<strong>Teaching</strong> <strong>English</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Speakers</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Other</strong> <strong>Languages</strong><br />

<strong>Endorsement</strong><br />

The TESOL endorsement must be attached <strong>to</strong><br />

a teacher certificate or license <strong>to</strong> teach<br />

<strong>English</strong> as a second language in an<br />

Ohio public/chartered school.<br />

Requirements<br />

1. You must have studied a foreign language at<br />

some time during your academic career.<br />

2. If you are a non-native speaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>English</strong>,<br />

you must have a valid TOEFL score <strong>of</strong> 550 or<br />

higher.<br />

3. At the end <strong>of</strong> the program, you must take the<br />

PRAXIS II test for TESOL.<br />

4. You must complete the following coursework:<br />

3300:371 Introduction <strong>to</strong> Linguistics<br />

(3 credit hours) Scientific introduction <strong>to</strong> the study<br />

<strong>of</strong> written and spoken linguistic behavior in<br />

<strong>English</strong>, His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>English</strong>, and acquisition <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>English</strong> also introduced.<br />

AND<br />

3300:473/573 Seminar in <strong>Teaching</strong> ESL:<br />

Theory and Method<br />

(3 credit hours) Theoretical issues in linguistic<br />

description and language acquisition as relevant <strong>to</strong><br />

learning <strong>of</strong> a second language. Exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

principles for the teaching <strong>of</strong> <strong>English</strong> as a second<br />

language based on research in linguistics,<br />

psycholinguistics, and second language pedagogy.<br />

AND<br />

3300:489/589 Seminar in <strong>English</strong>:<br />

Sociolinguistics<br />

(3 credit hours) The course <strong>of</strong>fers an introduction<br />

<strong>to</strong> language in its social context, focusing on the<br />

variability <strong>of</strong> language both within the individual<br />

and between social groups and relating this<br />

variability <strong>to</strong> social fac<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

3300:489/589 Seminar in <strong>English</strong>:<br />

Grammatical Structures <strong>of</strong> Modern <strong>English</strong><br />

(3 credit hours) This course thoroughly surveys<br />

the entire range <strong>of</strong> sentence types in <strong>English</strong> and<br />

the component elements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>English</strong> sentence.<br />

The sentence will be viewed on its own but also as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> larger rhe<strong>to</strong>rical units.<br />

5500:487/5500:543 Techniques for <strong>Teaching</strong><br />

<strong>English</strong> as a Second Language<br />

(4 credit hours) This course surveys methods and<br />

materials for teaching listening, speaking, reading,<br />

and writing <strong>to</strong> limited <strong>English</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>icient students<br />

grades K-12. It examines fac<strong>to</strong>rs that impact<br />

language learning, such as learning styles,<br />

motivation, and sociocultural fac<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

AND<br />

5500:485/5500:541 <strong>Teaching</strong> Language<br />

Literacy <strong>to</strong> Second Language Learners<br />

(4 credit hours) Course applies methods for<br />

teaching reading and writing <strong>to</strong> <strong>English</strong> language<br />

learners K-12, assessment <strong>of</strong> literacy skills, and<br />

selection, development, and evaluation <strong>of</strong><br />

materials.<br />

AND<br />

Field Experience in <strong>Teaching</strong> <strong>English</strong> as a<br />

Second Language<br />

(2 credit hours) This is a supervised teaching<br />

experience in an ESL classroom.<br />
