Cobargo Skate Park takes shape
In the true spirit of community participation, Cobargo mums, dads, kids and all came out in force to work on the new Skate Park. The
kids just can’t wait until it is finished to try out their new tricks! Well done everyone.
Mary Williams
President, Cobargo C.W.A.
Cobarbo Country Women’s
Association has been raising awareness
of their work over the past year, and it
has paid off - our numbers continue to
grow!
One of our members recently
attended the State Conference held in
Nowra and the following is a direct quote
from the front page of the South Coast
Register on Wednesday 18th May:
“The NSW CWA is in town and its
members mean business, serious
business.
The issues on their agenda read
like an instruction manual on how to build
a better world and rightly so - it’s what
Collective Wisdom Abounds
they’re doing.
The women have been debating
issues as varied as the effectiveness of
how motorists are policed on our roads,
carbon tax, coal seam mining, Asian
bees, assisted suicide and just about
every subject in between.
They collectively hold an
unfathomable wealth of wisdom,
research and understanding and they
have the patience, the time and the will
to take their recommendations to the
highest office.
As they debate the issues there
is an inspirational electricity in the
auditorium.
They are concise and courteous
but don’t hold back if they have to take
issue with a subject.
After three days they will come
away with a list of issues that, when
carried, become their policy which then
gives them the opportunity to take those
issues to the relevant politicians.”
If any women in Cobargo and
district that would like to be part of this
great organisation that is a great deal
more than tea and scones, join us for a
cuppa and a chat on Tuesday 14th June or
any second Tuesday of the month at the
CWA cottage on the Bermagui Road.
You will find a warm welcome.
Together we can make a difference to the
world.
NATURAL FORESTS – Australia’s wilderness coast
Natural Forests – Australia’s
art photographers. It will be held in
The show is based on the beauty
of our south east forests, and is the result
of photographs captured by Rob Blakers,
Judith Deland, Richard Green, Gordon
Undy, Heide Smith, John Reid and Wes
Stacey while participating in a weekend
photography camp hosted by David and
Libby Bright of Ngairin, Tanja.
Supporting the exhibition is a
selection of the best local photographs
of forests and wildlife and a history
display by Bermagui Historical Society.
Natural Forests – Australia’s
wilderness coast will be opened by Andrew
Sayers, Director of the National Museum
Centre Thursday 9 June at 6pm.
The show runs over the long
weekend, June 11 th , 12 th and 13 th , and is
“Boogie Woogie” in Bermagui and
why we should Buy Local
Maralyn Callaghan
Friendly new faces at Bermagui Library
Donna Lawrence and Ursula Kelly
Around 30 quality entries were
submitted for the Bermie Buy Local
Campaign Logo and Slogan competition.
The judges will have a very difficult time
choosing a winner. After choosing the
winning logo/slogan the Bermagui
Chamber of Commerce will produce
reusable shopping bags and begin an
advertising campaign. The project is
supported by NSW Industry and
Business.
In an effort to keep our dollars
circulating in Bermagui, buying local
is essential for any small towns’
survival. Sure big conglomerates with
massive purchasing power can often
sell more cheaply, but with the recent
excessive hike in fuel, most analyst
attribute amongst other things to the
greed of large supermarket chains.
Our local businesses employ our
teenagers for school holidays and
If you have been into Bermagui
Library recently, you will have been met
by the friendly faces of two new staff
members. Donna Lawrence and Ursula
Kelly have recently joined the Bega
Library Services team to look after
Bermagui Library.
Donna has moved to the south
coast with her partner and was recently
working at Bankstown Library Services.
Donna has commented on the
friendliness of the Bermagui
community.
Ursula worked at the
Eurobodalla Library Services and is
delighted to join Donna at Bermagui.
weekend work, giving them work
experience and the foundation for an
autonomous life. Buying local is not just
about our carbon footprint and
environmental issues, it is vital for our
future economic success. Most of us
chose to live here, let’s honour that
decision and buy local. More
information is available from Lisa Miller
Bradley 0438 710 064.
Bermagui Fisherman’s Wharf complex
They would both like to thank the
community for the wonderful warm
welcome they have received in the
library.
On another note, the trial of
Saturday morning openings at Bermagui
Library has finished and its future is being
reviewed by Council.
We are keen to receive feedback
from the community as to the value (or
otherwise) of Saturday morning opening
at Bermagui and request you send an
email outlining your views to Penny
Probus 20 th Anniversary
celebration success
Bill Johnston
The Probus Club of Bermagui
recently celebrated its 20 th Anniversary
with a week long program of events and
activities, starting with a well-attended
Sausage Sizzle in the outside bar of the
Bermagui Country Club. A wine tasting at
Belgrave Park Winery was lots of fun, with
a fine selection of wines and cheeses
supplied by South Coast Cheese, Tilba,
and later in the week a BBQ and at
Corunna Lake.
Further activities included a
musical afternoon by former member Ken
Horne, with special catering by Carole
Broadhead.
The culmination of the week long
celebration saw a morning golf game with
prizes donated by local businesses
followed by a luncheon attended by over
50 members in the BCC Auditorium.
It was quite a hectic week but
thoroughly enjoyed by those who
participated.
Editorial
Keep those cards and letters flowing in, Dear Readers, we are approaching
our Ninth Birthday at the end of the winter so it would be rewarding if we could have
more communication with you over the colder months as they lend themselves to
more sedentary activities.
The local committees are finalizing their exhibitions for the long weekend
and of course there is the Jazz at Merimbula so you will have many outings to look
forward to.
Even though there have been some unseasonably cold mornings, the winter
arrival has been like a continuation of the rather cold summer which we have had.
Warm days, high seas, happy surfers
“I’ve walked a mile in their shoes ...”
Disability access in our community.
Rosemary Millard
One day you get up and walk out
the door and everything changes,
especially when you break your leg in
your own garden.
Have you ever thought how hard
it is to live some sort of a normal life with
a disability Even our local area/s are
not very friendly to those on crutches or
in wheel chairs. Bermagui for example
has the streetscape from hell, even when
I am in full command of my faculties,
unloading the groceries is a feat. Will
the trolley stay in place whilst I unload
the shopping onto the pavement, how
many dogs have wee’d where I am
putting the bags, and will there be a
parking place for my car close to where
the goods are piled up. This does not
even mention the steps!! The steps up to
the shops, the steps into the shops or
alternatively risking being wiped off the
road by the cars vying for a spot near
the Post Office or coffee shops as they
whirl into Wallaga Street.
Thumbs Up
The other main problem is
dressing, showering and general care of
yourself, your clothes, your hair and the
one shoe which is actually useful. Don’t
blame anyone who has a disability for
looking slightly scruffy as everything
takes so long and you get fed up with the
whole procedure half way through.
If you are lucky enough to have a
partner, you are on Cloud 9, even if the
partner isn’t having to pick up and run
around after you 24/7. I cannot even
imagine surviving the whole procedure
without a partner but one does and one
would adapt. This is a warning to us all
not to take the good things in life for
granted and to care for those who have a
problem.
CORRECTION
In the May issue of the
Triangle we mistakenly called the
guest speaker at the ANZAC Day
Service in Cobargo Rodney Stanton
instead of Ronald (Ron). We
apopogise for the error.
Editor, The Triangle
To the more mature of us who are attaining their doctorates.
We look forward to endless pontification!
To BVSC for consulting with the community by holding a series of
community meetings
A heartfelt thanks, from the Bermagui Bandits Social Golf Team,
for the use of the Cobargo Scout Assn community mini bus. We
use this great bus on regular occasions and appreciate it heaps for
all our trips away.
Thumbs Down
To attendances at BVSC area meetings (perhaps caused by
lack of advertising the events)
To the constant watering of local roads, causing a cement-like
coating on vehicles, almost impossible to remove
have in store for us
Charles Dickens ..
Love him or hate him
Charles Dickens is vilified as simply
a potboiler where others insist he is a
genius.
A prolific 19th Century author of
short stories, plays, novellas, novels,
fiction and non-fiction, he became
universally known for his depictions of the
social classes, mores and values of his
times, his remarkable characters, and his
mastery of prose in telling their lives.
Considered the champion of the poor, he
definitely brought awareness to the plight
of the downtrodden and have-nots. He
had his share of critics like Virginia Woolf
and Henry James, but also many
admirers like G.K Chesterton and George
Orwell, even into the 21st Century.
How did he write, where did he find
his characters and his stories These
questions may be answered while you
discussions and do the quiz, while
Info @ Cobargo
As you would be aware, the
Cobargo Voluntary Information Centre
has been a wonderful success story not
only for the community in general but for
all the visitors to the village and
surrounding district.
The Centre is staffed entirely by
volunteers and the Co-ordinator Dianne
Saunders has guided the development
over the past four years, under the
umbrella of the Cobargo Tourist and
Business Association Inc. For the last 12
months a new co-ordinator has been
sought with limited success, to take over
from Dianne who now requires some rest
from her many activities. If this can not
be resolved the Centre will be closed, not
because it needs funding or volunteers
but because it won’t have a Co-Ordinator.
The Co-ordinator would be
required to handle basic
administration
duties,
approximately 10 hours per
month. An efficient structure is in
place and full training would be
given. This would be a great
opportunity for anyone over 55
years, registered with Centrelink,
who is required to do volunteer
work within the community. This
volunteer position would be open
to anyone wanting to contribute to
such a worthwhile project.
At the recent Open Cafe
Community discussion the
consensus of those attending was
to develop local product availability
within the village, welcome visitors
to our community and promote the
beautiful environmnet we live in. This is
exactly what the information centre is
doing.
The most
common reason given
as to why people
choose to live in this
area is “I want to be
part of a real
community that works
together”. Well here is
a great opportunity to
do just that, put those
thoughts into action.
This position does not
need a degree or a
super person, just a
willingness to give a
little back.
Tilba Bites
Richard Tilzey
Easter is long gone, winter is here
and Tilba tourist traffic is now winding
down to intermittent grey nomad dropins,
the odd foreign visitor and occasional
coachload of wrinklies. The final
accounting for the Easter Festival showed
it to have yielded a profit of over $10 K,
much of which will go towards improving
the village’s amenities. Again, well done
to all involved. It was estimated that
between 7 and 8 thousand people
attended the festival.
Most of us Tilba-ites enjoy this quiet
time of the year, albeit that the hills are
alive with the sound of chainsaws as
temperatures start to fall. However, there
are always a few die-hards who can’t get
enough of festival life. The lure of the
Narooma Oyster Festival attracted some
locals of such a hedonistic bent. Chief
amongst these were Stu and Waz, both
safe in the knowledge that they and their
entourages could spend the night aboard
their respective moored vessels and
escape the worries of finding their way
back to Tilba after an ale or two. Despite
requesting details from a rather seedy
Waz on the following day, your
correspondent remained uncertain about
what actually happened on the night in
question. A few days later Stu was even
less forthcoming, muttering something
akin to “loose lips sink ships”.
Nevertheless, a picture gradually
emerged of a group of blokes and a zillion
bottles of wine huddled around a chip
heater on one boat, while the ladies froze
their delicate bums off on the other. It was
indeed a cold night.
Quiet times mean that there are
no startling events to report on, hence I
descend (as usual) into local snippets.
Simon Simpson recently acquired a new
toy, a handsome Harley Davidson
motorcycle. Doing his best to look like a
mean Bandido he roared up to Pams
Store and attempted to put air into his
tyres. After fiddling about for several
minutes (with much Bandido type
muttering about people’s mothers) he
complained to Cliffy Hayden that his airhose
connector was malfunctioning.
Cliffy quietly perused the situation and
dulcetly informed our would be Bandido
that it might be wise to first remove the
screw-on valve caps! A somewhat
deflated Bandido complied. The
reputation of the Simpson family was
partially restored by his grandson Digger
winning the Narooma News’ ‘catch of the
week’ fishing competition. Well done
Digger! It should be noted that Digger
has learnt his angling skills from his dad
Hoots, not grumpy old grandpa who is
currently attempting to frighten a few
barramundi during his annual Darwin trip.
Drom patrons are fast becoming
a bunch of hippies. No, we’re not referring
to long haired, dope smoking 60s throwbacks,
we’re talking about hip
replacements. Bionic Barney is fast being
overtaken by his drinking mates. Sir
Stanley certainly holds the record as he’s
just had his fifth hip replacement under
the proviso that he’s never to go fishing
with Lynchy again, or to go near his boat
for that matter. The latest hip recipient is
Jock. During his convalescence Jock has
been experimenting with the noble art of
pie making and many strange aromas
have been emanating from his and
Chook’s kitchen. Recipes are many and
a variety of local wildlife is looking
increasingly nervous. Indeed, there are
strong rumours about the imminent
launch of the Great Tilba Tilba Pie
Emporium. However, at this stage I can’t
see Alfie becoming too concerned. I
always remember the classic fast food
shop riposte; When asked “Eat here or
take away” always reply “Well both I
hope”. That usually evokes a response
from behind the counter!
The saga of Wendy Woo’s goldfish
continues. A pond inspection revealed a
startling fall in water level. How could this
be Her attention was drawn to a nearby
horse. A hasty head count ensued but no
fish were missing. However, the
possibility that piscine wetsuits may
become equine chewing-gum has led to
the wetsuit project being temporarily put
on hold. My suggestion that she rename
the horse Gold Caviar and enter it in the
Bega Cup was strongly rebuffed.
“Pam’s Store”
changes hands
Harry Bate
At the end of March, after five years
operating Pam’s Store at Tilba Tilba, Dave Bennett,
together with his wife Angela, and daughter Kelly
have moved out to their land at Dignam’s Creek
where they are constructing their new home. They
will be missed around Tilba, especially their dog,
Barney, who seems to have 109 lives, and takes
himself everywhere with no traffic fears. During
his time Dave introduced positive changes to the
store, the most noteworthy being Friday night
dinners which proved very popular with locals and
visitors alike. A small farewell function was held
just before they left.
New owners of the business are Cliff and
Sherry Hayden, son and daughter-in-law of Pam
and Kevin Hayden, so it is keeping it in the family.
They are enthusiastic about their new role, and
Cliff who is a painter by trade, has been busy
sprucing up the old building. Cliff says “We look
forward to providing a broad service to the local
community. We will continue with take-away food.
As a part of the business, we propose to open a
Treatment Room where Sherry will practise her
massage therapy.” The local community wishes
them well in this new chapter in their lives.
No-One Strangled in Tilba
Another successful Tilba festival is over. No-one dead or
strangled, although the idea was definitely there.
As a parking attendant up at the huge paddock by the highway,
you hear some very strange things:
Here are some of the questions and statements that came from
this year’s festival attendees ....
Is there room to park
Where are the coffee shops
Is this where the Tilba Festival is
Do I have to park here because I have a baby
I’m from the Council!
But we just wanted to stop for coffee.
Is there room for me
“Sorry girls” (she was driving a 4WD land cruiser). Will this be all right
if I park it on the grass
I can’t park here because I have dinner plans.
I know what to do because I used to co-ordinate this.
Where do we go
I don’t want to park here and have to walk because I have these stupid
shoes on.
I am here to work so I HAVE to park closer.
What’s on at the Festival
Is there anything closer – it’s just that Warren is at the pub…………
And the personal favourite bumper sticker: “Beware, Bitch with
Bullbar”
Cheers
Kiwi (an intrepid park attendant!)
Catch up with Proteas!
News from the Bermagui Garden Group
A number of years ago five
Bermagui ladies decided it would be nice
to visit local gardens once a month , with
no fuss or formalities. Eighteen years
onwards the group is still going strong.
We meet normally the first
Tuesday in the month at 10am with a plate
for morning tea. November is the
exception, when we let the horses have
their day and we meet the 2 nd Tuesday.
After a cuppa and catch-up chat, we thank
the owner of the garden for having us and
then explore the garden. None of us is an
expert, but there is a wealth of garden
commonsense and knowledge amongst
the group which we can all call on.
We are not a club as such so there
are no fees, but we do have a purely
voluntary donation box from which we buy
our supplies of tea/coffee etc. What is left
A happy group of gardeners visiting Terry Gilham’s protea property
Tina Cotton with the special cake, baked for her
birthday, at the May meeting of the B.G.G.
over at the end of the year is donated
to a local good cause. (The Red Cross
was the recipient of last year’s
donations.) We also have a name badge
which can be supplied at a nominal
price. Our year runs from February to
December and we have a volunteer
organiser, whose duties are not very
onerous.
Last month, May, we visited a
beautiful autumn-coloured garden at
Coolagolite. Set on the side of a hill, the
garden is almost all on one level and
has a wonderful view to the mountains
and a most picturesque pattern of black
and white cows scattered over the
lower paddocks. Next month we are
having something different – the Red
Cross Liaison Officer is giving us a
Rediplan Talk on Emergencies, which will
be at the Bermagui CWA Rooms in the
afternoon .
Each month a poster with details is
displayed at Bermagui Post Office, the
Information Centre, Central Tilba Post
Office and the Spires Nursery, Tilba Tilba.
Everyone is most welcome to join us – the
more the merrier, we say.
region an opportunity to be involved, to
participate, and to shine, the festival
organisers believe.
Chair of Four Winds Sheena
Boughen says the Festival would not be
possible without the participation of the
local community. “Everyone is a winner,
and we want to thank all our volunteers,
supporters and sponsors who make this
Festival possible, and have done for
years.
“The only event of its kind in
Australia, the Art Music Awards play a
critical role in fostering the Australian
contemporary music scene and
acknowledging the achievements of our
extremely talented composers,
performers and supporters, to the rest
of the world” says Brett Cottle, CEO
APRA/AMCOS.
The citation for the award
said that Artistic Director for 2010-
2012 Genevieve Lacey was to be
commended for the new exciting
direction the Four Winds Festival
took in 2010.
“The program was an
exciting mix featuring collaborations
between various high calibre local,
national and international artists,
diversity of performances and an
outreach program for community
and schools.
Sheena Boughen says this award
raises the bar even higher but she is
confident that next year’s festival will be
more exciting than ever.
Book Review
Heather O’Connor
Geraldine Brooks, Caleb’s Crossing,
Fourth Estate, $32.99 (reduced to $20,00 at
Dymocks)
I’m always nervous picking up the
latest book of a favorite author in case
I’m disappointed, but this was no
disappointment – it is Brooks at her best.
In the same vein as March and People of
the Book, she illustrates how her use of
language can just transport you into the
era of which she writes. In this case, it’s
into the early Puritan settlements in New
England, the relationship between a
Calvinist minister, his daughter and the
American Indians in the new settlements.
The central Indian character is based on
the real life story of Caleb
Cheeshahteaumauk, son of a chieftain,
who decides the best he can do for his
people is to learn the ways of
the white people. He
progressed in real life to
become an outstanding
student at the newly
established Harvard
University – this is about all
Brooks knew of his real life, but
around this she creates a
fictional account of the
relationship between Caleb
and Bethia, daughter of the
minister.
Her research into the
era is, as always, impeccable,
including how she conveys the
frustration of the women of the period
who were denied access to formal
education. Some of them, like our fictional
heroine, somehow, managed to get
around the restrictions.
Bethia becomes Caleb’s
first tutor, and learns as
much from him about the
lives of the Indians – their
friendship survives the
pressures of society and
the suffocating
restrictions that the
Puritans (in this case –
they weren’t alone!)
placed on women whose
roles were defined strictly
in terms of marriage and
motherhood.
If you can manage to get hold of
her earlier books, it will make this one
even more enjoyable. A great Australian
writer, a truly worthy Pulitzer Prize winner.
AWL Pet of the Month
Soft Footprint Recipes
Carole Broadhead
Warm pear fennel and prosciutto salad
3 Pears, prosciutto or bacon,1 fennel and a few green salad leaves.
Peel and core pear then slice. Place a good nob of butter in a pan and add the pear slices and cook till just tender. Grill 2 slices
of prosciutto or bacon.
While these are gently cooking cut fennel in half and slice thinly place on a plate then add the warm pears and crumbled
prosciutto. Drizzle some olive oil over if you like.
This can be an accompaniment to grilled fish or meat, or you can add some blue cheese and fresh bread for a light meal.
Fennel with goat’s cheese
1/3 cup of olive oil, 1 large fennel bulb cut into 8, 4 fresh bay leaves or 1 dry one, 1
lemon cut into 6, salt and pepper. 1/4 cup of fruity white wine and 100 gms of soft
goat cheese. Garnish with basil.
Heat a little oil in the pan and gently seal the fennel quarters add the fennel fronds
bay leaves and lemon, then season with salt and pepper.
Add wine and remaining oil cover and simmer for around twenty minutes until
cooked through. Remove the lid and cook for about five minutes until the fennel is
coloured and the liquid reduced.
