Modern insulation has a name<br />

The histories of the successful Swiss premium brand and that of <strong>Sager</strong> <strong>AG</strong> are closely connected up to the<br />

present. It all started in 1949 in Switzerland in the Aargau community of Dürrenäsch. The family-run company is still<br />

S<strong>AG</strong>LAN glass wool made of natural<br />

quartz sand is the optimum insulation<br />

material for construction in<br />

Minergie. S<strong>AG</strong>LAN has outstanding<br />

sound and thermal insulation properties.<br />

The S<strong>AG</strong>LAN cutting service<br />

is very valuable and covers large<br />

insulation thicknesses up to 300 mm.<br />

All products can be lined with different<br />

the ingenious insulation material<br />

There are probably only very few<br />

people that do not know the ingenious<br />

insulation material <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong>,<br />

because EPS (expanded polystyrene<br />

hard foam) is used around the world<br />

as insulation, packaging or filler<br />

material. EPS is also used in horticulture<br />

as soil improver, in landscape<br />

gardening as weight reducer for the<br />

soil and as a filler material in roads<br />

and bridges. In addition, polystyrene<br />

is used for injection moulding<br />

parts, lightweight concrete, recesses,<br />

decorations or as an admixture for<br />

recycling products.<br />

In the course of earth history,<br />

dead plant and animal matter turned<br />

into crude oil under enormous<br />

pressure. Only 4 % of the crude oil<br />

extracted worldwide is required for<br />

the production of polymers of all<br />

kinds. EPS is among these and was<br />

already discovered back in 1931 but<br />

not produced from natural organic<br />

substances until 20 years later.<br />

The groundbreaking invention<br />

was made by BASF in Ludwigshafen.<br />

In 1954, S<strong>AG</strong>ER was the first Swiss<br />

company to produce polystyrene<br />

insulation slabs by the name of<br />

<strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong>.<br />

<strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> consists of 98% air, which<br />

is trapped in 2% pure hydrocarbon –<br />

the polystyrene. 1 m 3 expanded hard<br />

polystyrene foam contains approx.<br />

3 – 6 billion microscopically small, airfilled<br />

cells.<br />

During production, the polystyrene<br />

pearls are first foamed up with<br />

steam and then bonded with each<br />

other in block shapes in a second step<br />

also using steam.<br />

The outstanding properties of<br />

<strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> soon became famous. The<br />

white, light, easy to process material<br />

with its optimal heat and cold insulation<br />

properties can be applied in<br />

many different ways and is 100%<br />

recyclable.<br />

Today, the building industry<br />

cannot do without <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong>. We produce<br />

insulation and facade slabs but<br />

also drainage slabs and 2D/3D cuts.<br />

We also produce <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> Nero, an<br />

advanced development of <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong><br />

with improved thermal insulation<br />

properties. We produce <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> in<br />

Dürrenäsch – a quality product<br />

made in Switzerland!<br />

Production<br />

Production of <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> from polystyrene<br />

Pre-foaming<br />

Raw materials attuned to the products <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong>, <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> Nero or <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> Zebra are<br />

placed in the rougher. By activating the bloating agent with steam, the raw material<br />

granulate with a grain size of approx. 1 mm is bloated to 10 times its diameter. Moe or<br />

less strong bloating decides the bulk density of the end product. The performance of<br />

the rougher is attuned to that of the block form.<br />

Block foaming<br />

Granulate from the silo, and depending on the quality, addition of approx. 15 % recycling<br />

material, this means homogeneous internal S<strong>AG</strong>ER cuts from the downstream cutting station.<br />

Block form 2: max. block dimensions 4080 x 1030 x 1280 mm (L x W x H)<br />

The block form is filled up to the top with dried granulate. By adding steam, the granulate<br />

is bonded under slight overpressure and thus turns into <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> or <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> Nero.<br />

Elastification<br />

After foaming, when the core temperature is still high enough, the raw block is<br />

plasticised, meaning the cavities in the cells are compressed. Especially facade insulation<br />

slabs are plasticised.<br />

Oscillation / cutting<br />

Via the roller belt, the individual blocks with a size of 1000 x 1000 x 500 mm reach<br />

the oscillator. The <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> is cut into slabs with hot wires. It can be melted/cut simultaneously<br />

with 50 wires oscillating.<br />

Quality assurance<br />

To meet the high quality standards of the Swiss "Bundesfachabteilung Qualitätssicherung<br />

EPS-Hartschaum (BFA QS EPS)", we constantly check the <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong> quality in<br />

our internal laboratory.<br />

Packaging<br />

Foil packaging with the wrapping machine is the last work step before the <strong>S<strong>AG</strong>EX</strong><br />

slabs reach the storage hall via a 100 m long transport belt.<br />
