HUDSON FALLS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT<br />

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING PROCESS<br />

OVERVIEW<br />

I. Professional Development Planning Requirements:<br />

• As per commissioner’s regulations, each <strong>professional</strong> <strong>development</strong> plan must include the<br />

following: A needs assessment; a statement of goals; objectives; strategies, activities, and<br />

evaluation standards that the <strong>district</strong> will adopt and utilize as part of its <strong>professional</strong><br />

<strong>development</strong> plan.<br />

• The Board of Education must convene the <strong>professional</strong> <strong>development</strong> team on or before<br />

October 1 st each year. Thereafter, the team must have at least 180 days to develop its<br />

recommended <strong>professional</strong> <strong>development</strong> plan.<br />

• The team must submit its recommended <strong>professional</strong> <strong>development</strong> plan to the Board of<br />

Education on or before June 1 st and the Board must act on the plan by June 30 th .<br />

• Commissioner’s regulations require that by September 1 st each year, every <strong>school</strong> <strong>district</strong><br />

must adopt a <strong>professional</strong> <strong>development</strong> plan designed to improve the quality of teaching by<br />

helping teachers stay current and meet the learning needs of their students.<br />

• A majority of the team must be teachers. The team must include the Superintendent or his<br />

designee, <strong>school</strong> administrators (designated by the administrative unit), teachers (designated<br />

by the teaching unit), at least one parent, and one or more curriculum specialist.<br />

• The Board of Education may adopt an annual plan or a multi-year plan. In either case, the<br />

plan must be evaluated annually to determine its effectiveness and to make<br />

recommendations for revisions to the Board for approval.<br />

II. Recommended Planning Schedule & Process:<br />

1. A multi-year is recommended with annual evaluation & monitoring. Potential topics<br />

recommended are the following: Addressing Poverty Needs, Differentiated Instruction,<br />

Data Analysis, and Healthy Schools.<br />

2. September - Team Members finalized and sent to the Board of Education. Planning process<br />

discussed at the building level, BL/PT.<br />

3. October & November – District SDM Team meeting topic. The focus of the discussion will<br />

be to share initial ideas, gather feedback and discuss themes & major initiatives. Additional<br />

topics for consideration include the following: 175 hrs of <strong>professional</strong> <strong>development</strong><br />

required for teachers, certification requirements, technology integration, special education<br />

inclusion, and teaching assistants training to maintain their highly qualified status.


4. December & January - Organize ideas into the multi-year plan cycle (3-4 years<br />

recommended). Included in this process will be the following: <strong>district</strong> goals, building goals,<br />

a process to gather and organize input, clarification of topics, and monitoring the <strong>district</strong> &<br />

building levels for feedback and improvements.<br />

5. February & March – Draft plan and gather input through committee reviews at each level.<br />

Organize input and topics, plan cycle to include monitoring, evaluation and adjustments as<br />

needed. Finalize draft of plan.<br />

6. April – Send draft plan of the PDP to the Board of Education. Review and make<br />

adjustments as necessary with support, feedback and presentation from members.<br />

7. May – 1 st reading of the multi-year Professional Development Plan.<br />

8. June – 2 nd reading and adoption of the Professional Development Plan.
