Background information NativityMiguel Scranton A Collaboratively Sponsored Middle School This effort dates back to Assembly 2010. One of our sisters, representing her table, came to the microphone and stated a desire that the new Leadership Team consider opening an IHM school. Her recommendation drew sustained applause. It became clear to the team that we lacked the funds and staff to guarantee the It became clear to the team that we lacked the funds and staff to guarantee the success of the proposed IHM school far into the future. While looking for other options, we received a phone call inviting us to participate in a discussion that would consider the possibility of creating a tuition-free school in Scranton. It would be based on the NativityMiguel model. This school would hopefully be sponsored collaboratively and reflect the design of Mother Seton Academy in Baltimore. Sisters <strong>Terry</strong> O’Rourke and Ellen Maroney, representing the Leadership Team, were present at this first meeting and at all subsequent meetings.
Represented at the table were Scranton diocesan personnel, representatives of Catholic Social Services, members of four religious congregations of women and two congregations of men, executive officers of catholic colleges and universities as well as leaders on the Scranton civic community. Monsignor John Jordan, former Executive Director of the NativityMiguel System based in Washington, D.C., agreed to serve as a consultant to the group. A formal feasibility study was undertaken and, not surprisingly, it became quite clear that the population we hoped to serve was available and interested. NativityMiguel Scranton will seek out middle school students (grades 5-8) who have academic ability to do high school and college work but, for various reasons, are falling through the cracks in the private, catholic or public schools. The students will also need to prove that their families are in need of financial support. The Leadership Team kept our Mission and Ministry Committee apprised of the process, progress and the problems we faced. As the team traveled to 25 Regional Gatherings in the course of the next two years we shared the evolving story of the proposed NativityMiguel School in Scranton. We met with great encouragement. At Assembly 2012 we shared this dream and our cautious hopes that as collaborative sponsors, we might be able to open a school that would meet the needs of a new immigrant population.
