Marathon Sunday in Chicago!
Welcome to all of our many
visitors who are joining us at Old
St. Pat’s, especially our runners
and wheelchair athletes who are
participating in the Chicago
Marathon. We are fortunate
enough to host one of the top five marathons in
the world with almost 45,000 participants who
literally come from every corner of the Earth.
This is a world class event for Chicago, and Old St.
Pat’s is extremely proud to be a participant along
the 26.2 mile course and an “official” cheering
sight for these great athletes. Congratulations to
the thousands of runners who are running on
behalf of another human being who cannot and to
those who have raised more than $4 million
dollars for worthy causes and charities. The
stories of why people choose to do this marathon
are sacred and incredible. Welcome in a special
way to all those who are joining us at the 5 p.m.
Mass today. You get an extra medal for being here
as we ask God’s blessing upon your aches, pains,
and blisters!
If you were with us last weekend, I hope you felt
the contagious energy created as a way of
acknowledging and celebrating the members of
Old St. Pat’s. And what a great Sunday it was with
“opening day” for our dynamic Family Ministries
with Partners, Foundations, and Blueprints
launching into a new year. As I mentioned at all
the Masses, and what was expressed by the
unbelievable staff of Old St. Pat’s, we are grateful
you are here and we will never waver at building a
church environment where all are invited and
hospitality is at the center of our gathering. In
creating a place of welcome, we help to establish a
way in which to better welcome the mysteries of
God. It happens not only on Sunday, but in all the
ways we express the mission of Old St. Patrick’s.
Thank you so very much for your continued
generosity to Old St. Pat’s, and for your continued
consideration of a gift toward the Children at
the Crossroads, our scholarship fund for the
30 percent of the students at Frances Xavier
Warde who could not otherwise afford such a
top rate Catholic education. We are deeply
grateful, ALWAYS!
TODAY’S (FAIR TRADE) MARKET REPORT
On Sunday, Sept. 20, more than 500 hundred people stopped in the church hall
to participate in the Alternative Market sponsored by The Justice Initiative
(Old St. Pat’s Social Justice ministry). Since then, we have been hearing from
many of the exhibitors who participated in this “Season for Social Justice” event.
We would like to share some of their remarks with you, and offer a big “thank you”
to Marilyn Antonik, Mariana Delinck Manley, and their team of volunteers for
planning and hosting this remarkable event.
Honoring the Dignity of Work
Supporting the Rights of Workers
“Old St. Pat's Alternative
Market was a success.
The vendors and the
congregation had a good
time and they both
learned about the efforts
of many organizations
in the promoting of
buying Fair Trade and
respecting the dignity
of workers globally.
All of you did a
FANTASTIC job. The
space looked great and
bright. I have done my
share of events at
church/temple
basements, but yours
was by far the nicest
and brightest of all.”
Ana Bermudez, Kiichpan
“That's awesome that 500 people shopped!
I can tell you the turnout for your event is really
encouraging and says a lot about the character
of the people who are members of your church.
I often have seen people who come to these
things who are very disinterested or simply
don't understand Fair Trade. All the shoppers
I interacted with were very interested and
knowledgeable. Even if they didn't know much
about Fair Trade, they were very inquisitive,
and I had many opportunities to share with
them the good work of Fair Trade. Thank you.
Stephanie, MATA Traders
“Congratulations to the Justice Initiative for
putting together an event that highlights the
plight of workers, not just in the U.S. but around
the world. It was very encouraging to see
people’s eagerness to hear the stories behind the
wares. At our table, people who had never heard
of Interfaith Worker Justice before were signingup
and asking for ways to get more involved.”
SEASON FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
“I really appreciate being invited to your
event. I met a lot of great people. I think it
is really clear, from my conversations with
some of your members and friends, this is a
group of positive, wonderful people that
really want to live by their values. Thanks!”
Brent Whistler, ArteVida
“This was an incredibly well organized
event. It was easy for vendors and
customers alike to chat, network, and share
information and products. We had a great
time meeting some of the wonderful people
of Old St. Pat’s and we would love to be a
part of the next Alternative Market!”
Cassie, The Green Grocer
“Thanks so much for your hospitality today.
It was a great market and I had a lot of fun! I
met some fantastic people I hope to form
relationships with, as well as the friendly
members of the church. I can't tell you how
much you guys stand out from other events
by your organization as well as hospitality.
Katherine, Katherine Anne Confections
“Fair Earth was delighted to be
involved in Old St. Pat's
Alternative Market. We had a
delightful morning, surrounded
by a myriad of vendors with a
large variety of fair trade and
socially conscious goods, as well
as a crowd of amazing people
interested in supporting these
endeavors. Thank you for
providing this opportunity for
fair trade products to reach such
a great group of interested
people! The fact everyone's
support and efforts are reaching
far into the lives of people all
over the globe makes us all the
more connected. Thanks again.”
AWAKENINGS
LIVING IN TO OUR BAPTISMAL IDENTITY: A SPRINT OR A MARATHON
BY TERRY NELSON-JOHNSON
Two or three weeks ago, I stood in the sanctuary of Old St. Patrick’s Church straining to ably fulfill my role as
godfather for the daughter of my dear friends. Not unexpectably, but no less delightfully, it was a great
celebration. Fr. Tom Hurley was on his game. Lots of friends and family gathered to affirm the celebration and
the declaration this little precious girl is indeed Loved: Ridiculously, Irrevocably, Passionately, Intimately,
Steadfastly Loved by God; by her parents (and godparents!); by her extended family; by her church. People
laughed. People cried. A lavish and joyful post-celebration gathering further extended the festivities. Many
people held, marveled over, delighted in, and snuggled with the newly baptized.
During the course of the last few weeks, if anyone happened to ask my friends if their beautiful daughter was baptized we can only
imagine them responding with a certain pride and wonder; “Oh YES, our daughter was baptized a few weeks ago at Old St. Pat’s — it
was quite a celebration!” Had I been present at the time of the question and the response, assuming my most authoritative
godfatherly persona, I would have offered a gentle corrective: To say this beautiful (and VERY cooperative) little girl was baptized on
a particular day in September 2009 at Old St. Patrick’s Church, is to suggest somehow her baptism is over; that it already happened;
that it is historical; that it has been taken care of and thus can be taken off the “to do” list; that all the paperwork is in place when it
will be needed in order to sign her up for and subsequently fulfill future sacramental obligations . . . ah, but my experience as a human
being, as a son, as a husband, as a father, as a godfather, as a spiritual director, as a “street theologian,” as a participant on and
companion with the hundreds who have made the Beloved Retreat tells me that what transpired in the sanctuary of Old St. Patrick’s
church, however beautiful and efficacious, was merely the formal beginning of a Baptismal Odyssey. In my experience the reality of
baptism — the felt knowledge and conviction we are indeed loved by the author of love is definitely a marathon as opposed to a sprint.
One can only imagine the effort those marathoners running past Old St. Pat’s on Sunday, Oct. 11, have expended in anticipation of
today’s run (having run the Chicago Marathon on a number of occasions, I can imagine!) It seems to me this is the kind of effort that
will be demanded in order that the baptismal miracle that was begun in our sanctuary might be brought to fruition years from now in
the person of a beautiful self-possessed woman who has come to know herself as loved . . . as baptized! We all need to be reminded of
our baptismal identity. My friends, and their church will have to remind that precious little girl over and over again who she really is:
In the middle of a scary night: You are loved — Baptized.
Post scraped knee: You are loved — Baptized.
Letting go, reluctantly, of mom’s leg in order to go to school for the first time:
You are loved — Baptized.
First recital “gone bad” — You are loved — Baptized.
Braces – lots and lots of them: You are loved — Baptized.
Pre-pubescent “chubby era:”
You are loved — Baptized.
Having her life “ruined” for the umpteenth time by her parents who just DON’T UNDERSTAND:
You are loved — Baptized.
First broken heart: You are loved — Baptized.
And on and on and on: You are loved — Baptized.
ALL effort to contribute to this tiny little girl’s baptismal identity will have been well worth it — because to know, to really know
yourself as baptized is to be free, and freedom is our ultimate destiny.
Anyone looking for a few baptismal marathon training partners might want to consider joining us for the 29th annual Beloved Retreat
to be held on the weekend of Nov. 20 - 22. The hope of the retreat is to help all participants to remember, to really remember they are
baptized. . . free. If this sounds intriguing, please contact Tammy Roeder to register at 312 .831.9350.
OLD ST. PAT’S JUSTICE INITIATIVE
Ten Thousand Villages to Sell Fair Trade Items at Old St. Pat’s
Sunday, Oct. 25
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Ten Thousand Villages, a local (Evanston) Fair Trade store, returns to Old St. Pat’s on
Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009.
Purchase Fair Trade coffee, tea, chocolate, or any of the hundreds of unique handcrafted items
made available from Ten Thousand Villages while, at the same time, contributing to greater
economic justice. Hosted by The Old St. Patrick’s Church Justice Initiative, the sale is a great
opportunity to get an early start on holiday shopping!
The sale also continues the theme of our recently concluded Season for Social Justice: Honoring
the Dignity of Work and Supporting the Rights of Workers. Fair Trade items are produced by
artisans throughout the world who otherwise would be unemployed or underemployed. Through
the Fair Trade movement, artisans and growers earn a fair price for their labor, get access to credit
and training, and develop mutually beneficial, long-term relationships with organizations dedicated
to the principles of human dignity and economic justice.
Come view these quality products from thirty-eight countries that are both beautiful and unusual.
Many newly arrived items will be featured, so even if you have shopped Ten Thousand Villages
before, you will want to stop in the church hall to see what’s new.
Since the store is staffed primarily by volunteers, the prices are very reasonable. Ten Thousand
Villages accepts credit cards, checks, or cash. Give a gift that gives twice and savor the flavor of
justice when you join us for some shopping on Sunday, Oct. 25 in the church hall.
Trade with a Conscience
Men and women around the world have a simple dream — to earn an honest living, to provide for
their children, and to be gainfully employed in a job that brings dignity and joy. Ten Thousand
Villages partners with thousands of talented artisans in healthy business relationships.
Often referred to as “Fair Trade,” their philosophy of helping to build a sustainable future is based
on the principle that trade should have a conscience. Through Fair Trade, artisans receive the
respect, dignity, and hope that comes from working hard and earning fair value for their work.
Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit, self-supporting alternative trading organization (ATO). ATOs
are non-governmental organizations designed to benefit artisans, not to maximize profits. They
market products from handicraft and agricultural organizations throughout the world. ATOs put fair
trade into practice and campaign for more equitable terms of trade for artisans from low-income
countries. More than one hundred stores nationwide allow Ten Thousand Villages to provide vital,
fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories.
Through careful monitoring and strict adherence to fair trade practices, consumers can be
confident they are buying items that have been fairly purchased from sustainable sources and
support the rights and dignity of workers.
Old St. Pat’s proudly serves Fair Trade coffee at all our meetings and events.
DEVELOPMENT
Membership through Spirit, Gifts and Service
What is Sunday Giving Commitment
The Sunday Giving Commitment (SGC) is the name for ordinary Sunday giving throughout the year by members of Old St.
Patrick’s Church. The vital component to the Sunday Giving Commitment is the Member Planning Card, where members
pledge their intended Sunday giving for the year. These gifts are the primary resource that supports the annual
operational expenses of Old St. Patrick’s and allows the staff and volunteer leadership to honor the budget and
thoughtfully plan for the year’s life enriching Liturgies, programs, and ministries. The Sunday Giving Commitment is a
critical planning tool needed to effectively host an active mission through the spirit, gifts, and service of the community!
Did You Know…
• The SGC allows Old St. Patrick’s the tools to budget and plan wisely for the year by knowing an estimate of
what gifts are pledged to be received by Dec. 31, 2010.
• Electronic Giving is an easy, environmental, and cost effective way to plan and contribute your gifts to
Old St. Patrick’s.
• Sunday Giving Commitment is the expression by the community to actively live the mission of Old St. Pat’s.
Oct. 18 Blood Drive
The Old St. Pat’s annual Blood
Drive, operated by the American
Red Cross, is an excellent opportunity for you to donate blood.
Donating blood is a perfect way to give thanks to God for His gifts of
life and health. In this modern world of PC’s, cell phones, flat screen
televisions, and GPS, mankind has created amazing products, but
there is one product that cannot be manufactured in a factory or
lab...human blood! You are the only source.
Did you know more than 85 percent of the world’s population will
need blood during their lifetime while less than five percent actually
donate That is why there is always a shortage.
Did you know it is very beneficial for healthy people to donate
blood When you donate, it causes your body to create new and
fresh blood cells. It is like an oil change for your car.
You can make donating blood a family event as there is no maximum
age for donating blood as long as you are in good health. The
minimum age for donating is 17; a 16-year-old can donate with a
parent’s consent.
OLD ST. PAT’S YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY
Vespers, the evening prayer of the Church, is a
part of the Church’s “Liturgy of the Hours.”
Christians throughout the world and throughout
the centuries celebrate the rhythm of each day
marking different “hours” with prayers of
thanksgiving, praise, and hope, and celebrating
the presence of God in our lives — in the simple
and profound moments of each day.
We’ve all Been Invited …
to join in the celebration of Vespers
Wednesday night, Oct. 14, 21, and 28
from 6:30 – 7 p.m. in the church hosted
by the young adults of Old St. Pat’s.
Reflective Music Starts at 6:15 p.m.
When evening approaches and
the day is already far spent,
evening prayer is celebrated
in order that
“we may give thanks for what has
been given us, or what we have done
well, during the day.”
We also recall the redemption
through the prayer we send up
“like incense in the Lord’s sight,”
and in which
“the raising up of our hands”
becomes “an evening sacrifice.”
Exodus World Service Welcome to America
We asked, and you gave generously!
Old St. Pat’s Young Adult Ministry and Connections would like to
express appreciation to all those who participated in the Exodus
World Service Household Goods Drive for Refugees last month.
Through your generous donations of time, talent, and treasure,
we were able to create several "Welcome to America" packs for
refugee families. This exceeded our goal of one pack for our
primary family. The goods were promptly delivered to families
from Iraq and Bhutan. Both countries have been ravaged by war
and conflict. The families are very grateful for your generosity
and assistance!
SOCIAL CONCERNS
People You Should Know
Barbara and Paul Doran
Q. How long have you both been volunteering at Old St. Pat’s
A. We have been volunteers for four years.
Q. Tell us a little about your ministry or volunteer position(s):
A. We are both involved with Sunday Mass: Barbara is a lector, and we are both
Eucharistic Ministers. We recently became involved with RCIA and the PreCana
Program. Paul is a wedding volunteer. We have volunteered at the World’s Largest
Block Party and the Pentecost Project.
Q. What prompted you to choose this area in which to volunteer
A. We are both transplants to Chicago and participating at Old St. Pat’s has been like
joining a family. We were regulars at the 5 p.m. Mass. We wanted to have a more
intimate experience of Mass and that is why we became Liturgical ministers. We
became interested in RCIA after having traveled to the Holy Land with Fr. Tom Hurley
and attending the Easter Vigil. We wanted to be with people who willingly want to
become Catholic and become members of Old St. Pat’s.
Q. What is the most significant aspect of your volunteer experience
A. Being able to give back our time to programs and events hosted by Old St. Pat’s — by
helping out when and wherever there is a need. By volunteering, we are contributing
to community building that is the essence of Old St. Pat’s. We sign-up for events
whenever possible. It is a wonderful feeling knowing so many people have the same
values and respect for Old St. Pat’s and its mission that we share.
Q. Our church’s mission is centered on hospitality; where or how do you host this
experience of hospitality outside our sacred space
A. In the past, we would go out to dinner with a group of people from the 5 p.m. Mass.
In the beginning of the year we came up with the idea of hosting potlucks at
people’s homes — rotating the place and everyone contributing a dish. The intent was
to create a Sunday family dinner experience — it worked! Our “family” at Old St.
Pat’s is constantly expanding and we are continuously forming closer relationships with
the people we see on a regular basis at Mass. We think a big part of this is the fact
we are Eucharistic Ministers every Sunday and are constantly interacting with the
people we meet. We are truly blessed to be a part of the Old St. Pat’s community.
Q. Why do you volunteer at Old St. Pat’s, and what rewards do you reap
as a volunteer
A. Neither of us have blood relations in Chicago, but Chicago is where we call home. The
relationships at Old St. Pat’s are some of the most genuine we have experienced in our
lives. We are continuously looking for ways to become more involved, to share our own
experiences with others, and to make them feel as welcome as we have at Old St. Pat’s.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming
a volunteer
A. It is a great way to give back to this wonderful church of ours and to meet other
people who share the same values and beliefs.
Q. What do you do for a living; do you volunteer anywhere else outside of
Old St. Pat’s
A. Barbara is a certified nurse midwife working with impoverished communities on
Chicago’s Southwest Side, and Paul is a financial consultant.
Optional memorial of St.
Margaret Mary Alacoque
(religious 1647 – 1690)
In the seventeenth century, many
Christians in France were being
taught that perhaps only a few
people could ever reach heaven.
This false idea was called
Jansenism. At just the time when this idea was
doing its greatest damage, Margaret Mary came to a
special understanding of God’s mercy. She was
chosen by Christ to arouse the Church to a realization
of the love of God symbolized by the heart of Jesus.
Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in a small town in
Burgundy, France. She had many difficulties in
childhood, including the death of her father, a serious
illness, and trouble with relatives of the family.
After considering marriage for some time, she
entered the Order of Visitation nuns at the age of 24.
After being a nun for three years, she received the
first of her revelations. The request of Christ was
that his love for humankind be made evident through
her. During the next 13 months, He appeared to her
at intervals. His human heart was to be the symbol of
his divine-human love. By her own love she was to
make up for the coldness and ingratitude of the world
— by frequent and loving Holy Communion,
especially on the first Friday of each month, and by
an hour's vigil of prayer every Thursday night in
memory of His agony and isolation in Gethsemane.
He also asked that a feast day be instituted.
Margaret Mary felt called to let people know about
this love.
Like all saints, Margaret had to pay for her gift of
holiness. Some of her own sisters were hostile, and
theologians who were called in declared her visions
delusions and suggested that she eat more heartily.
Later, parents of children she taught called her an
impostor, an unorthodox innovator. Against her great
resistance, however, Christ called her to be a
sacrificial victim for the shortcomings of her own
sisters, and to make His love known.
Margaret died at the age of 43 while being anointed.
"I need nothing but God, and to lose myself in the
heart of Jesus." The convent eventually began to
observe a feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and
later, a chapel was built there to honor Christ under
that title. After Margaret’s death, the observance
became a feast of the whole church.
