn township due to amalgamation, whereby residents of Richmond, Munster
Hamlet and Ashton also became potential members.
The first Photographic Competition was held in 1983 with over 100 entries including both
colour slides and prints in eight classes. Today all entries are judged on an equal basis.
The first Lifetime Memberships were awarded in 1992 to the four remaining charter
members: Pam Thorgrimsson, Nils Olson, Doreen Bell and Grace Thompson. Lifetime
members today include Doreen Bell, Lee Boltwood, Edna Emmott, Sandy Mutch, Peter Jago
and John and Ann Soar. Lifetime memberships may be awarded by a Society to long time
members for continuous contributions to their Society of 15 years or more. Membership
fees are no longer required, however the Society still pays their dues to the OHA.
In 2002 Janet Stavinga, Goulbourn Ward Councillor with the City of Ottawa, presented the
Society with a plaque in celebration of the Society’s 40 th anniversary. In celebration of our
50th Anniversary in 2012, early this spring our Society will plant a Red Oak with a plaque to
honour our founding members at the Granite Ridge Long Term Care Facility on Abbott St. in
Stittsville.
The OHA was created in 1906 by a provincial organization known today as the
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). The OHA receives
authority, regulations and policy direction from OMAFRA as well as some funding.
The OHA is led by a dedicated group of volunteers - an Executive Board and 19 District
Directors - who have as their mission to provide leadership and assistance in the promotion
of horticultural education and environmental stewardship. For specific activities, please refer
to their website.
The OHA functions as a ‘parent’ organization to 19 geographic Districts within Ontario with
279 Societies in 2011. Each District has its own Director who oversees and supports the
Societies within their District, acting as a source of information and facilitating liaison with
the OHA and other Societies. Stittsville-Goulbourn Horticultural Society is within District 2.
The Ontario Horticultural Association pursues its mission by:

Administering a grant program for Horticultural Societies for tree planting and special
projects that support community beautification.
Developing programs in the areas of conservation and the environment, such as the
‘Pollinator Patch’ which will be promoted at the Society level this year.
Providing direction and support to the Districts and Horticultural Societies through
the provision of group liability insurance plans, manuals and operating procedures,
and speaker lists, etc.
Maintaining a framework for volunteer recognition programs, certificates and special
awards – eg. Long Service, Community Improvement and Youth Leader awards.
Collecting volunteer hours’ statistics which are used when assessing grant
applications and responding to government issues: volunteer hours indicate the
important contribution that societies give to their communities.
Holding an annual convention: in 2012, it will be held in Niagara-on-the-Lake from
Aug 17 to 19 and the theme will be "Gardening Then and Now, 1812 - 2012".
Offering training courses for prospective judges for horticultural and agricultural
society shows.
Hosting flower shows and competitions as well as supporting fairs and garden shows
Publishing items of a horticultural or environmental nature such as the quarterly
Trillium newsletter, the Rain Barrel Booklet and the Ontario Judging Standards.
The OHA is also responsible for compiling and reviewing each Society’s Annual Report and
for monitoring the Society’s performance and compliance to rules and regulations
