R E S I D E N T S ’ & S T U D E N T S ’ by Terreze Gamble, MD, PGY-3, Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine Residency C O R N E R Mind-Body Medicine Many residency programs have implemented various aspects of complementary and alternative medicine, including an acupuncture specialist at Morton Plant and the initiation of a mind-body medicine grant in Tallahassee. Mind-body medicine enhances the mind’s capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. It includes but is not limited to meditation, prayer, music, art and dance therapy. One key theory of mind-body medicine is biofeedback research. This concept has shown that individuals can learn to control brainwave activity, cardiovascular and respiratory functioning. By focusing in on one’s “core” or wherever the individual finds that calm place, he or she can obtain a more variable brainwave activity similar to what we see on a fetal monitoring strip, which, as you will recall, is reassuring. This in turn invokes a sustainable lower heart rate. Deep breathing is one of the methods used to create that sense of calmness. The idea is that persons experiencing anxiety can, at any time, come back to their core. Mind-body medicine focuses on the interactions among the brain, mind, body and behavior. The emotional, mental, social, spiritual and behavioral factors intertwine in a dynamic way, which directly affects health. This field uses a variety of techniques: relaxation, hypnosis, meditation, yoga and concepts essential to conventional medicine, such as cognitive-behavioral therapies and group support. Mind-body medicine has provided considerable evidence that psychological factors can play a significant role in the development and progression of certain disease states. These techniques have even been employed in the treatment of various types of pain. Mind-body medicine approaches have potential benefits and advantages. The physical and emotional risks of using these interventions are minimal. Future research focusing on basic mind-body mechanisms and individual differences in responses is likely to yield new insights that may enhance the effectiveness and individual tailoring of mind-body interventions. 30
