Up Close and PersonalCristen JacobsenChampagne is passionatewhen it comes to helpingchildren. This comesfrom the love of her ownfour children; daughterKelsey is a 8th grader atFaith Lutheran. Cristenleft a successful career inadvertising and marketingto put her knowledgeand perseverance to work in the nonprofitsector. She founded Hope forHearts in 2007, and manages donorrelations, communications and allfundraising activities. Along withCristenJacobsen-Champagnewith a studentBAC Focus of the MonthCristen Jacobsen ChampagneHope for HeartsHope for Hearts, Cristenestablished a charitablefoundation to benefit avariety of children’s charities, including Las VegasChildren’s HomelessClinic, Children’s HospitalLos Angeles and Children’sHospital Stanford. Cristenhas been self-employed forthe past three years, managingher own businessinvestment company. She is a proudalumna of the University of Arizona, obtaining a Bachelors of Arts degreefrom the prestigious MA Entrepreneurialprogram.Hope for HeartsUganda has over 6 million orphan children whoare homeless and living on the streets in KampalaCity, Uganda. Many are forced into prostitution, rarelyescaping the cycle of poverty that is their birthright.Thousands of miles away in suburban Las Vegas,Cristen Jacobsen-Champagne, a mother of four, campaignsfor their cause. She learned about their plightfrom a priest at her church. The priest, Father MugaggaLule, on loan from Uganda to the Catholic Diocese, hadfounded a school in Kampala City called the St. ElizabethGirls Academy (SEGA). Besides providing foodand shelter to orphan girls, SEGA offers vocationaltraining and a primary education, teaching them theskills to lead productive and independent lives. Cristen loved SEGA’s “HandUp” not “Hand Out” philosophy. Cristen rallied her family and friends to help. What started as raising a few dollars in lemonade stand sales has turned intoHope for Hearts, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit that Cristen established in 2007. To date,Hope for Hearts has raised over $500,000 for the St. Elizabeth’s Girls Academy.Donations have funded everything from food and medicine, to a new roof for theschool. Over 400 students have graduated from the academy, working in a vocationthat they learned while living at SEGA. In 2011, Cristen made the journey toUganda, visiting the St. Elizabeth’s Girls Academy to meet the girls her charityhas helped over the past five years. The rewarding experience only increasedher commitment to Hope for Hearts. Their latest campaign focuses on buildinga new campus on 40-50 acres of land. This will allow SEGA to increase accommodationfrom 200 to 1,000 girls annually.
