1.8 ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Several Federal <strong>and</strong> Territorial (GNWT) government departments play specific roles in providing safe<br />

drinking water. The roles <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of GNWT departments <strong>and</strong> of Federal departments are<br />

presented in Tables 1.1 <strong>and</strong> 1.2 respectively.<br />

systems, <strong>and</strong> en<strong>for</strong>ces the regulations.<br />

Provides technical expertise, training <strong>and</strong> operational assistance <strong>for</strong><br />

water supply infrastructure.<br />

Provides funding, research, <strong>and</strong> policy development in water <strong>and</strong><br />

wastewater. MACA’s enabling legislation allows communities to<br />

provide water delivery services.<br />

Responsible <strong>for</strong> monitoring, inspecting <strong>and</strong> regulating the discharge of<br />

contaminants to the environment.<br />

jurisdictions.<br />

Responsible <strong>for</strong> reducing the discharge of contaminants <strong>and</strong><br />

per<strong>for</strong>ming an environmental assessment be<strong>for</strong>e the water licences<br />

are granted.<br />
