Exciting times at PCSS
As many customers and regular readers of Enginuity will know, a
subtle but significant change took place in March this year when
Porsche Centre Sydney South became Sydney’s first factory-owned
dealership.
Most casual observers will have noticed little change in the operation
of the business over the past four months. However the transition will
bring many benefits to PCSS sales, service and parts customers over
the years ahead.
With its purchase, Porsche Cars Australia now owns pivotal
Porsche Centres in Australia’s two most important markets –
Sydney and Melbourne. This is an ongoing part of PCA’s strategy to
stabilise and strengthen Porsche in the Australian market and provides
long-term certainty for customers in important areas such as service
support, parts availability and used vehicle values.
I would like to pay special tribute to Ray Lintott, who five years ago
had the vision to build the best team and facility possible to reflect his
passion for Porsche and to retiring Dealer Principal Amanda Lintott,
on setting the highest of standards that we will continue.
From a daily business viewpoint, there has been little change. My
role as General Manager continues and after 10 years’ association
with Porsche, my personal passion for the brand grows every day.
You will also find the same familiar faces in our new vehicle sales,
service, parts and used vehicle departments, but we all share a new
excitement about the future.
In this issue of Enginuity you will read about the delivery of our first
GT3RS model, learn about the sensational 911 Turbo Cabriolet
arriving soon, hear about the rapturous reception given to the new
Cayenne models and find out how you can be part of future PCSS
Track Days and other Porsche customer programmes to explore the
full potential of your Porsche under controlled conditions.
We are also profiling Sydney’s two Official Porsche Body
Repair Centres – very good people to know if you have the
misfortune to require their specialised services one dark night!
Please make a point of calling in for a chat or a coffee next time
you are at PCSS for any reason at all.
News from the Factory
The new 997 GT2
The new 997 series GT2 – the most powerful 911
model ever homologated for road use – is coming to
Porsche Centre Sydney South in March next year.
With 390kW of power at 6,500rpm and 680Nm of
torque between 2,200 and 4,500 rpm from its 3.6
litre twin turbo boxer engine, the third generation GT2
is an astonishing 37kW and 60Nm more powerful than
its 996 GT2 predecessor, allowing it to sprint from
0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed
of 329 km/h.
Available exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a
manual six-speed gearbox, the 997 GT2 gains much
of its additional power from the adoption of the
variable turbine geometry (VTG) introduced on the
997 Turbo coupe, while for the first time Porsche’s
engineers have combined the turbocharged engine
with an expansion-type intake manifold.
Using the principle of oscillating air in the intake
manifold during the cooler expansion phase, this new
technology reduces the temperature of the fuel/air
mixture lower than in the 911 Turbo, resulting in a
significant increase in all-round efficiency.
Fuel consumption is reduced by up to 15 per
cent under full load despite the increase in engine
output, while the new GT2 also sets new standards in
terms of emission management and control.
Electronically controlled Porsche Active Suspension
Management (PASM) is part of the GT2 package,
as are 19-inch light-alloy wheels running 235/35
ZR 19 front and 325/30 ZR 19 rear tyres.
Priced from $425,700, the new 911 GT2 will be
in very limited supply. Talk to us now if you are
interested in owning one of the very few of these
fabulous Porsches coming to Australia.
997 Tops 100,000
The 100,000th Type 997 series 911 has been
built by Porsche at its Zuffenhausen, Germany plant
– a little over three years since production of the
sixth-generation 911 began in April 2004.
Never before have so many 911s been built so quickly
since the 911’s debut in 1963.
The milestone car, a Guards Red Carrera S with
manual transmission, has been delivered to a
customer in Frankfurt.
The 911 has remained the quintessential sports car
for the last four decades and in its latest 997 series
iteration will soon spawn its 16th derivative.
Porsche expected to sell around 36,000 911 cars in
its 2006 / 2007 fiscal year which ended on July 31.
Porsche back at Sydney Motor Show
Porsche will return in force to the Sydney Motor Show
from October 11-21 this year with a full range of
current models and a few exciting surprises.
Highlights of the display will be the latest
high-performance 997 Carrera and Turbo models, some
making their first Australian motor show appearance,
while the new Cayenne range will also be seen for the
first time at the Darling Harbour Exhibition &
Convention Centre.
“There will be some very special Porsches on display,
but they will remain a surprise,” said PCSS General
Manager Robert Lee.
Meet the Cayenne S TransSyberia!
This is Porsche’s latest Cayenne, the take-noprisoners
Cayenne S TransSyberia that is taking
part in the 2007 TransSyberia Rallye from
Moscow to the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar
from August 2-17.
Porsche has built a small production run of 25 of
these beasts specifically for the event, which will
take teams from 15 countries 7,100km through
Siberia and even parts of the Gobi Desert.
All are based on the current Cayenne S and are
equipped with all the off-road equipment available
on the Cayenne option list. This includes additional
underbody protection, side ‘rock-rails’ and a
differential lock, while the cars are also fitted with
a Club Sport-style interior incorporating a full roll
cage, sports bucket seats, fire extinguisher system
and two full-size spare wheels mounted vertically in
the luggage area.
All are naturally optioned with Porsche Dynamic
Chassis Control (PDCC) to eliminate body roll almost
entirely on bitumen, while on trickier terrain, the
Cayenne’s’ anti-roll bars can be completely decoupled
for maximum suspension articulation.
The event has attracted a number of high-profile
crews. The Cayenne TransSyberia team from
Germany includes leading rally driver Armin Schwarz;
the French Porsche entry includes three-time
Dakar Rally winner René Metge; Porsche Spain has
enlisted two-time motorcycle world rally champion,
Marc Coma; Porsche Cars North America has
New Zealand rally legend Rod Millen in its squad
and Porsche Cars Australia has installed journalist
David Morley and Technical Manager Paul Watson
in its entry.
Briscoe brilliant
Sydney-born Ryan Briscoe, is rapidly establishing
himself as the most successful Australian racing overseas,
recently recording his second outright victory in
succession for the factory-backed Penske Porsche RS
Sydney team in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
Together with German co-driver Sascha Maassen,
Briscoe overtook the sister RS Spyder of team mates
Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard in the closing
stages of round 6 at Lime Rock, Connecticut, setting
the fastest time of the race in the process.
The win enabled Briscoe and Maassen to draw closer
to the lead of the ALMS series at the halfway mark.
The victory followed Briscoe’s equally-stunning drive
in the Utah Grand Prix round 5 in May, when he
drove the final 75 minutes of the race on a single
set of tyres and one tank of fuel to head the more
powerful factory LMP1 Audis to the chequered flag.
Porsche wins 24-Hour race - again!
Porsche has repeated its 2006 victory in
the famous Nürburgring 24 Hour race for
production-based cars when a brand new 911 GT3
RSR entered by the Manthey Racing team took the
chequered flag for the second successive year.
Starting from pole position, the Manthey RSR
dealt with the challenging weather conditions
that eliminated many rivals and finished its debut
outing with no technical problems.
The similar Australia/New Zealand crewed 911
RSR of Queenslanders Tony and Klark Quinn and
New Zealanders Craig Baird and Kevin Bell finished
12th outright after an incident-packed race.
Test Drive of Your Life!
Few people would expect to take the first drive
of a new fully-capable 4WD vehicle on a racing
circuit, but that was just one of the surprises
awaiting the prospective purchasers of the latest
Porsche Cayenne models that gathered at Sydney’s
Eastern Creek Raceway in late April.
On arrival in small groups, they found a fleet of V6
Cayenne and V8 Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo
models awaiting them in ‘pit lane’ at the circuit, but
first – after refreshments – it was time to get a quick
but thorough product briefing from Porsche Driver
Training instructor Steve Pizzati.
The group then split into two, with half the
participants taking to the circuit, driving a series
of laps at quick road speeds, while the other
group headed for the large car park behind the pit
garages.
Those driving on the circuit rotated through
the full Cayenne model range, experiencing the
surprisingly brisk performance of the new
Cayenne V6, the even stronger performance in the
new 4.8 litre Cayenne S V8 and the spectacular
capabilities of the latest twin-turbo Cayenne Turbo.
But it was the car park driving test that was the real
eye-opener.
There, participants drove two mechanically identical
Cayenne S V8 models, but one was fitted with
Porsche’s new active suspension system, Porsche
Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) that is optional on
all new generation Cayenne models.
First there was a slalom run through a series of traffic
cones in the car with standard air suspension,
which in itself was impressive for a full-sized
SUV capable of carrying five adults and all their
luggage and towing 3.5 tonnes.
But the run with the Cayenne S fitted with PDCC
astonished all participants, with the vehicle handling
the twisting course with the aplomb and nimbleness
of a true Porsche sports car.
Cold Play!
Ask anyone who has been on one. Camp4 is a unique
opportunity to discover how to respond to nature’s
extremes behind the wheel of a Porsche.
Held in sub-zero Finland and Lapland, the five-day
programme offers you the chance to put Porsche to
the test in total safety, under some of the most exciting
conditions anywhere on earth.
As well as testing a range of the most exclusive sports cars
in the world, Camp4 also includes a snowmobile safari,
shopping north of the Arctic Circle, as well as the chance
to enjoy superb Finish cuisine, while you can relax after a
hard day’s driving with a sauna at the hotel. And as this is
his ‘home’, there’s even a good chance that participants
might meet ‘Santa’.
Priced at $6,280 (per person, excluding air travel), the
Porsche hosted package includes the availability of 911
Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S (two persons per vehicle) and
four nights’ accommodation with most meals.
The 2008 Camp4 is being held from January 28 to
February 1, but you’ll need to be quick. Porsche Centre
Sydney South has just 10 places available and those on
previous programmes have sold out well in advance.
On the Limit
Being part of a Carrera Cup Porsche racing team and
driving a current GT3 Cup car at its limit on a circuit
is the ultimate Porsche pleasure usually reserved for
those who fill the 25 available places on the grid for each
series round.
However a strictly limited number of enthusiastic
drivers and GT3 Cup aspirants each year can experience
this ultimate Porsche thrill through the Porsche Sports
Driving School GT3 Cup Level 5 programme conducted
at Queensland Raceway.
Using factory-built 997 Cup cars identical to those raced
by the likes of Craig Baird, Alex Davison and David
Reynolds in this year’s national Cup series, the course
is managed by Porsche Driver Training Manager Tomas
Mezera and uses other professional racing drivers as
instructors.
As a participant, you have your own personal trainer
and engineer and are able to monitor your progress by
comparing data and through expert tuition, honing your
cornering lines, braking and gear changing to improve
your lap times as you progress.
At the end of the full-day course you will have an
improved understanding of your own capabilities and the
analysis and use of data acquisition to keep monitoring
and improving your driving. A DVD with footage of your
laps from the in-car cameras, is also yours to keep,
providing a unique and valuable memento of the day and
your progression.
As each day is limited to a maximum of six participants,
places are strictly limited and in short supply. The
remaining 2007 courses are sold out, however advance
bookings are now being taken for the 2008 Level 5
programmes. Contact Lena at Porsche Cars Australia on
Club Sport Update
2007 sees Porsche Centre Sydney South holding it’s
own Track Days.
We provide expert driver tuition with our qualified
instructors who make sure everybody is having so much
fun learning to drive safely around a racetrack.
If your car is insured with Porsche Insurance, you will be
pleased to know that our PCSS Club Sport Track Days
are Vero Insurance approved. We only allow Porsche
cars on our Track Days so you will be sharing the track
with other like-minded owners.
We continue with our PCSS Trackside support from our
Porsche Technicians and we are now towing our large
Trackside Support trailer with the exceptional Cayenne.
Passion, style, reliability and fun is what these days are
all about.
Our regular PCSS Club Sport members are continually
welcoming new faces to our track days and often are
teaching our newest members how it helps to have a
sense of humour to go faster. Sometimes the social
gathering in the pits is busier than the track; I guess
everyone needs a break off the track at some stage!
We are sometimes asked if you need to have a GT3 or
Turbo to do a track day. Not at all, Porsche builds sports
cars, so any Porsche can be used.
You will see everything from a standard road car on
road tyres all the way up to track-modified Porsche cars
on slicks. Many of our members compete in Porsche
Club of NSW Supersprints and motorkhana events and
are very successful – and they don’t all drive 911s.
If you have a Porsche and are interested in
coming to a Porsche Centre Sydney South Track
Day, or would like some information on joining
our PCSS Club Sport program, then please email
clubsport@porschesydneysouth.com.au and we will
reply with further information and dates.
See you at the track.
Official Porsche Body Repairers
Few Porsche owners visit a body shop by choice. It’s usually the aftermath of your worst nightmare and
all you want to do is wind back the clock and have your special vehicle repaired and back to the way it left
the factory.
There’s only one way to ensure that and that is by entrusting it to an Official Porsche Body Repair Centre.
Fortunately for PCSS customers, Sydney has two of these factory-endorsed facilities, each measuring up
to the very latest Porsche standards of presentation, equipment and expertise. So when your Porsche
re-enters life after a repair or a restoration, it will have the same Porsche provenance that it enjoyed before.
Lee Smash Repairs
LSR Autobody knows Porsches like few other
body shops in New South Wales. Lee Koudsy
and his team have been repairing them for 25 of
the 30 years since the business was established
and they have been approved Porsche factory
repairers for the past 18 of them.
LSR is also a factory-approved repairer for a
number of other prestige vehicle makes, with
its new state of the art premises at Artarmon
recognised by all major insurance companies.
Working with the world’s leading vehicle makers
has kept LSR Autobody at the frontline of the
repair industry. As manufacturers have changed
and adapted their construction methods and
materials over the years, the team at LSR has
undergone extensive training in the use of the
latest products and repair practices, making
them arguably Sydney’s leading prestige vehicle
repairer. Understanding that your vehicle is not
just another car, but also a valuable investment,
is a cornerstone of their business philosophy.
Having factory-trained staff and the very latest
repair technology allows them to replicate
Porsche construction techniques and materials
and restore your car to its original factory
specification.
In the case of an accident, LSR have a hot line
operating 24/7, with all calls answered by a
trained professional who will arrange everything
from a tow truck if it’s not driveable, through to
assistance with the insurance assessment and
assistance with getting the claim underway.
Exclusive Bodywerks
By his own admission, Exclusive Bodywerks‘ founder
Ron Goodman has been desperately in love with
Porsches for at least 30 of the 31 years he has been
in the body repair industry.
His first one was a 1974 911 that ended up as a
Turbo-look coupe, while his wildest creation in the late
1980s was a 911 Targa with a 959 body kit and a
cut-down windscreen.
“That was a phase when it was fashionable to modify
Porsches,” he said. “but since then we’ve all woken
up and originality is now the most important goal. “
Ron’s personal Porsche stable verifies that and
includes a beige 1958 Speedster, a white 1964 356C
coupe and a 997 Carrera S. But the two that really
get enthusiasts’ eyes watering are his new green
997 GT3 RS and its matching track day tow car – his
identically painted Cayenne S.
The Cayenne was originally white with red wheels
and side-decals to match his (then) 996 GT3 RS,
but it has since been visually updated with the latest
Cayenne Turbo body panels and repainted as an
eye-catching promotional vehicle for the George Street,
Granville-based repair business.
Exclusive Bodywerks became an Official Porsche
Repairer nearly six years ago and Ron is particularly
proud of the fact that it was the first body shop in the
world to fully comply with Porsche’s latest corporate
identity programme.
“Porsche is 80 per cent of our business and we
work as close to the factory as possible to maintain
a Porsche standard of repairs,” he said. ”We only
use Official Porsche Centres like Porsche Centre
Sydney South for any mechanical work necessary
during the repair to ensure the safety and integrity
of the vehicle is retained.”
In classical music, ‘da capo’ denotes the
repetition of a musical passage. At Porsche,
it now stands for a new 911 opus – the 997
Series 911 Turbo Cabriolet that will ‘open’
at Porsche Centre Sydney South in September.
Combining the chassis, drive train and
handling dynamics of the 997 Turbo
Coupe with the sophisticated folding roof
features of the 997 Cabriolet has created a
unique sports car offering an indescribable
feeling of freedom.
Weighing just 70kg more than its Coupe sibling,
despite additional chassis reinforcement,
built-in roll-over protection and its lightweight
The new Turbo Cabriolet: Opus 911 in C major
three-layer soft-top that can be open or closed
at the touch of a single switch in 20 seconds,
the 911 Turbo Cabriolet offers a similar level of
road manners and performance.
The 911 Turbo Cabriolet with six-speed
manual accelerates from 0 - 100 km/h in
4.0 seconds, while with Tiptronic S that time is
cut to 3.8 seconds – just 0.1 sec adrift of the Turbo
Coupe. And thanks to the Cabriolet’s identical
drag coefficient of 0.31Cd, top speed
remains identical to the coupe at 310km/h, while
average fuel consumption is an excellent 12.9
litre/100km for such a high performance
sports car.
The 911 Turbo Cabriolet comes standard with
all of Porsche’s acclaimed chassis systems,
albeit specifically tuned for the needs of the
Cabriolet, while its standard list of passive
safety systems includes six airbags and
comprehensive rollover protection system (with
steel tubing integrated into the windshield frame
and rollover hoops behind the rear seats).
It is also equipped with the Turbo Coupe’s
massive six-piston front disc brake calipers,
which in turn came from the Porsche Carrera
GT.
Included in the extensive range of standard
features are a full leather interior, bi-xenon
headlamps, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, climate
control air conditioning, wind-deflector, Porsche
Communication Management (PCM) with
satellite navigation and 5.8-inch color monitor
and Bose Surround Sound System.
The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet will retail from
$357,500 for the six-speed manual with the
Tiptronic S model priced from $365,500.
However through Porsche Exclusive, you can
tailor your 911 Turbo to your own personal taste,
right down to the smallest details. Meanwhile,
the 911 Turbo Collection from Porsche Design
Driver’s Selection is available from the PCSS
Boutique to provide the appropriate apparel.
her red carpet arrival at PCSS is being eagerly
anticipated by her Porsche friends.
Sally’s road to stardom began in 2002 when
a Porsche 911 was cast for the leading role
alongside Lightning McQueen in the film, which
is the story of a hotshot rookie racecar that
discovers life is more about the journey than the
finish line.
Creating her in the metal as a touring
promotional vehicle was also a major task, as
Sally’s proportions are somewhat different
to those of her showroom sisters.
Starting with a five year-old 996 Carrera that
had covered 34,000km, Hollywood movie car
builder Eddie Paul shortened the 911’s wheelbase
by 18cm and raised its roof by 9cm to give it a
more upright windscreen. Maintaining the car’s
proportions meant keeping the doors intact, but
moving the rear jambs back 9cm. The finished
result: Fabulous!
Kids’ Day
The idea of taking children from the Sydney Children’s
Hospital for a drive in members’ Porsches was dreamt
up by the Porsche Club New South Wales about six
years ago and since then the day has grown to
become one of the Club’s most popular events.
This year’s Kids’ Day was held at the Historic
Aircraft Restoration Society’s (HARS) facility at
Illawarra Regional Airport near Wollongong, where
a wide range of historic aircraft have been returned
to flying condition by the Society’s 300 members.
PCNSW members’ cars were joined by a number of
current model Porsches supplied by Porsche Centre
Sydney South to take children direct from the
Hospital to the HARS facility. The PCSS vehicles
included Cayennes, which helped some families
travel together and also provided extra space for
wheelchairs.
At HARS, all 65 Porsches involved in the Day formed
a spectacular display in front of the main hanger
and while PCNSW members manned the barbeque
serving food and drinks, Gordon Soo of PCSS was
kept busy handing out Porsche posters to eager fans
from the back of a Cayenne. A special highlight of the
day was the arrival of a Royal Australian Navy Fleet
Air Arm Sea Hawk helicopter, with Commander Simon
Bateman and his crew bringing the machine into the
hanger so that many of the children could climb into the
cockpit. There were many smiles and photos taken!
After the Sea Hawk’s departure, the HARS visit ended on
another bright note for the guests, who were presented
with Porsche showbags as a memento of a highly
successful day. Now the challenge facing both the
PCNSW and PCSS is to top it in 2008!
Around the Block
- Ryan Collins
Ryan Collins has a dual role at Porsche Centre Sydney South,
working half the week as a Service Advisor and the other
days in the workshop as a Porsche Technician, making him
uniquely qualified to explain technical and service issues to
customers.
How long have you been at PCSS?
I have worked at PCSS as a Technician for four and a half
years, but for the past 10 months I have also been a Service
Advisor.
What are the benefits of this dual role?
I enjoy meeting the customers and learning the other side
of the business. Having a Tech back ground on the product
really helps me in the office to explain to clients what repairs
their car needs, or even the simple things like how something
should operate.
A lot of questions can be answered over the phone, which
without being so heavily involved in repairs, wouldn’t be as
easy.
What car did you want when you were 13?
A Holden Club Sport.
Who taught you to drive?
My Dad (Phil Collins) taught me to drive (and taught me to
sing!)
How many times did you do your licence test before
you passed?
I got it first time. The appointment was on my 17th birthday.
What was the first car you owned?
A faded red Ford XD Panel van – but I loved it!
Did you ever think you would end up working with
Porsches?
I always wanted to work on Porsches. I always loved them
and when the opportunity came up, I jumped at it.
If you were to buy a Porsche, which one would you
choose?
A 1981 930 Turbo. As in all things, 1981 models are the
BEST (I was born in 1981)!
Tech Talk Evening
Around 60 members of the Porsche Club New South
Wales were hosted for a Technical Event at Porsche
Centre Sydney South on June 19.
Porsche Cars Australia technical trainer Warwick
McKenzie gave participants a full run-down on the
new Cayenne models before he and PCSS Aftersales
Manager Rainer Behrens took the group into the
workshop to examine a range of new Porsche models
in detail.
There, on hoists and open for close examination were
a new 911 GT3 and GT3 RS, a Cup car and several
Cayenne models. However the item that captured a lot
of interest was the cut-away model of the 911 Turbo’s
VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry), that allowed PCNSW
members to appreciate how the latest models have
achieved their extra output and performance.
The evening, which follows previous PCSS technical
evenings, concluded with refreshments for all
attending.
Service Tips
With the weather finally giving us some of that
good wet stuff again, it is time to make sure
certain parts of your car are in perfect operating
order otherwise you might be making an unplanned
visit to an Official Porsche Repair Centre!
With cold or damp conditions, you need to make
sure your air conditioning system is functioning
correctly. Using the air conditioning system to
demist your cars windows is the best way to
providing excellent clear internal vision as this
system is a dehumidifier, absorbing interior moisture
and removing that dreaded interior window fogging.
Just remember that you can adjust the
temperature up so you don’t have to freeze inside
the cabin in order to see.
With the interior glass fog free, how do you keep
the external glass see through? Make sure the
wiper blades are clean and the rubber is soft. We
have just had many months of very hot sun baking
the wiper blade rubbers onto your windscreen, so
you may need to now replace them. At the same
time clean and polish the windscreen so that the
new wiper blades wipe smoothly and cleanly on the
glass surface.
Now that you can see where you are going, it is
vital to make sure your car goes where you want
it to go on wet roads. Make sure your tyres have
ample tread and correct tyre pressures. All road
tyres have a Tread Wear Indicator (TWI) on them
in the grooves to give you an indication to how low
the tyres tread actually is. Too low tread and your car
could aquaplane off the road; incorrect tyre pressures
can also lead to a similar disaster. A brief frequent
check of all these items will help keep you safe and
under control on the road.
Contact Porsche Centre Sydney South Service
Department and we will show you how it’s done normally
in the time it takes to have one of our coffees.
Stay in control, drive safe and see you soon.
Porsche enthusiast: Rob Annett
As his friends, Porsche Club New South Wales
members and regular readers of the Sydney Morning
Herald’s Cars Guide will know, Porsche Centre
Sydney South customer Rob Annett is a serious
Porsche enthusiast.
There are five Porsches currently basking under
the downlights in his showroom-like Sydney garage,
dating from 1968 and they are soon to be joined by a
new GT3 RS, but unlike some collectors, his love for
the marque encompasses all Porsches, whether rear,
mid, or front-engined.
His Porsche fascination began as a teenager when
he saw a red 944 advertised as the first prize for a
competition in TV Week. It was love at first sight.
“I remember thinking: ‘To get one of these I’m either
going to have to win a raffle or pull my finger out and
make some money’. I decided on the latter!”
Two years ago aged 39 he sold his industrial supplier
and machinery business and retired, giving him more
time to spend with his growing Porsche collection in
between managing his property investments.
Rob’s eclectic Porsche collection starts with a
beautifully restored 1968 911T and includes a 1973
mid-engined 914, a 1978 front-engined 924, a 1989
(India Red) 944 S2 and a 2003 Boxster S.
As a self-taught mechanic who has previously
restored aircraft, Rob saw the early 911 that he
purchased five years ago as a challenge.
The car came to Australia from the UK in the
mid-1970s, but had been stored and neglected in
recent years. Rob and his wife Jeanette spent the
first two years of their ownership restoring the car,
personally dismantling and preparing it for painting
in its original shade of blue, then painstakingly
re-assembling it.
“It’s great fun working on the older cars,” said Rob,
who is also the Social Secretary of the Porsche Club
New South Wales, “but with their more complex
electronics I draw the line on the later cars.
“I leave the care of my S2, Boxster and soon the GT3
RS (which he plans to enjoy at Club Supersprints and
PCSS Track Days) to Porsche Centre Sydney South.”
Hybrid Cayenne
promises Porsche performance
By Michael Browning in Germany
By the end of the decade, Porsche will launch a
hybrid V6-egined Cayenne that will out-accelerate
its petrol-fuelled equivalent to 100km/h, use
25 per cent less fuel and produce more torque
than a V8-powered Cayenne S.
The company has just taken the wraps off the
new ‘green’ Porsche at a special media
technology workshop in Germany, revealing its
advanced work on new parallel full hybrid
technology in conjunction with equal development
partners Volkswagen and Audi.
Parallel hybrid differs from the power-split system
currently employed by Japanese makers in that
the electric motor sits immediately behind the
engine and ahead of the transmission, offering
many driving and packaging advantages.
The engagement and disengagement of the
petrol engine is controlled by a specially
developed ‘Hybrid Manager’, which computes
some 20,000 data parameters compared with
the 6,000 of the latest conventional engine
management systems.
Offering a true Porsche-like driving experience,
the Cayenne Hybrid can be started and driven
silently in electric mode, using the energy stored
in its 288 volt battery, which has a peak output
of 38kW. Once more performance is required,
the petrol engine seamlessly springs to life and
takes increasing responsibility for propelling
the Cayenne. However even at speeds up to
120km/h on a level gradient, the Cayenne can
‘sail’ entirely without the intervention of its internal
combustion engine, saving further fuel.
The other beauty of the Porsche parallel full
hybrid system is that the components are all
accommodated within the existing Cayenne
body – the battery sits in the spare wheel well
– with no reduction in fuel tank or luggage
capacity, while the only external clue is likely to
be its model designation.
On the road, the Cayenne Hybrid performs
even more like a Porsche, with the 0-100km/h
acceleration time cut by 0.5 seconds compared
to a regular Cayenne. At the same time, the
combined forces of the petrol and electric motors
result in more than 500Nm of torque being
available from 800rpm-3200rpm, peaking at
550Nm at 1500 rpm – 50Nm more than the latest
Cayenne S.
Yet Porsche expect to be able to claim a fuel
consumption of 8.9 litre/100km for the New
European Driving Cycle by the time the
new Porsche is released by the end of this
decade – 4 l/100km better than the current
Cayenne’s 12.9 l/100km.
Going green the Porsche way promises to be
frugal, yet fun!
Look great; sound even better
If you own a current model Porsche 911, Cayman,
or Boxster, you can make it look even smarter
and even better with factory-warranted Aerokits
and sports exhaust systems from PCSS.
Boxster/Boxster S and Cayman/Cayman S owners
can add some additional racing style to the
exterior cars while reducing aerodynamic lift
with the distinctive SportDesign package that
comprises lip spoiler elements for the standard
front apron, a new auto-deploying rear spoiler and a
revised rear apron with diffuser design, inspired by
the Carrera GT.
The 911 Aerokit Cup (for 997-series 911 Carrera
Coupe models only) was aerodynamically refined
in the Porsche wind tunnel and has been carefully
designed to minimise lift on the front and rear axles.
To complete the picture, you should also add a
factory Sports Exhaust System that only plays the
engine’s music LOUD when you want it to.
The acoustics of this dual-mode sports exhaust
system are dependent on driving style, ranging
from standard output during normal road driving
to a more aggressive tone during performance
use. Modes are selected using a button on the centre
console (or ‘Sport’ mode button on vehicles with
optional Sport Chrono Package/Sport Chrono
Package Plus).
Customer Profile
Robert Karam PORSCHE
Robert Karam dreamed about owning a Porsche since
he was “a kid”, but the bug really bit when he went on
a PCSS ‘Driving the Range’ day four years ago with
Gordon Soo and fell helplessly in love with the 911.
However it took another four years for the young
civil engineer to make his dream a reality.
“As an engineer, I loved German cars because of
their technology and engineering. I had an Audi A4
Turbo, but I come from a working family and none
of my friends had anything like a Porsche and I
wondered what they would all think. Then there was
the cost – money was an issue at the time.”
Robert would have been more than happy with a
Boxster, but he wanted to share the pleasure of a
Porsche with his wife and two small children, so he
needed the rear seats.
He also became aware not long after his drive that
the (then) 996-series 911 was to be replaced by
the 997. So he decided to wait and in the meantime
purchased every single copy of WHEELS magazine
and read every article he could find about Porsches
and in particular, the 997.
“It took a lot of thinking, but finally my wife pushed
me. She said ‘you’ve been reading all these
magazines and done nothing – you’re a dreamer’
– so I decided to bite the bullet.”
Initially Robert looked at a Carrera 2, but the
engineer in him really wanted a Carrera 4.
Even his father Joseph who works with him
in their fabrication and erection business
RK Metalworks agreed. “He said to me: ‘The extra
money is nothing in the total price; get what
you want’ – so I did.”
Robert Karam’s decision has had an amazing flow
-on effect. Two university friends, George Gavanas
and Nat Talarico, who together run the consulting
engineering company Platinum Projects Australia,
found Robert’s passion for Porsche infectious and
one day in May this year the three of them walked into
Porsche Centre Sydney South and each placed
a deposit on a new 997.
Robert got his dream car – a silver Carrera 4 coupe
with Black interior and manual transmission with
Sport seats, Stainless Steel Exhaust tips and 19
inch Turbo alloy wheels, while George ordered a
black Carrera 2S and Nat chose a black Carrera 2.
“I just love the Carrera 4,” said Robert. “I’ve looked
through all the magazine articles to find criticisms and
there are none.
“Value for money for its engineering, this is the car.
Nothing comes close. And even better still, my wife
and kids love it too. Going out at weekends and
enjoying it is something we can do as a family.”
