Double Struck 1884-CC Silver Dollar
by Mike Byers
Major Morgan Dollar mint errors
are rare. This double struck
1884 Silver Dollar is from
the Carson City Branch Mint. Having a
combination of rarity (Morgan Dollar),
type of mint error (Double Struck) and
where it was struck (“CC” Carson City
Branch Mint) is phenomenal.
It was sold by the U.S. GSA office in
the 1970’s, when the U.S. Government
released and sold a hoard of Silver
Dollars. Although still in it’s original
GSA holder, NGC has certified and
graded it “Double Struck 1st Strike 25%
Off-Center, Mint State 63 PL.” The first
strike was 25% off-center. The second
strike was seated properly in the collar
and received a normal strike. Although
some of the original off-center strike
was obliterated, upon close examination,
much detail remains on both sides.
Major Carson City mint errors are among
the most desired and valuable U.S. errors.
