Dear Friends of Glacier Peak High School,
Nearly half of the 1640 students at GPHS travel to and from school on a school bus. That means that they arrive sometime between 7:15 AM and
7:25 AM and depart for home seven minutes after the school dismisses at 2:12 PM. These students effectively have no time to seek help from
teachers before and after school. This is why many years ago, the Snohomish Freshman Campus, followed by Snohomish High School, created
what we now call Grizzly Period. It is a time for students to get help from teachers, take make-up tests, make-up other work, work on group projects,
do homework or work with other students in a well-organized classroom environment.
Grizzly Period worked well most of the time, but two problems kept creeping up as we went through each school year. The first problem was that
some classrooms were very hard hit on test days and during make-up time with large numbers of students. The 30 students assigned to a particular
teacher would show up and then 15 more would arrive for extra help. Our rooms were not designed for 45 students at a time and many students
could not get the help that they needed. The second problem was some students (not all) were failing to use the time wisely and take responsibility
for their own learning during this valuable time. Often when students were in trouble in a class, I would ask them how they were using
Grizzly Period. Inevitably their answer was not productively.
Our solution to these two problems this year was the introduction of a learning log. This is a sheet where students will log their activity during Grizzly
Period. It allows students to go and get the extra help they need and then return to their second period with a record of their activity. Students
are responsible for logging their activity and their location and getting it signed by the teacher where they were working. This places the burden on
the student rather than the teacher, who was generating a pass and giving to the student. The log also allows students with multiple make-ups to
schedule out their Grizzly Periods within a week.
The solution for the overcrowded classrooms was to create a location where students who don’t regularly need extra help and who are already
performing at a high standard to go and work in a large group setting in the commons. We chose the standard of a semester GPA of 3.5 as the
indicator of high performance. First semester, all freshmen will remain in their normal Grizzly Period classroom. In this way we make room for
students who need extra help to get it from the selected teacher.
Hopefully these changes will have the desired effect of making Grizzly Period work as it was first designed. We want all of our students to have the
opportunity to succeed at a high level. We will evaluate the changes made to Grizzly Period throughout the first semester and determine what, of
any, changes are needed as we go into second semester in February.
Thank you for sharing your child with us.
What’s Happening at
Significant Changes Come to Parent/Teacher Conferences
Glacier Peak has traditionally had Parent/Teacher conferences on two half days, with students being dismissed at 10:30am on both
days. This year, with permission from the State of Washington, students will not be attending school on Thursday, October 25 and
Friday, October 26. Teachers will be located in their classrooms and parents will still have the opportunity to talk to their child’s
teachers about what is happening in the classroom and how their child is progressing. We try and limit each conference time to five
minutes, however parents are welcome to make an appointment with a specific teacher if they wish to have a longer discussion on a
different day. The conference schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, October 24
Evening Conferences
Students will attend school on regular schedule
7:30am—2:12pm
Start Planning For TOLO on February 2
On Saturday, February 2, from 8:00pm-11:00pm, the Grizzly Commons will come alive with the sounds of TOLO. The Glacier
Peak FFA has been hard at work designing, planning and coordinating this year’s TOLO event. Our theme this year is
the symbol of the trident and the decorations will be of ‘the sea floor.’ For those new to our GP family, the TOLO is our
‘girl ask boy’ dance. It is semi-formal, although many students choose to dress formally. It is a BIG dance with photographers,
a photo-booth, great decorations and good fun. TOLO is the main fundraiser for the FFA and helps pay for our state
convention, leadership activities, as well as many contributions back to our school in the form of grants and club project
money. Each year we give back thousands of dollars to clubs, projects and charitable organizations that help Glacier Peak
students.
Ticket prices are $20 per individual ticket and will go on sale starting Tuesday, January 15, with a new and exciting community
service opportunity: Ten Dollar Tuesday! For one day only students can get a $10 TOLO ticket with the donation of
a box of cereal. All donations will benefit the Maltby Food Bank. Ticket sales will be at the bookkeeping office and times
will be posted.
PSAT On October 17
The PSAT is the best preparation for the SAT test. All college-bound, 11 th graders and
sophomore Honor’s English students, should take the PSAT. The PSAT will be offered
during the school day, at Glacier Peak, on Wednesday October 17 th . The fee of $17.50
can be paid to the Glacier Peak bookkeeping office, by check, ONLY during the following
school day hours: 7:05am to 7:30am, during both lunches or after school on Tuesdays
from 2:12pm-2:42pm and Fridays 12:15pm-12:45pm. Testing is limited to the first 250
students so please sign up as early as possible!
Friends of FBLA
Currently a fundraiser is underway for 'Friends of FBLA '. For $2.00, your name can be put on our custom sleeves for our coffee
cart! If you are interested, contact either Mrs. Sanchez or any FBLA member. Our collection of names will end October
25. If you or your business would like to advertise on our sleeves, contact Mrs. Sanchez for further information at 360-563-
DECA is Doing a Sweet Fund Raiser
Glacier Peak DECA is holding an Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough and More fundraiser for the month of October. With the holiday
season right around the corner, this is a good time to stock up on those special treats! Please place an order with the marketing
students in room 206 or at the front desk in the main office. A tub of 36 cookies costs $16.00! We will only be taking orders
through October 22, so place your orders today. All delivery of Otis Spunkmeyer products will be the week of November 12 – 16,
right before Thanksgiving! If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Alicia Sents by email (alicia.sents@sno.wednet.edu).
Grizzly Period Gets A Face Lift
Grizzly Period is an opportunity for students to develop in the areas of academic, personal, social, or co-curricular goals in a
well-managed classroom. On Tuesday, October 2nd, we introduced two new changes to our Grizzly Period format. Students
will now have a Learning Log that will be used as a pass and a scheduling tool for Grizzly Periods. In addition to the log, students
who have met the criteria will be able to report to the Commons for Free Learning, which is an opportunity to work
with classmates on their various assignments. This pilot program will be implemented throughout first semester and will be
re-evaluated in January. Grizzly Period expectations are as follows:
• Grizzly Period begins immediately following first period on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
• Most students will go immediately to their second period classroom.
• Students may go to a class where they need extra help, to make up work or a test, to work on a project, to meet with
teachers or other students as approved by individual 2 nd period teacher.
• Students wishing to go to the Library to either use the computers or other resources must pick up a pass from the Library
prior to that day’s Grizzly Period.
• Students will be in, and remain in, the first location that they choose for Grizzly Period for the entire Grizzly Period.
• Students may not go to the bathroom, use the vending machines, visit the office or be in the hallways during Grizzly Period.
• Students not in a classroom when the bell rings to begin Grizzly Period are tardy and are subject to consequences for
being tardy.
• All students will use a Grizzly Period Log to document their location during Grizzly Period. This includes students who
choose to stay in their second period classroom.
• Students who leave their second period classroom to go to another classroom during Grizzly Period will write on the log
where they went, what they did, and then get the space on the log signed by the teacher who supervised their Grizzly
Period that day.
• Students will present their Grizzly Period Log as their ticket back into second period.
• Students with an appropriate grey log may go to the Commons for Free Learning.
Free Learning is for students with a 3.5 GPA or higher in the previous semester. These students will receive a
Grizzly Period Log with a preprinted name label on it.
This allows the student to go to Grizzly Period to receive help or to go to Free Learning in the Commons where
they can work on homework, talk quietly with friends or work on projects.
If appropriate students choose to attend Free Learning, they are expected to go to, and stay in the commons for
the entire Grizzly Period.
Students who lose their Free Learning log or misuse it in any way will be given a normal Grizzly Period Log and
will be expected to be in the appropriate classroom during Grizzly Period.
• Lost Grizzly Period Logs may be replaced by purchasing a replacement for 25 cents from the DECA store before school,
during lunch or after school.
• Students who are out of their second period class without a log, or who return to second period at the end of Grizzly Period
without a signed log will be subject to a referral for truancy from their current 2 nd period teacher. That referral could
lead to an office visit and possible detention or Friday School.
• Students found outside of the school in the parking lot or off campus will get an immediate referral that will lead to an
office visit and a Friday School.
Grizzly Girls Are Looking Good
GP Recycling Club is running a dress drive for our semi formal events. Girls will be able to
shop for dresses that have been donated to our dress store for an event. Cost for the dress
rental is $10 for the evening. If your daughter wants to view the fine selection of dresses for
the event, they are available in the girls locker room. They may also contact Rheanne Jarchow
or Mrs. Desilet.
National Honor Society
Membership in the GPHS chapter is both an honor and a privilege bestowed upon a prestigious group of juniors and seniors.
Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on the four pillars of the National Honor Society. These
pillars are outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Students who are new to our district will need to see
Mrs. Bowden for additional application information. Once selected, the members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate
these qualities. Students who qualify will be given an invitation to apply for membership by October 15th, 2012.
These must be completed and submitted to Ms. Kelli Bowden (room 310), the club advisor, by 2:30pm on October 30th, 2012.
No late applications will be accepted.
The five members of the Faculty Council use the following definitions to review the student information/ activity forms:
Scholarship: Only students who have attended Snohomish School District for the equivalent of one semester may be considered
for membership. Students who have not met this attendance qualification may submit a letter of recommendation from
the previous school’s principal. Based on the recommendation of the previous principal, the Faculty Council may waive the
semester regulation. Students must be in 11 th or 12 th grade with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. The cumulative GPA will be
an average of grade 9 through the current semester. Students will be notified of the invitation to apply in writing at least one
week prior to the application deadline.
Leadership: Students must document leadership positions they have held on their application. These may be in or out of school
leadership roles. An example of leadership is holding an office or position of responsibility in school clubs. Leadership can also
be in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities. The student who exercises leadership inspires positive
behavior in others. Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, ideacontributors,
dependable, and positive people.
Service: The student must show evidence of voluntary contributions to the school or community. Service is considered to be
those actions undertaken by the student which are done with, or on behalf of others, without any direct financial compensation
and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. As a volunteer, the student is dependable and well-organized. The
student is gladly available and willing to offer assistance.
Character: The student must manifest truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating, and illustrate unwillingness
to profit by the mistakes of others. The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative,
demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally
maintains a good and clean lifestyle.
Potential member’s records will be reviewed by their administrator and counselor. Any offenses in their records (grades 9-12)
that do not comply with the four pillars of the National Honor Society will disqualify them for membership. If you have questions,
please contact the NHS Advisor, Ms. Kelli Bowden. kelli.bowden@sno.wednet.edu or call (360) 563-7580, Room 310
Family and Consumer Sciences:
Thank you to all our local farms and farmers for partnering with GPHS’s Culinary Arts Department and for making amazing donations
again this year. Last year was our first year for our partnership and it was a huge success. We are excited to see what this
year has to offer and the amazing locally grown produce that our students will have the opportunity to work with. A BIG thank
you again to The Krause family and Swan’s Trail Farms, Bob with Bob’s Corn, Bailey Farms and Craven Family Farms. Your donations
added a depth and excitement to our lessons that can’t be matched. Thank you so much. We look forward to working with
you all again this year!
Donations: As with any class where the curriculum is ever changing, we are always looking for new/used items to supplement
the classroom. This year we are looking for apple/corer/slicers. If you have one in your cupboard or drawer that is just taking up
space please consider donating it to the Family and Consumer Sciences Dept. at GPHS—we can definitely put it to great use!!!
Also if you have a family garden with extra produce and don’t know what to do with it—please consider donating! Contact Mrs.
Mesman-Davis at jamie.mesman@snolwednet.edu to get more information.

Glacier Peak Art Hits the Everett Streets
Cathy Tanasse and two of her art students took part in the Street Tunes project in downtown Everett on August 1. Ten pianos
were made available for impromptu street concertos. The project was started three years ago to generate interest in the downtown
area. Painting a piano was a challenge that required some creative thinking and planning. In addition to piano painting, the
National Art Honor Society also participated in the Fresh Paint Art Festival on the Everett Marina on August 18th and 19th.
Tater Botz Girls Bring It Home
Congratulations to Gabi Kim, Rachel Kube, Charlotte Robinson, Isabella Wilson and Carolyn Yip for
their outstanding performance on September 29-30. Under Mr. Hayashi's direction, these four incoming
freshman and one senior participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Girls' Generation.
This was an all-girls event where over twenty high school robotics teams from Anacortes to
Tacoma gathered at Tahoma High School in Covington, WA. The TaterBotz Girls brought their large
basketball-shooting robot and competed in multiple rounds of the highly technical and sporty game
"Rebound Rumble". This challenging robotics competition that FRC calls "the Varsity Sport for the
Mind" involves computer programming, design and mechanical engineering, detailed and skilled remote
control driving abilities, rigorous offensive and defensive strategies, and teamwork. The GPHS
TaterBotz Girls performed well with a 7-3 qualifying round record, made it to the finals, and finished
second in the Final Competition of the day-long event! This is the best showing by a robotics team
at GPHS to date.
Congratulations to the FBLA Team
FBLA students were busy this last summer at Nationals in San Antonio, Texas. Grace Filipcic, Skyler Noble, Sarah Karabut and
Winter sports begin on November 12. Athletic paperwork is due to the athletic office by November 8th, since November 12 is Veterans
Day and the athletic office will be closed. As a reminder, all students must have an athletic packet for the 2012-2013 school
year on file in the Athletic Office before they can participate with our teams. Physicals are now valid for 24 months from the physician’s
signed date of the exam. However, an exam must be valid for the duration of the entire sport season in order to tryout or begin
playing a sport. Athletes must purchase an ASB card, pay an athletic participation fee and have current medical insurance. Packets
are available in the GPHS athletic office and on the GPHS website under the Athletics tab. The latest sports information can be
obtained by calling the athletic hotline at 360-563-4215.
