Drawing well is a skill anyone can learn. Guided<br />

use exercises to access and engage the right side<br />

The Still-Life—<br />
Oil Painting Introduction<br />

A <strong>for</strong>giving, intriguing genre, the still-life provides<br />
time <strong>for</strong> observation of <strong>for</strong>m, color, and light<br />
while you learn the medium of oils. During this<br />
beginning class, students will be guided through<br />
the process from beginning to end to paint two<br />
different, basic still-lifes. Begin each painting<br />
with a preliminary sketch in burnt umber on a<br />
9” x 12” cotton canvas. Then, develop the<br />
sketches into detailed monochromatic underpaintings,<br />
emphasizing the existing lights and<br />
darks. Complete one still-life in a limited palette<br />
of ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and titanium<br />
white and the other in a neutral palette of ivory,<br />
black, yellow ochre, burnt umber, burnt sienna,<br />

advice from our practicing professional artist and<br />
teacher, learn to tackle more complex still-life<br />
arrangements. Focus on the elements of <strong>for</strong>m,<br />
color, and light while broadening the number of<br />
oil paint colors to a full palette of 14 or so. The<br />
canvases will increase in size to 11” x 14” and<br />
14” x 18” to encourage skill development,<br />
experimentation, and confidence with your work.<br />

to several different turns with instruction and<br />

senior adults, providing resistance with support.<br />

Learn the basics of sailing, a lifelong sport which<br />

basic theory of how a sailboat works and how you<br />
safely and skillfully operate it. Then put your skills<br />
into practice at Western Carolina Sail Club on Lake<br />
Hartwell. This program utilizes both classroom and<br />
on-the-water instruction by a US Sailing Certified<br />
Small Boat Instructor. Participants must provide<br />

you. Develop proficiency with tacking, jibing, knots,<br />
and navigation. Improve and transfer your skill to<br />
larger boats. This course consists of both classroom<br />
and on-the-water instruction, demonstration, and<br />
practice at Western Carolina Sailing Club. The<br />
instructor, Ron Moede, is a Coast Guard licensed<br />

about the hardships, logistics,<br />
strategy, and geography associated<br />
with momentous military<br />
expeditions such as the Battle on<br />
Snow Shoes (1758), the Grant<br />
Expedition against the Cherokee<br />
(1761), the Arnold Expedition against Quebec (1775) and<br />
the Ruther<strong>for</strong>d Expedition against the Cherokee (1776).<br />
Hear of the people associated with these expeditions—<br />
Robert Rogers and Rogers’ Rangers, Benedict Arnold,<br />

Join Judy Verhoeven, whose artwork<br />

poster, as you paint, draw, tear, cut,<br />
recycle, and compile images into dynamic<br />

of paper—from photocopies and fine<br />
papers to autobiographical items such<br />
as diplomas, certificates, recipes, travel<br />
memorabilia, show programs, receipts,<br />

transfers to develop unique textures,<br />
and they will create acrylic skins with<br />
