Business Advisory Council
WANTS YOU!
Susan Somers
FM marketing, LLC
Business Advisory Council
Member Since 2006
I joined the Faith Lutheran Business Advisory
Council (BAC) initially to support the school’s
commitment to being a technology leader. There
is a sense of pride knowing that my membership
is helping the teachers and students at
Faith, whether it’s through the purchase of
digital projectors, computer cartridges or lab
materials. What I didn’t realize at the time
were the additional benefits that came with
my membership. As a BAC member, I have
access to over 40 business professionals with
whom to network. From insurance to legal
services, the BAC membership provides me
with great resources for both my business and
my personal life. I’ve made many friendships
along the way, and have even picked up some
new clients.
Since its inception in 2001, the Business
Advisory Council has helped raise almost $740,000 for Faith Lutheran.
In addition to benefits mentioned above, take a look at this long list of
perks our members enjoy:
• 8" x 10" BAC membership plaque to proudly display in your office.
• Member & Business listing in the "Crusader" newsletter, which is
mailed to over 3,800 recipients monthly.
• Member & Business listing on the FLHS website.
• Member & Business listing on the BAC wall display in Faith's
front lobby.
• Monthly BAC59 meetings - educational opportunities for
members to enhance your business.
• Complimentary invitation for member & spouse/guest to the
annual BAC Wine Tasting.
• Business promotional opportunity to be the BAC Focus of the
Month in the Crusader newsletter.
• Business networking opportunities at both the fall & spring BAC
breakfasts as well as BAC59 meetings.
• Free attendance at BAC breakfasts.
• Satisfaction of knowing you are a "Business Leader Making
an Impact Today" by helping the next generation of business
leaders achieve their goals.
In essence, the Business Advisory Council allows Faith students and
teachers to stay current in an ever-changing technological world. The
BAC helps the school to offer the best digital age education possible.
I would be honored if you would join me as a business professional
and become a member of this important team today. The membership
form is included in this newsletter. If you would like further information,
please contact the Development Office or visit Faith Lutheran’s
website at www.faithlutheranlv.org.
from the
Executive Office
As this column goes to print, the
girls’ basketball team is preparing for
the Final Four at the State Tournament.
At the highest levels of competition,
life changing lessons are learned. Win
or lose, what happens might be a defining
moment in the lives of our coaches
and players.
I had several defining moments in
my life; some of those helped clarify
my career path. One of those happened
in 8th grade. My principal wore
a second hat: 8th grade teacher. On
more than one occasion that year and
in previous years, he used the “Board
of Education,” which dauntingly hung
on the wall in his office, to discipline
me for various problems I caused with
my mouth and actions. The encounters
my posterior had with that paddle were
very much deserved.
Each spring at that same elementary
school, we had a co-ed intramural
softball league that played games for
several weeks in the mid morning.
Since we didn’t have enough softball
fields to accommodate each team each
day, several teams had a bye each day.
As the captain of my team in 8th grade,
Dr. Steven Buuck
Chief Executive Officer
Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School
buucks@flhsemail.org
❝ ...You should become a teacher and a coach.
In all of my years here, I’ve never seen a captain
use a bye day to practice with his team.
❞
I would use those off days to practice
with my team working on fielding and
hitting in the school’s paved parking
lot. I recall with great clarity the day in
late May right before I graduated when
my principal said to me in front of the
entire class, “Steve Buuck. You should
become a teacher and a coach. In all
of my years here, I’ve never seen a
captain use a bye day to practice with
his team.” This man, who had to discipline
me many times over the years,
saw something in me and encouraged
me to become a teacher, which I did.
His words were one of the defining
moments in my life as I chose education
as a career.
Jesus had several defining moments
in His earthly life. One was in the Garden
of Gethsemane hours before His
crucifixion. While praying, He said,
“Father, if you are willing, take this
cup from me; yet not my will, but yours
be done.” Jesus didn’t fear the beatings
or the spikes, but the cup of wrath
His own Father was going to pour out
upon Him. He feared the brutal punishment
He would have to face for our
sin. But He did it any way. The wrath
that deserved to be poured out against
mankind was consumed by the One
who loves us more than we can ever
know. Having swallowed the last drops,
Jesus shouted out in triumph “It is
finished!” The work had been done for
us. Despite His fear, Jesus followed
His Father’s will. During this Lenten
season, may we be humbled at His
sacrifice on our behalf. Ultimately, His
defining moment became ours.
CAFETERIA NEWS
QjkmoUbahFJKLMNOcQjkmoUbahF
The Cafeteria solicited feedback from faculty and
staff in December. We looked over the feedback,
looking for fresh ideas and trying to get an insight into
what could make the Cafeteria better. Well, the results
are in and changes have been made.
Since January, we have been serving at least 3 hot
vegetarian entrees a week. We have been making vegetarian
tacos, pasta dishes and stir frys. We have also
brought back by popular demand chocolate milk – this
has been very successful. We also changed our pizza
recipe and we have been using a whole wheat crust for
the pizza and for our fresh calzones.
We changed the packaging in our salads to make
them more user-friendly and we hope to continue with
the trend of more baked chips for sale.
A longer term goal of providing nutritional information
for the food is also a work in process and will be
achieved at the latest by the next school year.
Thank you to all who participated and please feel
free to contact me.
Douglas Braun Named 2013
LEA Distinguished Lutheran
Secondary Educator
Douglas J. Braun received the
Lutheran Education Association’s
2013 Distinguished Lutheran Secondary
Educator award. Mr. Braun, head
of sophomore theological studies and
assistant men and women’s tennis
coach, was selected for this honor by by
the LEA Secondary Educators Network
leadership team.
Mr. Braun earned a B.A. in secondary
education from Concordia University
Chicago and an M.A. in curriculum and
instruction from Colorado Christian
University. He is currently working on a Douglas J. Braun
second masters degree in theology. His
past experience includes teaching and leading many high school
subjects and activities in Lutheran high schools in Wisconsin and
Colorado. He once served as theology department chair. Outside of
school, he serves his community as president of his homeowners
association, and he volunteers every Saturday with the Bountiful
Baskets food co-op. He also serves his congregation as the preschool
board chair.
In support of Doug’s nomination, one colleague wrote, “It is
awesome to know that one of our finest instructors is teaching our
students their most important subject matter.” Students report
that Mr. Braun keeps theology class interesting and that they
constantly learn new things. In addition, Doug’s “commitment to
[the tennis] program has helped push it from relative obscurity to
one of the top programs in all of Nevada. He has also organized
a fundraiser with our students to benefit First Choice Pregnancy
Services of Nevada. Our students have raised thousands of dollars
to support … services that do not encourage abortions to women
who are pregnant.”
Commenting on his great joys as a teacher, Doug said, “I teach
in a true mission field, where [fewer] than half of my students are
churched in any form, so I get to ‘light the lamp’ for many of them.
I teach sophomores, and this is a time when they have so many
questions about God and their faith, and I love to help them work
through that, using the Scriptures to guide them.”
February was a busy, but fun
month for our Parent Teacher
Fellowship. Showing appreciation for
our children is one of the highlights
each year, because we all recognize
how hard they work and how much joy
they bring. This year, with the help of
Mrs. Katie Wiltse, the middle school
and high school each had their own
week of fun, surprises and special
treats. The highlight of the Middle
School week was performances by
A NOTE FROM PTF
their talented peers at a special
assembly. Special thanks to the
amazing Chick Band who performed
for the High School assembly … and
they will be back with their inspiring
Christian rock to entertain the Middle
School before the end of the year. We
would also like to thank Mrs. Megan
Buikema and Mrs. Cindy Seigle for
helping to organize the raffle. The
month ended with internet safety
programs for both middle and high
school students.
As we enter the final months of
the 2012 – 2013 school year, we are
looking for volunteers for next year. If
you are interested in a board position
or would like to be part of a special
events committee, please contact
Elynne Greene at egreene665@aol.
com. It is a rewarding opportunity
to work together in fellowship to
support the school and our children.
The Penny War raised $1500 for ABAN.
Students gathered food and clothing.
Lutheran Schools Week was a great success! Faith Lutheran Middle School
students came ready to compete against their opposing grades. Throughout the
week the students participated in a Penny War to raise money for ABAN. The students
competed as classes and raised a total of $1,500. Another way students
let their light shine was through the clothing and food drive on Wednesday. Over
20 large bags of clothes, along with 10 boxes of food, were taken to Safe Nest
of Las Vegas.
The dress up days
provided students a
break from their school
uniform and a chance
to get in touch with their
creative sides. The winner
of the spirit trophy
and ice cream prize for
this year was the 6 th
grade. We will look forward
to seeing if they
can retain their crown in
2014! Thanks to all who
were involved with this
great week.
