GUIDE TO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS The 2013 AWHONN Convention offers up to eight choices per time block, so plan ahead. Go to our website at www.awhonnconvention.org and review the objectives, descriptions and program schedule. Most sessions will be recorded and available to attendees at no charge shortly after the convention. PRE-CONVENTION (PC) workshops are concurrent sessions held on Saturday and Sunday before the official opening of convention. The longer time allotted allows for a more in-depth and comprehensive discussion of selected topics and greater opportunity for attendee participation. Several workshops include hands-on skill-based activities, small group work, demonstration and practice. There is an additional fee which includes a continental breakfast at morning workshops and beverages and snacks at afternoon workshops. GENERAL SESSIONS (GS) are one hour keynote sessions attended by all registrants. These sessions are inspirational, motivational and visionary; and appeal to all nurses caring for women and newborns. General sessions include award presentations for everything from extraordinary bedside nursing skills to excellence in writing, research and advocacy. MYTH BUSTING SESSIONS (MB) are four concurrent 75-minute sessions immediately follow the opening ceremony that are designed to get your convention experience off to a great start. Often there is little, if any evidence, to support common nursing practices but still we do it. Join us as we bust the myths and embrace the alternative - evidenced based care. SPECIALTY SESSIONS are 60- or 90-minute presentations. Attendees may choose among 8 concurrent sessions on topics related to specific research, practice or professional issues. These presentations offer the opportunity to hear experts present the most current information on nursing topics. ORAL PAPER PRESENTATIONS are included during the 8 concurrent sessions. These presentations will focus on either an Innovative Program, Case Study or original Research. Innovative Programs are newly created programs that address challenges in women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing practice, education or administration. Case Studies are in-depth analyses of actual complex patient care cases or practice situations that pose unique nursing challenges. Research papers are original research conducted by the presenter and consist of a problem statement and hypothesis, conceptual framework and literature review, methodology, and data analysis and interpretation. POSTER ROOM is an independent study of more than 150 Innovative Program, Case Study, Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Projects and Research posters. Poster presenters will be available to discuss their work. SYMPOSIA (S) are 75-minute sessions conducted by AWHONN staff or leaders, or partners such as March of Dimes. Only AWHONN-sponsored symposia will appear on the CNE transcript. Contact hours for other symposia are managed by the partner. There may be industrysponsored symposia. These symposia do not offer contact hours. MOVIE SCREENING (MS) is presentation of a movie on Tuesday afternoon, usually a documentary with relevance for all attendees. Following the screening, there will be a facilitated Q&A with faculty knowledgeable in the film’s topic. Contact hours will be offered for viewing the film in its entirety and participating in the follow-up discussion. BREAKFAST SESSION a 90-minute special interest session held in the early morning before regular convention session. There is an additional fee which includes a plated breakfast. 10 Music City Is Calling!
CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION (CNE) AWHONN CONTACT HOURS At this time, the maximum CNE that can be earned while attending the 2013 pre-convention and convention educational activities is 35 contact hours. This number includes CNE offered for poster review and attendance at optional, ticketed events such as the Headlines in Healthcare Breakfast. To obtain contact hours for a session, you must attend the entire session and complete an online evaluation. ACCREDITATION STATEMENT Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Accredited status does not imply endorsement by AWHONN or the American Nurses Credentialing Center of any commercial products displayed or discussed in conjunction with an educational activity. AWHONN is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP580. AWHONN has received the ANCC Premier Program Award for innovation and excellence in continuing nursing education. AMERICAN COLLEGE OF NURSE MIDWIVES (ACNM) CEU CREDIT An application for continuing education credit will be filed with ACNM. PHARMACOLOGY CONTENT AWHONN broadly defines pharmacology content as reference to the origin, nature, effects and uses of drugs. Register before April 30 and save | www.awhonnconvention.org
