AAFP Congress of Delegates in San Diego
John M. Montgomery, MD, of Jacksonville
was awarded the 2008 Robert Graham
Physician Executive Award by the American
Academy of Family Physicians at the AAFP
annual meeting in San Diego in September.
This award recognizes an outstanding family
physician whose executive skills in
health care organizations have contributed
to excellence in the provision of high-quality
health care. Dr. Montgomery is vice
president for professional relations at Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Florida. He is the
immediate past president of the Duval
County Medical Society, secretary and
board member of the Florida Patient Safety

in family practice, a fellow of the
American Academy of Family Physicians
and a member of the FAFP.

At the 2008 AAFP Annual Leadership
Forum, Florida received a second-place
award for the Highest Percentage of Increase
in the Active Category in 2007 for chapters
with more than 1,000 active members.

Dr. Shahady Honored with National Award
The American Academy of Family Physicians and the
Society of Teachers of Family Medicine selected
Fernandina Beach physician Edward Shahady, MD, honoring
him as the national winner of the 2008 Medical
Economics Award for Innovation in Practice
Improvement. The award was given for his work in
developing the Diabetes Master Clinician Program.
Developed as a project of the FAFP Foundation, the goal
of the DMCP is to help primary care physicians and
their patients manage diabetes by implementing an
Internet-based diabetes registry and improving the quality
of care through group visits. Currently, 80 Florida
practices participate in the program, with 13,000
patients in the registry. Dr. Shahady is the medical director
of the DMCP and has more than 40 years of experience
with advising on prevention and treatment of the
disease. He is a member of the AAFP and the FAFP and
is also a past president of both the Society of Teachers of
Family Medicine and its Foundation. He continues to be
an active leader and innovator for family medicine. Dr.
Shahady received his award at the AAFP Conference on
Practice Improvement on December 6 in Savannah.
