THE FORTNIGHTLY FELIX 

24th Edition

We are pleased and proud to announce that this year has been a record year for our 

SATS results. The results are a true reflection of the efforts made by our Year 6 pupils, 

with the support, guidance and excellent teaching provided by our staff. 

The Government expects the ‘average child’ to reach Level 4 in English and Maths by 

the end of Year 6. The percentage of pupils gaining Level 4 in both English and Maths 

was an outstanding 83%, a 20% increase on last year’s figures. 

Of course, not all children learn at the same rate, but it is expected that the average 

child will gain 2 levels progress between the end of KS1 and the end of KS2. Our 

figures show that 78% of our pupils have gained the expected 2 levels progress in 

English, and 81% for Maths. 

Our reading figures were also most encouraging; 85% of pupils reached Level 4 or 

above, with 44% achieving Level 5. This is significantly above the national target level 

for pupils in Year 6. Year 6 pupils achieved a record writing score of 82% Level 4 and 

above, with 30% achieving Level 5, and in Maths 91% attained Level 4 or above. 

Our Year 6 children are now in the best possible position to move up to KS3, secure in 

their skills and ready to meet the challenges that the next level of their education will 

demand. 

The end of term is now nearly upon us, and as you will see within the pages of this 

newsletter, so much is happening at St Felix. Sports Day was a huge success, blessed 

with glorious sunshine, giving the perfect conditions for record breaking. Enrichment 

activities continue offering great variety to the learning experience we provide for our 

pupils.

On Wednesday 29th June, Mr Tracey and Miss Bowers took a small group of 

Year 8 pupils to Wimbledon. It was men’s quarter finals day! An enjoyable time 

was had by all, watching some amazing tennis matches, including the men’s 

doubles quarter final. The weather was glorious which helped to make the day a 

huge success.

Handbell Players 

The Year 5 and 6 Handbell players went to Northgate Lodge in 

Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 6 th July to entertain the senior 

citizens who live there. The children brought along other 

instruments to play and they particularly enjoyed talking to the 

residents during the afternoon. It was lovely to be invited back to 

play and the children did St Felix proud.

Pantastix! 

The Year 8 Steel Band were invited to play at Exning Primary School’s 

annual barbeque on Friday 1st July. It was their first performance of the 

summer season and they played extremely well. 

We also enjoyed helping some younger children have a go on the steel 

pans. Thank you to the families who came along to watch – the staff at 

Exning were impressed with the quality of music and attitude of the 

children. 

We are looking forward to a performance at Great Bradley Church Fete this 

Sunday 10 th July. Well done everyone!

SPORTS DAY 2011 

On Monday 4th July our school Sports Day took place. It was a glorious day and the pupils 

were watched by many parents, some of whom also took part in the parents’ race, making a 

very impressive effort! There were 7 ladies and 8 men taking part, congratulations to you 

all. 

Incredibly, a total of 72 records were broken on the day, some of which had been held for 

several years. 

The presentations were made by Paul Sullivan, Senior Commercial Manager for Lloyds 

Bank, who are sponsors for National School Sport Week.

Year 6 trip to Darley Stud 

Mr Sadler and I took thirty Year 6 children to Dalham Hall 

Stud in Newmarket on Friday 24 th June. Darley is HH 

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s global 

breeding operation which currently stands stallions in six 

countries around the world. Its headquarters are at Dalham 

Hall Stud, located within the historic home of racing, 

Newmarket. 

We took a tour of the stud and met several of the breeding 

stallions, including Dubawi, arguably one of the most 

talented young stallions in the world and a son of one of the 

most famous stallions to stand at Dalham Hall - Dubai 

Millennium. Born on the stud and trained in Newmarket, he 

won the Dubai World Cup and was the sensational 

eight-length winner of the Prince Of Wales’ Stakes at Royal 

Ascot . Standing alongside Dubawi is the 2008 Derby 

winner New Approach, who was also the undefeated 

Champion juvenile of his year. He joins another 

outstanding Derby winner, Authorized. 

We were also taken to meet the breeding mares and their 

beautiful foals – who were all very friendly! A lovely lunch 

was provided by Darley and we all tucked in to pizza and 

chips!

Go Motorsport Day 

Richard Egger from Go Motorsport came into school on Monday 20 th June 

to work with our Year 8. 

Richard is an active competitor with a history stretching back to 1969. He 

has organised road rallies, autotests, autocross, autosolos, speedcross, 

sprints, car trials, sporting trials and stage rallies, as well as being a core 

member of one of the regions more active car clubs. In between this he 

competes on about 25 events per year as well as preparing his own cars. 

Richard also runs a successful “disabled drivers into motorsport” 

programme. On all of these activities he is joined by Pat Egger, his 

co-driver on rallies and fellow driver on other events. 

Richard bought his rally car into school where he spent his workshops 

looking at the features of the car, similarities and differences between 

normal cars and safety features. To follow up from this, Year 8s then 

developed their own safety “roll” cages using only six art straws! The best 

designs belonged to Janine Morse, Jordan Sharpe, Izzy March and 

Shannon Marvell. Well done to them! 

Children also investigated career pathways within the motor industry, 

discovering that it’s not just about driving and mechanics and not just for 

boys! 

We looked at sport and nutrition, discovering that Formula 1 drivers are as 

strong and fit as some Olympic athletes. Mr. Kirby, from Newmarket 

College looked at sport and Nutrition, finding out about different food 

groups and how they affect sporting performance. We also tasted different 

pasta salads, looking at their nutritional value and taste. 

Richard sent us this email...... “Can I thank you and your colleagues for 

looking after me today. I enjoyed myself and from where I saw it the 

students were interested. What I said at the end about them being up there 

with the best I have worked with was seriously meant. I do a lot of 

schools, and all four groups stayed engaged for the full 50 minutes. “ 

Well done Year 8!

delivered the sport and nutrition workshops.

Year 7 Geography Day at Newmarket College 

The whole of Year 7 took part in a Geography Day at 

Newmarket College on Tuesday 5 th July. This is an annual event and 

staff in the Geography Department at the College were particularly 

impressed by the standard of work produced by our pupils this year! 

We took part in a “quality of life” survey to assess how life in 

Newmarket is for different groups of people. We surveyed the 

environmental quality, traffic, housing, access, leisure and shopping. 

My group took part in the access survey where we looked at how 

difficult life can be for people who are less mobile. The children 

found out how difficult it is to cross a busy road in a wheelchair and 

how some shops don’t provide disabled access at all. We also saw 

how some services go out of their way to provide help – betting 

shops particularly!! 

In our groups we had to produce a poster summarising what we had 

found out. We used this information in the afternoon to divide into 

other groups working as experts in our field, showing different 

groups of people how they could have a more sustainable future in 

Newmarket. 

We followed up our research by presenting our findings to the other 

groups in the Hall. 

I was particularly impressed with the different skills that the 

children were able to bring to the day; leadership, data 

analysis, accuracy in data handling and public speaking. Well done 

Year 7 - you were a real credit to our school!
