Extensive research background in disability issues with an emphasis on employment, psychi<strong>at</strong>ric<br />
disability, access to technology, and access to health care. Knowledge and experience in both<br />

Currently working on an extensive qualit<strong>at</strong>ive research project analyzing st<strong>at</strong>e employment<br />
systems. This project is funded through multiple federal and st<strong>at</strong>e sources as well as through the<br />
New York Medicaid Infrastructure Grant.<br />
With other team members, conducting the evalu<strong>at</strong>ion component of the ODEP-funded Start-Up<br />
New York program, an entrepreneurial training program for people with disabilities who want to<br />
start their own businesses.<br />

Conducted a pilot study for the Department of Veterans Affairs on the impact of disability sports<br />
on both employment and quality of life for veterans with service-rel<strong>at</strong>ed injuries. It included an<br />
extensive liter<strong>at</strong>ure review, in depth interviews with directors of disability sports and wilderness<br />
programs, as well as interviews with program staff and participants.
Conducted a qualit<strong>at</strong>ive study for the Department of Labor to examine the successful programs<br />
th<strong>at</strong> have been developed within federal agencies for hiring and retaining employees with<br />
disabilities. The project focused on how model programs were initially developed and<br />
implemented and how they were then improved and sustained over time. It included in-depth<br />
interviews with individuals involved in the development of these programs including program<br />
directors (current and retired), program participants, disability program managers, selective<br />
placement coordin<strong>at</strong>ors, and numerous staff.<br />
Conducted a review for the Interagency Committee on Disability Research (ICDR) of ongoing<br />
and published research on the emerging importance of demand-side research on employment and<br />
disability. This report was then used by NIDRR in their recent development of funding priorities<br />
for the next ten years.<br />
Conducted an extensive research review for the ICDR of all ongoing federally-funded research<br />
on employment and disability in order to identify current trends and innov<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Worked on a qualit<strong>at</strong>ive focus group study for the Federal Highway Administr<strong>at</strong>ion (FHWA) to<br />
assess the corpor<strong>at</strong>e culture <strong>at</strong> this agency for employees with disabilities. The final report<br />
included recommend<strong>at</strong>ions for improving practices with regard to hiring, retention, and career<br />
development.<br />

Recently completed a focus group study for ICDR on issues faced by people with disabilities<br />
regarding the use of technologies and emergency preparedness. As part of a four-person team,<br />
conducted 12 focus groups involving 122 participants with disabilities in ten st<strong>at</strong>es and one U.S.<br />
territory and. Used NVivo software to sort and analyze the focus group transcripts; authored the<br />
final report.<br />
Principal Investig<strong>at</strong>or on a NIDRR-funded three-year field initi<strong>at</strong>ed research qualit<strong>at</strong>ive study<br />
focusing on the str<strong>at</strong>egies people with psychi<strong>at</strong>ric disabilities use to maintain employment and<br />
build careers. This project built on a previous NIDRR-funded three-year study regarding<br />
barriers to employment for people with psychi<strong>at</strong>ric disabilities.<br />
Team member on a qualit<strong>at</strong>ive study on the barriers people with disabilities face in obtaining<br />
primary care. Collabor<strong>at</strong>ing with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, worked on study<br />
design, conducted focus groups, and completed d<strong>at</strong>a analysis.<br />
Completed d<strong>at</strong>a analysis on three separ<strong>at</strong>e year-long Web site surveys funded by the ICDR.<br />
Conducted a similar Web site survey on people’s experiences with the American’s with<br />
Disabilities Act (ADA) for the N<strong>at</strong>ional Network of ADA and IT Technical Assistance Centers.<br />
Worked on an evalu<strong>at</strong>ion of the Independent Living Centers program in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with<br />
West<strong>at</strong> for the Rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion Services Administr<strong>at</strong>ion, analyzing and interpreting survey and<br />
qualit<strong>at</strong>ive d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

The Women’s Center, Vienna, VA, Clinical Psychology Extern 1997 – 1998<br />
Worked as a therapist with individuals, couples, children, and families <strong>at</strong> this non-profit<br />
counseling center. Also co-facilit<strong>at</strong>ed a weekly e<strong>at</strong>ing disorders group, administered<br />
psychological assessment b<strong>at</strong>teries to clients for diagnostic purposes, and wrote comprehensive<br />
psychological reports.<br />
Marin Services for Women, Larkspur, CA and Bethany Center, Honesdale, PA,<br />
Consultant and Addictions Counselor, 1989 – 1995<br />
Designed and delivered an ongoing six-part workshop series on family issues rel<strong>at</strong>ed to chemical<br />
dependency for residents and their family members. Developed and facilit<strong>at</strong>ed an ongoing<br />
weekly parenting support group for young recovering single mothers. Duties also included<br />
individual counseling and group therapy in both the inp<strong>at</strong>ient and outp<strong>at</strong>ient programs as well as<br />
a weekly aftercare group.<br />
Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc., Atlanta, GA, Editor of the Portrait of America Study<br />
Guides, 1983 – 1984<br />
Edited a series of teaching manuals to be used by elementary, middle school, and high school<br />
teachers. Hired a team of ten writers, three copy editors, and two typesetters, completing ten<br />
books within nine months. This series sold n<strong>at</strong>ionally to school systems in conjunction with the<br />
award-winning 55 hour TBS documentary series, Portrait of America.<br />
