<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Training</strong><br />

Funding for <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Training</strong> is provided through the Canada-British Columbia Labour<br />

Market Agreement and is intended to assist individuals obtain the skills necessary for<br />

employment.<br />

Preface:<br />

This booklet is intended as a program content overview for Employment Skills Access Program,<br />

specifically <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Training</strong>.<br />

1. Eligibility Requirements:<br />

Applicants must meet all Employment Skills Access Program eligibility criteria including:<br />

Unemployed, non-EI clients; or<br />

Employed, low-skilled individuals<br />

legally entitled to work in Canada<br />

living in BC<br />

not be a student enrolled in high school or post-secondary education<br />

not currently participating in another Labour Market Agreement funded program<br />

2. Entrance Requirements for Enrolment:<br />

Must meet the eligibility screening criteria<br />

Must have Level 1 computer aptitude – Word, Excel. Applicants will be tested on the first day<br />

of training to determine Level 1 competency.<br />

The training is offered at four <strong>Selkirk</strong> <strong>College</strong> Campuses as follows:<br />

The training schedule will vary for each campus. In order for students to fully benefit from the<br />

training regular attendance is required, and if a student is absent from class, it is the student’s<br />

responsibility to talk with the instructor to obtain the course work that was missed and make<br />

arrangements to catch up. Students can expect homework, and if a student requires extra help with<br />

some of the courses, it is the student’s responsibility to follow this up with the instructor.<br />

4. <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Training</strong> – Program Summary<br />

Successful completion of the <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Program results in a Certificate of<br />

Completion as well as certification for World Host, Occupational First Aid Level 1 and WHMIS. The<br />

program is directed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to enter or re-enter the<br />

workforce.<br />

5. Course Description<br />

a. Employment Success Foundation (30 hrs)<br />

This introductory week sets the foundation for successful job search efforts at the training<br />

program conclusion. This course will: examine the impact of change and transition, providing<br />

tangible tools/processes to navigate through the shift making the most of opportunities; present<br />

greater understanding of self and others for the purpose of growth and clarity around career<br />

direction; categorize student’s competencies, reflecting on their accomplishments and identify<br />

in their cover letter and resume what they bring to a position; discuss and prepare students for<br />

the interview process.<br />

b. Microsoft Office Review and Assessment (6 hrs)<br />

Review MS Office programs for ability and identification of areas of strength and weakness.<br />

Develop working plan with student to build on current skills and fill in knowledge gaps.<br />

c. Microsoft Office Word – Level 2 (30 hrs)<br />

Develop the skills to use the advanced features of Word, including formatting with styles and<br />

themes, page headers and footers, and merging documents/databases. MS Office Word Level 1<br />

familiarity required.<br />

d. Microsoft Office Excel - – Level 2 (30 hrs)<br />

Develop the skills to use the autofill handle, create ranges of cells and sort lists, create a web<br />

page from a worksheet, change cell size and alignment, and use function analysis. Learn to<br />

work with advanced formatting and formulas, page headers and footers, repeating columns<br />

and rows, charts and themes. MS Office Excel Level 1 familiarity required.<br />

e. Microsoft Office Powerpoint – Level 1 (12 hrs)<br />

Develop the skills to work with text, illustrations, smart art, shapes and tables. Learn to<br />

incorporate slide master and add animations. MS Office familiarity required.<br />

f. Microsoft Office Access – Level 1 (12 hrs)<br />

Develop the skills to understand and work with a database program. Learn the basics of<br />

databases, tables, and forms. Explore the design and management of a database using prebuilt<br />

templates, application parts and Office themes.MS Office familiarity required.<br />

g. Occupational First Aid – Level 1 (8 hrs)<br />

Eight-hour WCB course, includes CPR and helps you deal with major emergencies until medical<br />

aid arrives. Participants must have the physical ability to perform first aid skills as required.<br />

Three-year WCB certificate upon successful completion.<br />

h. Worldhost (7 hrs)<br />

A one-day course teaching front-line employees the skills and techniques needed for worldclass<br />

service professionalism. Objectives in the Fundamentals workshop include: Understand<br />

the importance of excellent customer service; learn how to communicate more effectively and<br />

efficiently with customers; learn how to demonstrate attentiveness to customer needs;<br />

Understand the social and economic contribution of a healthy tourism industry.<br />

i. WHIMS (4 hrs))<br />

This course informs you of your right to know what hazardous products you are dealing with,<br />

what the hazards are, how to read labels, how to make in-house labels and where to find<br />

information on treatment if an accident were to occur.<br />

7. <strong>College</strong> Supports<br />

a. Counselling Services<br />

The counsellors at <strong>Selkirk</strong> <strong>College</strong> are professionals trained to provide a variety of counselling<br />

services. Appointments and short drop-in sessions are available at all campuses. All services are<br />

free and confidential.<br />

Students may opt to see a counsellor for a variety of concerns regarding career and educational<br />

planning, and personal issues. The counsellor's role is to assist students to gather information,<br />

make plans and decisions, put plans and decisions into action, generate options, cope with crisis,<br />

and understand themselves and others. Short-term personal counselling is available for students<br />

at all main campuses. When appropriate, referrals are made to community agencies and<br />

services. Students in crisis or emergency situations are encouraged to contact counselling<br />

services for assistance.<br />

b. How to See a Counsellor<br />

Counsellors are located in the Student Services/Administration areas on all main campuses, and<br />

are normally available phone or email the campus where you would like to see a counsellor to<br />

make an appointment.<br />

Counsellors also make regular visits to the <strong>Selkirk</strong> <strong>College</strong> Centres. Phone your nearest Centre<br />

for more information.<br />

c. Learning Success Centre – For those students needing extra support<br />

The term 'study skills' refers to a huge array of personality traits, attitudes, thinking processes,<br />

and behaviours --all of which are related to how a person approaches a learning task. The<br />

Learning Success Centre staff provides handouts, workshops, and one-on-one help in the many<br />

areas related to academic performance. One-on-one tutoring and workshops focus on effective<br />

learning and study skills and include topics such as time management, note-taking, academic<br />

reading, exam preparation etc.<br />

d. Disability Services Contacts<br />

It is recommended that prospective students contact a Coordinator well before their program<br />

start-date to begin planning appropriate accommodations. Disability Service Coordinators offer<br />

support on all campuses. There is no charge for any of the services provided by Disability<br />
