<strong>Back</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>popular</strong> <strong>demand</strong>: <strong>CoHo</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>reopen</strong><br />

BY ARIELLE LASKY<br />

Some th<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>to</strong>o good <strong>to</strong> go away. After a nearly yearlong absence, the <strong>popular</strong> student hangout at<br />

<strong>Tresidder</strong> Union called the <strong>CoHo</strong>—a typical Stanford truncation for "C<strong>of</strong>fee House"—will <strong>reopen</strong> <strong>to</strong> the<br />

campus community <strong>in</strong> mid-June.<br />

"Students let us know that they were really disappo<strong>in</strong>ted when <strong>CoHo</strong> closed. They missed the tradition <strong>of</strong><br />

socializ<strong>in</strong>g, d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and enjoy<strong>in</strong>g student programm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>CoHo</strong>," Vice Provost for Student Affairs Greg<br />

Boardman said <strong>in</strong> a statement on May 1. "It seems the time is right <strong>to</strong> recreate the c<strong>of</strong>fee house."<br />

The <strong>CoHo</strong>'s comeback will be collaborative. Head<strong>in</strong>g up the <strong>reopen</strong><strong>in</strong>g, Ray Kle<strong>in</strong>, owner and manager <strong>of</strong><br />

the near<strong>by</strong> Treehouse eatery, will run the café and determ<strong>in</strong>e its menu. Stanford Student Enterprises<br />

(SSE), the bus<strong>in</strong>ess branch <strong>of</strong> the Associated Students <strong>of</strong> Stanford University, will collaborate <strong>with</strong> Kle<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>to</strong> plan a wide variety <strong>of</strong> events for the space, such as movies, talks and live music. Kle<strong>in</strong> said he expects<br />

there <strong>to</strong> be bands perform<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>CoHo</strong> several times each week.<br />

SSE wanted <strong>to</strong> get <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>with</strong> the café's operations <strong>to</strong> "ensure that the <strong>CoHo</strong> would have a dist<strong>in</strong>ctly<br />

student feel," said Matt McLaughl<strong>in</strong>, the group's chief operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>ficer. He and Chief Executive Officer<br />

Matt McDonald talked <strong>to</strong> Boardman about how SSE could contribute <strong>to</strong> the project. They then met Kle<strong>in</strong><br />

and worked out the details.<br />

The new <strong>CoHo</strong> will reta<strong>in</strong> some <strong>of</strong> its old charm—its orig<strong>in</strong>al tables, leather chairs and performance<br />

stage—while also <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g some fresh additions, such as a movie screen projec<strong>to</strong>r, plasma<br />

television and new counter<strong>to</strong>ps. Though the food selection will change, favorite foods, such as the<br />

<strong>CoHo</strong>'s famous crepes, will return.<br />

SSE also is develop<strong>in</strong>g a "mobile food cart" <strong>with</strong> the <strong>CoHo</strong> that will travel <strong>to</strong> dorms and houses that lack<br />

weekend food service. "No more wander<strong>in</strong>g around campus look<strong>in</strong>g for food on a Saturday or Sunday<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g," McLaughl<strong>in</strong> said.<br />

The <strong>CoHo</strong>'s new hours have not yet been set, but Boardman's <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong>dicated that the space will "open<br />

early <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g seven days a week and close late <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>g." The café should be up and<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> time for the Stanford Jazz Workshop this summer.<br />
