LEONA was rescued with her sister from a family who didn’t feed or
groom her properly, nor did they seek medical attention when she
showed signs of illness. When Leona first came into rescue she was
filthy from living in a cage that was rarely cleaned, had mats in her fur,
was underweight, and sick from lack of care and food. After a young
Gainesville Rabbit Rescue volunteer took the rabbits home and they
received proper care and love, they have thrived. Leona has been
Putting your money where
your heart is … making
charitable donations count
By Sharon Nataline
Giving to charity is an excellent way to lend a hand to
others while enjoying significant tax deductions in the
process. Donations made to non-profit organizations [tax
exempt organizations under IRS
section 501(c)3] are tax deductible.
You’ll find there are a host of non
-profit organizations that can benefit
from even the smallest of donations.
From humanitarian organizations to
animal groups and beyond, the
choices and types of charity
organizations are extensive, including
Educational Charities; Charities
for Diseases and Illnesses;
Animal Charities or Disaster/Relief
Charities. Because there are so
many worthy causes, choosing
organizations to receive your
support can be an overwhelming
d e c i s i o n . B y t h o r o u g h l y
investigating each charity, you can
be assured that you are selecting an organization that
does work you admire in a fiscally responsible way.
Nonprofit organizations rely heavily on donations
to fund their work. To make certain your humanitarian
efforts are going to a good cause, nonprofit organizations
should be able to produce a copy of their 501(c)3
certificates and should make their financial records
available to donors. You may ask to see Form 990, which
is the organization's federal tax return, for the last several
years. Carefully look at the amounts the non-profit spends
on fund-raising, administrative costs and salaries. A wellrun
organization will spend no more than 25 percent on
administrative and fund-raising costs. While charities
tackle some of society’s most complex and intractable
issues, such as animal welfare, these are long-term
objectives. To be successful, organizations must be high
performers year after year.
Charity Navigator is one available resource that
provides information regarding the fund-raising practices
of nonprofit charities. This watchdog organization also
provides a description of U.S. non-profit organizations
that have received a 501(c)3, or tax-exempt, designation
from the government. Charity Navigator rates the
charities by evaluating a ratio of program expenses to
administrative and fund-raising expenses, the percentage
of assets devoted to operating costs, organizational
efficiency and the amount of assets and revenue. Charity
Navigator considers charitable organizations to be high
performers based on (1) finances; (2) accountability &
transparency; and (3) effectiveness & results. The website
for Charity Navigator is www.charitynavigator.org.
High salaries should not signal a red light to not
give, just as low salaries should not signal a green light to
PAGE 4 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • APRIL 2011
Point of View
give. Salary levels paid to charity staff should be based on
the skill, experience and education necessary to move
forward the work of the organization. Charities compete
with businesses and the government for employees and
must therefore offer reasonable wages in order to attract,
hire, and retain competent people. However, many charity
employees are willing to sacrifice the higher pay in the
private sector for the psychological rewards of working for
a good cause.
In these challenging economic times, it is more
important than ever to manage money wisely and to do
a little research on the nonprofit
organizations that are of interest
to you. Understanding the organizations’
structure and activities is
important, especially National/
International organizations, to make
sure the organizations are in
alignment with your expectations
and beliefs. The Salvation Army and
the March of Dimes are examples of
two nonprofit organizations that may
be structured or include activities
that are at odds with the potential
benefactor. The Salvation Army,
unlike most other major charities,
is not required to file public
information because it is considered
by the IRS and state authorities to be a church, so there
would not be the transparency and accountability
expected with a 501(c)3 organization. Although the goal of
the March of Dimes is to help fight birth defects, the March
of Dimes also funds outdated, cruel animal experiments.
Charity Navigator gave the March of Dimes a 1-star rating,
compared to other similar organizations whose ratings
were 3 or 4-star (4-star being the highest). These are
just two examples of identifying potential reasons for
conducting research before donating to charitable
organizations.
There is something satisfying about giving locally.
Giving on the local level is an excellent way to help
improve your local community, help your neighbors,
improve your environment and save animals’ lives. No
donation is too small. Your donation added to the
donations of others can make a huge impact on your
community. Choosing to give to local charities is a
worthwhile way to see the benefits of your donation firsthand.
When you choose to donate to local charity
organizations, you can see where the money goes, view
the programs, and more. During a time when there are
fewer resources to go around, our local charities need
support more than ever.
Donate now and donate often, if you are able.
Please consider selecting one or more of the animal
welfare organizations included in Critter magazine; all
organizations featured in Critter deserve to be, and
could become, one of your favorite local animal charities.
Horses healing humans:
The power of Equine Therapy
By Valorie Collante
Horses have long been thought to have special energy
that is conducive to healing. They are extremely sensitive,
aware of their surroundings, and generally inquisitive.
Using horses for psychotherapy (Equine Assisted
Psychotherapy) is a solution-oriented approach to therapy
in which horses assist in emotional growth and learning.
Equine therapy has been shown to be effective with
issues facing people today; such as depression, anxiety,
behavioral issues, relationship problems, communication
issues, and substance abuse. It has also been shown to
relieve symptoms of severe trauma and Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD). Troubled and at-risk adolescents
are especially receptive to equine therapy. When regular
talk therapy is not getting through, equine therapy may be
a more effective way to reach people.
Psychotherapists started bringing horses into therapy
sessions about 10 years ago; since then this nontraditional
approach has gained popularity and become
more widely known. It does not require any prior
experience with horses.
A new type of equine therapy that is interactive and fun
treats the entire family. Horses are wonderful role models
for families, since they live in family groups and have
structured lives not unlike humans. They have a hierarchy
in their herd or family and each member is clear about their
role and the rules of the family. Family equine therapy
provides a powerful opportunity for positive change and
helps clients move beyond talking, to experiencing change.
The Equine Assisted Family Therapy model was
founded by Mental Health counselor Lorisa Lewis of
Stable Foundations. The Equine Assisted Growth and
Learning Association (EAGALA) is dedicated to improving
the mental health of individuals, families, and groups
around the world by setting the standard of excellence in
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted
Learning, also known as "horse therapy" or "equine
therapy." EAGALA also trains therapists to incorporate
horses into their practice.
Equine therapy, which involves clinical professionals,
has been shown to be effective in treating a variety
of mental health and human development needs.
Participants learn about themselves by participating in
activities with horses and then discussing feelings,
behaviors and patterns. By allowing clients the opportunity
to overcome fear and develop confidence, horses provide
the means for dealing with intimidating and challenging
situations in everyday life.
Name __________________________________________________________________
Read this information about pet rabbits. Some of
the words are in bold type. Circle the bold words
as they appear in the puzzle below. The words
Rabbit Habits
may be spelled up and down, sideways,
backwards, or diagonally.
A rabbit can be a gentle, friendly pet. Rabbits are
curious; they like to play with such toys as a
paper bag, a cardboard tube, or an old towel. A
tin can, as long as it has no sharp edges, is also a
favorite toy. Rabbits are frisky and need exercise.
They chew things, so electrical cords need to be
kept out of their reach. Rabbits eat special pellets
and enjoy treats like carrots, fruit, bread, and
crackers. Rabbits are very clean; with training,
they can learn to use a litter box, like a cat does.
A rabbit needs a cage, dishes, a water bottle, a
salt lick, a leash, and a brush. Sometimes a
rabbit may need health care from the veterinarian.
And all rabbits need love, love, love!
The uncircled letters in the puzzle spell the names of something else that pet rabbits need. Write the two words on these lines.
Conservation Burial:
A new approach to burial
for you and your pets
By Jessica M. Torrence
Environmental consciousness is at an all time high
these days. With climate change and the effects of an
increasing population affecting the entire world, more and
more people are looking for “green” ways to live their
lives…and even their afterlives!
Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery is operated by
Conservation Burial, Inc. (CBI), a non-profit, 501(c)
13 organization. The mission of CBI is to promote natural
burial practices in cemeteries that conserve land and
reunite people with the environment. CBI provides a
natural burial choice that conserves land while protecting
the environment and water quality. Burial service fees are
committed to land acquisition, protection, restoration, and
management. Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery is a
natural burial ground within a protected conservation area,
located in southern Alachua County. The cemetery is
peaceful and well-maintained, designed to meet the needs
of each family and to commemorate the lives of those
buried on the grounds. Imagine visiting a cemetery in a
natural landscape, with trails and wildlife and night-time
stargazing. The surrounding property is a natural mix of
open grassy areas, hardwoods, and wetlands.
There is a growing trend among animal lovers to have
not only a final resting place for their pets, but also the
option to repose with their companion animals. For
a reasonable burial fee, humans and pets up to
150 pounds can have their final resting place at Prairie
Creek Conservation Cemetery. This pet burial option is
especially beneficial for those who live in apartments or
housing without property.
As a non-profit organization, CBI offers the most
considerate care for the passing of a loved one. Many
options for burial are available, so long as items used for
the burial are biodegradable; for example, natural fiber
burial shrouds or wood caskets. Upon request, CBI will
make referrals to companies providing these goods. Burial
services can be any length of time and the land can be
utilized for viewing or other ceremonial purposes, carrying
out religious or personal traditions, etc., at no additional
charge. Space for the burial or scattering of cremains is
also available. Each gravesite is marked by the cemetery
with a small bronze marker placed in the center of each
grave, with the name and date of the loved one resting
there. Pets and humans can rest together, a very
important step in affirming the human/animal bond .
Visitors stroll the grounds of
Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery
For human burials, the Final Burial Wishes form can be
downloaded from the CBI website. This document acts as
a planning tool for individuals and CBI in that it allows
people to share their final burial wishes with their loved
ones as well as provide CBI the information it needs to
control the availability of future gravesite space. Burial
sites at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery can not be
purchased in advance; therefore dedicated burial funds
can remain in the individual’s control until absolutely
necessary.
For those who are environmentally conscious and are
considering Conservation Burial, CBI encourages phone
calls to request additional information and to discuss any
wishes with the organization. CBI wants to help make this
a meaningful experience for family and friends. Visits to
the Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery during any
daylight hours are allowed, but since the cemetery has
just opened and does not have a completed entrance,
initial visits are by appointment only.
Conservation Burial at Prairie Creek Conservation
Cemetery in Alachua County provides a place of rest and
beauty for humans and companion animals, as well as
creating and maintaining a sacred environment for years
to come. This sustainable land is a fitting end for those
who wish to be a part of many generations’ new
beginnings and continued enjoyment of nature.
RESCUE PROFILE
Gainesville Rabbit Rescue
By Jessica M. Torrence
Kathy Finelli knew nothing about rabbits, but like all
animal rescue volunteers, she has a love of animals. So
when she found a baby rabbit in her yard, scared and
alone, she knew it would not become a part of the statistic
that puts these pets in third place for most euthanized
animal at animal shelters across the nation. She brought
him into her home. And just like the rest of us who have at
one time been in her position, her next thought was, “What
now” Little did she know that moment was the beginning
of an eight year journey that led to her becoming
Executive Director of Gainesville Rabbit Rescue.
About Gainesville Rabbit Rescue
Gainesville Rabbit Rescue (GRR) is an adoptionguarantee,
non-profit, 501(c)3 animal rescue group,
founded by two University of Florida rabbit-loving
students. GRR is still the only organization in Gainesville
that caters to this type of companion animal. With no paid
staff, they rely heavily on volunteer assistance and foster
homes for their 125 adoptable rabbits, with dedicated
rabbit homes reaching as far north as Valdosta, GA, and
as far south as Daytona. They also depend on the
generosity of donations, since they keep their adoption
fees extremely affordable; just $55. In an effort to find
these furry friends a permanent home, GRR volunteers
show off their loving, companion pets at PetSmart on
Archer Road on the first and third Sunday each month,
and at other area locations.
In addition to the adoption events, Kathy Finelli and her
volunteers are known for making appearances at libraries,
festivals, and schools to educate the public about rabbit
care. GRR is also working on a project to raise money
for the appropriately named IHOP, Improved Habitat
Overhaul Project, to make the rabbit area at their facility
near Williston livable for summer. GRR is willing to
purchase the goods; they just need the donated time and
expertise of a civil engineer, licensed electrician, and A/C
specialist. All donations are tax-deductible.
Adopt - Don’t Buy
During the Easter season rabbit adoptions from GRR
increase, and with each adoption comes the free gift of
education, knowledge, and patience of caring rabbit
rescue volunteers. Also at Easter, GRR and other rabbit
rescue groups help educate the public about the pitfalls of
purchasing rabbits for children during this holiday.
Parents may give in to the pressure of their child’s,
“I want a bunny,” and purchase from a pet store a tiny,
adorable creature with a little cottontail and a twitchy nose.
Pet store rabbits are sold as young as three weeks old,
barely old enough to be away from mom, much less
spayed/ neutered or litter-trained; all of the qualities we
would want in a happy, healthy pet. A rabbit reaches
sexual maturity at three months of age. Often, after the
kids get bored and summer activities take the place of
an Easter gift sitting in a cage, the now-grown rabbit
is surrendered to a shelter. Or worse, parents resort to
releasing this domesticated creature into parks and
woods, where the rabbit usually becomes prey. It is
reported that 80% of rabbits sold at Easter live less than
Kathy Finelli and Candy Man, a recently rescued rabbit
one year. However, with proper care, domesticated rabbits
can live 7 to 12 years.
Changing Perceptions
Rabbits are classified as both pets and livestock, so
they are farmed, experimented on, eaten, and made into
lucky charms. The fur industry still makes use of rabbit fur,
killing up to 40 rabbits for one coat. Rabbits are also used
for training hunting dogs, and for rehabilitation of large
predators. These atrocities against domestic rabbits
still occur because our culture has yet to elevate these
equally worthy companions to the same level as dogs and
cats.
Gainesville Rabbit Rescue seeks to change these
perceptions and to raise awareness about the joy of
knowing rabbits as pets. With a low adoption fee that
encourages people to adopt, not shop, and with help from
dedicated volunteers and supporters, they are able to
save the lives of approximately 175 rabbits per year.
Domestic rabbits from GRR are spayed or neutered
before they go to their new homes. Simply put by Kathy
Finelli, “The key to a healthy, happy rabbit is spaying and
neutering.” GRR loves their rabbits, takes the placement
of rabbits very seriously, and is dedicated to finding the
right home for each rabbit.
The success of Gainesville Rabbit Rescue’s mission
to rescue, rehabilitate and adopt out rabbits to loving
homes, as well as to educate current and potential
rabbit caretakers, depends on the support of caring
individuals. For more information or to donate, please visit
