June 2009
Greetings to everyone in Northumbria Group
Northumbria Update.
Thinford Inn South of Durham for the first Wednesday of May and six TRs turned out. Third Wednesday
meeting at The Robin Hood and nine TRs. On neither of these occasions did Dave Wright, winner of the TR
attendance trophy last year, have his car. Perhaps like Jenson Button we've all got that feeling at the start of
the season that we're in with a chance this year.
Peter Herzberg, near Morpeth has completed the rebuild of a 3A which he
should be able to enjoy in the sunny summer that has been predicted by the
weathermen. Peter must already have realised that each of these cars has its
own personality as his news of the completion was headed “She Lives”. He
has been liaising on the last few details in recent months with our technical
adviser Bryan Archer, who has a similar 3A.
Another recent contact has been Mark Younger, also resident up in the
Morpeth area, who has taken over the family TR. Mark,s TR 2 has been in
his family for forty years and was rebuilt by his father approximately twelve
years ago but hasn't seen much running. Mark is keen to get it serviced and
sorted now that its in his hands and that's another new one to look out for .
News of these sidescreens, along with the others already known to be in the
Morpeth area makes a significant group in that locality. There must be TR
sidescreen fertile ground round Morpeth that makes them multiply.
One of them that will not be around up there over this weekend, is the red 3A
of David Rawlinson. He has taken a Continental trip to Loan in France. A
short drive from Calais, the town hosts a historic car festival and scenic tour
over the weekend, when the roads are closed to all except the participating
vehicles which number several hundred. We await David's comments on this
one which sounds like a good prospect for a Northumbria Group trip in
future years.
This winter has seen many of our TRs in the 'sick bay', but they are gradually being discharged.
Jim Duff's six is back on the road with a rebuilt diff. and drive train followed by a shiny mimosa respray.
Harry Roe's upset from the MoT man has been sorted with some new trailing arm brackets and brake service
of his six and he is now back on the road.
One notable,'not ready for discharge yet' is Paul Anderson's 4A. After receiving a rebuilt gearbox its been on
and off again three times in an effort to get rid of a 'clattering clutch'. All clutch parts being the ones that
worked perfectly well before the box rebuild have been inspected thoroughly and given a clean bill of
health, making a complete mystery of why it has turned nasty on return from the rebuild. A new thrust
bearing and carrier are now on order in the latest attempt to cure it.

sealed pack of seat belts to ensure the belts were fitted correctly. A modest amount of advice on wearing
TR Sportsmen
Mid March saw Nigel Cardale in a Durham Automobile Club event, The Weardale Navigation Rally.
Partnered by peter Littlefield they managed 1 st . Place in the newcomers class after a 94 mile route around
County Durham finishing at Barnard Castle.
Nigel was rallying again the first weekend in May where he showed how much he cared for his TR 6 by
leaving it at home and giving his Ford Anglia a thrashing instead in the Berwick Classic Rally. Dave Wright
and John Cook were marshalling for this one as well but the friendly faces couldn't get Nigel onto the leader
board although he had a good finish in his class.
