TorrenceAround 3 pm on August 12, 2010, two Great Danesslipped out of their caretakers yard when a family memberaccidentally left the gate open at the Marion County homeof Holli Tencza. Less than one mile from their home,Samson and Epic were shot.Epic was pronounced dead on the scene as Samson,gasping for air, continued to fight for his life. The GreatDane died later that night in the care of emergencyveterinarians.The tragedy began when Chris Monteiro called 911 toreport the two animals, claiming they tried to attack himwhile he was working inside his garage. The 911 operatorinstructed Monteiro that the best course of action was tostay inside his home and someone would be sent out tohelp. Instead, Monteiro went outside a second time,armed with his Glock 9mm pistol. He said he saw the dogschasing children down the street and shot the two GreatDanes when they ran toward him as he stood in his yard.Witnesses told Kray, Tencza‟s lawyer, that the dogsweren‟t in Monteiro‟s yard, but that Monteiro was in theroad. Witness statements also state that there were nochildren outside playing and the dogs were nowhere nearhim. The “Stand Your Ground” bill, nowF.S. 776.013, states, “a person…has no duty to retreat…and [can] meet force with force,” and this law caused theissue to be legally convoluted.The State Attorney announced on September 21 thathe would not be charging the shooter of Samson andEpic, in part because the shooter says he was in fear forhis life and that they couldn‟t prove criminal activity.But Monteiro is not innocent. He admitted he killed thefamily pets. He was not prosecuted because Floridaallows people to protect themselves from a perceivedthreat without backing down. Now, that law has been usedto protect a man who left the safety of his home to shoottwo dogs that could not have pursued him. He did not“stand his ground,” but instead re-entered the situationafter placing the 911 call.It is obvious someone lobbied to protect people frompeople. Who will lobby to protect animals from people?This is not justice. They were dogs! Not burglars, notmurderers, not rapists trespassing on land, breaking intohomes. Animals are different and deserve different laws.We need to lobby for laws that protect our pets and wildlifefrom their greatest threat, people.Today, Tencza can take some solace in the fact thatthe investigation was re-opened, and the State Attorneymoved quickly to investigate the situation. The joy of hikingwith your dogBy Melanie PhillpotHiking with your canine companion is one of life‟ssimplest yet greatest joys! A walk in the woods, aka ahike, is a healthy, mentally and physically stimulatingactivity for both you and your dog. Conditioning andplanning are key elements to your enjoyment.Dogs pant to cool off so use caution on excessively hotdays. Consider heat index (temperature/humidity level)and physical conditioning for each of you when planning ahike. Conditioning means building up to long hikesgradually. Your dog‟s paw pads need to callus up a bit, hisaerobic fitness needs to be satisfactory and he needs toknow a few basic commands and trail etiquette.Be sure to offer your dog cool water frequently; plan on1/3 cup of water for every half mile. Use a wide-mouthedbowl to offer the water as it helps catch the splashes. Youmay pour the unused portion back into your dog‟s watercarrier and gauge how much water your dog is actuallyingesting.Condition your dog for hiking by walking togetherregularly. Build up your distance gradually. Your dog willencounter sand, dirt, water, gravel, weeds and perhapssome concrete or asphalt on hikes. Be sure to conditionyour dog for all of these walking conditions. Be aware ofthe temperature of concrete, asphalt or sand and theimpact on your dog‟s paws. It‟s handy if your dog will respond reliably to“sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “leave it” commands. Many hikersalso train their dogs to respond to “this way” and“that way” (or “right” and “left”) on command. Whenencountering another hiker on the trail, practice good trailmanners and have your dog move off to the side and sit/stay until the hiker passes. Not all humans appreciatedogs and you are an ambassador for all dogs on trailsevery time you hike. If another dog is approaching, againhave your dog sit/stay off to the side of the trail. Confirmagreeability with the other person before you let your dogsmeet nose to nose. If your dog relieves himself on the trail,be sure to pick it up and pack it out. Trash receptacles areusually available at the trailhead.Familiarizing yourself with the trail you‟ll be visiting maybe as simple as picking up a map at the trailhead, and/orpreparing ahead of time by visiting the park‟s website tobe sure dogs are allowed. That‟s where being a good dogambassador comes in … we don‟t want to lose theprivilege of hiking with our dogs due to someone else‟spoor trail etiquette!There are innumerable trails to hike throughout NorthCentral Florida. Check websites for the city parks, countyparks, state and national parks, local, state and nationalforests, plus the water management district properties,preserves and more. Mistofelees - Adopting a cat is a difficult matter. It isn't just one of your holidaygames. T.S.
