First, the student needs to be aware of 

the relationship between their switch 

press and the result. Some grasp this 

immediately; others need lots of practice 

with a variety of switch activities. 

Learning to press the switch at the right time 

is a very big step. It requires the motor and 

cognitive skills to operate the switch and an 

understanding of the task. Lots of software 

helps teach this skill. 

The next stage of switching is selecting 

required items. This involves a scanning 

process controlled by one or two switches. 

This skill enables access to a wider range

Why use a touchscreen 

Pointing at something you want is a 

natural way to communicate. Young 

children often point accurately and with 

understanding long before they can react 

in other ways. 

Bright, noisy computer programs can 

provide the stimulus needed by children 

and people with special needs. However, 

a mouse may require too much motor 

skill and switches may be too indirect. 

Touchscreens operate with standard 

mouse operated programs and provide 

the most direct input method of all. The 

user watches the screen and uses it as an

Using your touchscreen 

All too often learners, especially younger 

ones, sit at computers that are incorrectly 

positioned. Their wheelchair may not
