Enhancing sustainability and well-being in
residential and urban spaces
Enhancing sustainability and well-being in
residential and urban spaces
Today’s urban planner faces
lighting demands undreamt
of even a decade ago. It is
no longer sufficient to provide
orientation with security after
dark. It is not even enough to
create an ambience that gives
a sense of well-being. We need
to deliver all these, but in an
environmentally friendly manner.
Stricter rules are being applied to
product design, use and disposal.
Older technologies are being
outlawed and obtrusive light
regulations tightened. We have
to minimise the carbon footprint
of a product and maximise
sustainability.
Clearly, a new creative approach
was needed; now it has arrived.
Plurio presents a portfolio of
decorative post-top lanterns and
columns which factor in:
Simple and friendly design
Their clean lines, colour and
contours, blend harmoniously
with most urban landscapes.
There are four styles, as shown
below. In each there are choices
of bowls, optics and optical
accessories, and in Plurio
Original there is the additional
option of bi-coloured canopies.
Well being and lighting
performance
The universal shapes, combined
with an innovative high
performance optical system,
create a sense of space, safety
and well-being. There is a choice
of lamp types, including ‘white
light’ options, to suit differing
applications.
Environmental Integrity
The use of environmentally
sound materials; the design of
the lantern and its optics; and
the volume optimisation of the
packaging ensures that Plurio
provides minimal obtrusive light
nuisance, sustainable energy
savings and thus valuable
reductions in CO 2
emissions.
Low cost of ownership
Designed from concept stage to
be easy to install and maintain,
the Plurio range represents
excellent value for money.
Complete poles and
brackets packages
Co-ordinated poles and brackets,
Performance, Efficiency and Comfort (PEC) – for a
better lit environment
Plurio evokes the spirit of Thorn Lighting’s dynamic, results-orientated
PEC programme
The programme is based on
the principle that Performance,
Efficiency and Comfort determine
the effectiveness of lighting, its
impact on the people using it,
and its impact on the natural
environment. Plurio delivers the
right light on the right place at the
right time.
Performance: Providing the
best visual effectiveness
• Outstanding level of
illuminance, control and
uniformity of light = good
quality of light
• Excellent spacing between
lanterns
• No Glare
• Good colour rendering
Efficiency: Conserving energy
and effort, reducing CO 2
emissions and waste, providing
lighting that is practical and
efficient to install, operate and
Effective, efficient and comfortable light
Innovative high performance optical system engineered for improved
visibility, reduced glare and control of obtrusive light
Optical principle
• Internal facetted rotational
optic enhances downward
light, whilst controlling the
light distribution, for excellent
uniformity of illuminance,
no shadow effect at base of
column
• Oriented facets on the optic
avoids occulting, whereby the
central column can conceal
luminous rays from the lamp
• Clear polycarbonate bowl with
low angle prisms eradicates
glare
• Conforming to the European
Standard EN13201,
Plurio meets the class G5
corresponding to a full
horizontal cut off preventing
upward light and even the most
stringent class G6 with the
ULOR 0% accessory.
• Additional accessories (ULOR0,
lamp cowl and lampshield) for
increased control of glare and
reduced obtrusive light
No sky glow
For highly sensitive areas, where
absolute control of obtrusive
light is required, a ULOR 0%
accessory is available
• ULOR = 0% (< 0.49cd/1000 lm):
Plurio ULOR 0 version (facetted
optic + black socket cover)
• ULOR < 1%: Plurio with
facetted or white optic
• ULOR < 4%: Plurio Effect
• Obtrusive light control: ULOR in
line with E2* projects compliance
as a standard (E1 projects with
ULOR 0% accessory)
*Environmental zones are stated by EN12193 and
the CIE ‘Guide on the Limitation of the Effects of
Obtrusive Light from Outdoor Lighting Installation’.
These range from intrinsically dark areas such as
national parks (E1) to bright inner city areas (E4).
The lower the number the more restricted the intensity
of light and recommended lighting level. Plurio has
been designed as standard to meet the ULR
requirements in term of E2 (low district brightness
areas e.g. rural or small villages) and with the ULOR
0% accessory, the more stringent E1.
No light trespass
An easy to fit integral 120°
lampshield provides a cut-off
suitable for residential areas and
certain public spaces. Available
as an accessory.
Photometric performance
• LOR* up to 70%
No glare
• Intensity peak: 200 cd/1000lm at 65° angle
The bowl is cleverly designed
with prisms to prevent glare
at 70° angle. If further visual
comfort is required, a ‘cowl’
accessory can easily be fitted to
shield the lamp from direct view.
Sustainability
Plurio in action: fast payback – and better lighting too
Up to 72.5% energy savings!
Sustainability
Electric lighting in urban areas has a major impact on sustainability.
The key to sustainability in lighting is eco-design, efficient operation
and planned recycling at the end of the product life.
Renovation project
Eco-design
Thorn employs life cycle assessments, as per the Energy-using Products
Directive (EuP), to check the environmental impact of its products
through life. This ensures that care is taken during design to employ,
absolutely, the minimum amount of restricted hazardous substances –
Plurio complies with the RoHS Directive – and that the minimum amount
of virgin materials, water and energy are used during manufacture.
Finally, Plurio’s light distribution is designed to reduce obtrusive light
and sky glow according to CIE 150 recommendations.
Efficient operation
The generation of electrical energy required for lighting is a major
contributor to CO 2
emissions. For every kWh of energy 0.42 kg of CO 2
is liberated and added to the ‘greenhouse’ gases in the atmosphere,
increasing global warming.
The most energy consumption by the product is clearly during
operation, which can be influenced by prudent design and component
selection. For Plurio the key elements are high performance optics
employing modern light sources (no mercury types), electronic gear,
power reduction dimming devices and the option of mini photocells
(with 76mm versions).
With efficient products, correct lighting scheme design and the use
of control systems substantial energy saving can be made without
jeopardising the quality of the required lighting condition.
Recycling
Plurio has a high aluminium content and is designed for disassembly
and dematerialisation and, as with all Thorn products, meets the
obligations of the WEEE waste directive.
Type of application: Open pedestrian area (e.g piazza) – refurbishment.
Existing opal sphere replaced by Plurio with facetted optic.
Spacings: 18m.
Height of light source: 4m.
Maintenance factor at installation =1.
Sky glow contribution factor
(UFR = UpwardFlux Ratio) S2 (10 lux avgrequirements):
• No light: UFR = 0
• ‘Ideal’luminaire: UFR = 1
• Plurio: UFR = 1.8
• Globe: UFR = 18
For the same lighting level on the ground, the opal bowl scatters
10 times more light into the sky than Plurio (calculation takes into
account the light directly emitted by the luminaire and also reflected
on the ground with global reflection factor of 0.15). With an ULOR
0% accessory the upward flux for Plurio would be 0%.
Proposal 1: Plurio 57W TC-TEL
Plurio 57W TC-TEL provides 45% more light on average than Sphere
125W HME while consuming 54% less energy.
Proposal 2: Plurio 70W HSE (5900 lm) with power
reduction to 50W
When more light is required at the beginning of the night, Plurio 70W
HSE lights twice as much as the Sphere125W HME, while saving 44%
energy.
When less light is required later in the night, the bi powered option
will allow you to switch to 50W, achieving then an equivalent level of
illuminance as before while saving 60% energy consumption!
Compared with other basic decorative lanterns with louvre for example,
you would need to use at least a100W discharge lamp to match the
level of illuminance given by the Plurio with a 70W lamp.
The data for an S2 project clearly shows that for the same illuminance
(10 lx, avg required) one Plurio lantern can replace two opal globe
lanterns. For a new lighting project, for instance a pedestrian open
zone as described on the former page, wider spacings between the
clutter in the public spaces, whilst retaining uniformity and illumination
