iii. Gowns<br />

1. Gowns are not required <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> routine care of patients with ILI.<br />

2. Long sleeved gowns should only be used to protect uncovered skin and<br />

prevent soiling of clothing during procedures and patient care activities<br />

likely to generate splashes or sprays of blood, body fluids, secretions or<br />

excretions 9,45 .<br />

3. HCWs should ensure any open skin areas/lesions on <strong>for</strong>earms or exposed<br />

skin is covered with a dry dressing at all times. Intact skin that has been<br />

contaminated with blood, body fluids, secretion or excretions should be<br />

washed as soon as possible, thoroughly, but gently, with soap and warm<br />

running water.<br />

Patient Triage<br />

Whenever feasible, personnel responsible <strong>for</strong> answering emergency calls related to<br />

influenza-like-illness (ILI) should triage patients according to an ILI Assessment Tool<br />

(see Appendix IV).<br />

Environmental Control (Housekeeping, Laundry, Waste)<br />

i. Emergency Responders should adhere to <strong>the</strong> recommendations <strong>for</strong><br />

housekeeping, laundry and waste management, as outlined in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />

Canada Infection Control Guidelines Handwashing, Cleaning Disinfection and<br />

Sterilization in <strong>Health</strong> Care 3 and Routine Practices and Additional Precautions<br />

<strong>for</strong> Preventing <strong>the</strong> Transmission of Infection in <strong>Health</strong> Care 5 .<br />

ii. Equipment and surfaces contaminated with secretions from patients suspected<br />

or confirmed to have influenza should be cleaned be<strong>for</strong>e use with ano<strong>the</strong>r patient.<br />

iii. Special handling of linen or waste contaminated with secretions from patients<br />

suspected of having or confirmed to have influenza is not required.<br />
