The behaviour of ductile cast
iron pipes is a compromise
between that of flexible and
rigid materials. Consequently,
their mechanical properties
combine the advantages of
both types.

Cast iron is a ductile, and therefore elastic
material, which offers an elongation at rupture
> 10 %.
Although the system is never stressed to this
value, it represents a significant safety margin.
The buried pipeline may be subjected, over time
and in unstable ground for example, to
differential soil compaction or to settlements due
to water circulation which destabilises the trench
bottom.
Due to the strength and elasticity of ductile
cast iron, the pipeline systems can absorb the
inevitable stresses or changes occurring in the
immediate surroundings without breakage or
joint separation.
Buried pipes are also stressed mechanically by
the loads due to the backfill (earth or permanent
loads), in addition to intermittent loads
(circulation loads or traffic loads).
It is therefore important to select a pipeline with
an adequate safety coefficient, to avoid problems
caused by breaks, cracks, flexion or ovalisation
leading to spillage into a water channel.
The ideal complement for these pipelines are
the elastomer gaskets which give the system a
degree of flexibility, representing a safety factor
when crossing heterogeneous or unstable
ground.
When subsidence is extended and uniform, the
gasket allows the pipeline to behave as a flexible
chain in order to take up the mechanical forces.
This feature also eliminates the need to install
connecting rods near manholes.
