Vision is all about thinking of the future – and it can deliver very exciting ideas. One such idea
is the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept. With this prototype, BMW engineers and designers
have developed an information-based connection between driver, vehicle and the outside
world. It sets new standards for the car as an integrated component of our networked lives.
The BMW Vision ConnectedDrive is a visionary roadster with dynamic lines that draw the eye
from the distinctive front, over the long bonnet and then to an extraordinary synthesis of exterior
and interior. The interior is divided into areas that represent a BMW ConnectedDrive theme –
Convenience, Infotainment and Safety. Accompanying functions, as well as controls, are
highlighted with coloured lights, through which the information pulsates.
The vehicle also has three ultra-modern screens: a Head-Up Display, a programmable
combination instrument and the Passenger Information Display, which can be operated by
the front passenger via a conductive fabric layer. Through internet access and Augmented
Reality, the monitors offer many possibilities for interaction with the outside world. An
example: the front passenger receives tips on current local events on-screen and en route.
With one hand movement, details can be forwarded to the driver, tickets can be bought and
navigation to the venue can be activated. You can then drive to your next destination – and
into the future. More information on this concept vehicle and further research projects can
be found in the new Future Lab of BMW ConnectedDrive.

Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go Function
RELAXED AND ASSURED DRIVING.
In traffi c, it’s best to keep a safe distance from other vehicles. With active cruise control, radar
sensors measure the distance to the vehicle ahead. Even when visibility is poor – for example
when it is raining, or there is heavy fog. And thanks to the innovative Stop&Go function with
collision warning the system keeps you safe in tailbacks or slow-moving traffi c, without you
having to do anything. The system automatically detects the speed of the vehicle ahead and
maintains a safe distance. This makes long drives through heavy traffi c more relaxing and
minimises the risk of rear-end collisions.

• In dense traffi c, the vehicle’s speed is reduced as appropriate, to the point of stopping,

Driver’s profi le
SETTINGS
THAT MAKE EACH BMW YOUR BMW.
Everyone is different. As demonstrated by your preferred in-vehicle settings such as seat position
or radio confi guration. The set-up isn’t only confi ned to your BMW, though. The Driver’s profi le
option allows you to transfer individual settings to another BMW. It’s ideal, for instance, if you
share the vehicle within your family.
Up to settings such as mirror and seat position, assistance systems or contact details can be
stored and transferred easily via a USB stick. So your BMW remains as individual as you are.
All driver profi les can be transferred to other
vehicles via a USB stick.

Speed Limit Info displays speed limits on the
instrument panel or the optional Head-Up
Display.
It’s all too easy to drive too quickly, usually inadvertently. So it’s good that your BMW can now
recognise speed limits and remind you when the permitted speed has been exceeded. On
request, Speed Limit Info displays current speed limits on the instrument panel or the optional
Head-Up Display.
Most of us have experienced it. You’re standing by the luggage compartment, laden with bags
and no free hands to search for the key and open it. The optional Comfort Access function
makes this a thing of the past because it enables contact-free opening of the boot when the
remote control is in your pocket.
No free hand No problem. With Comfort
Access, you can open the tailgate without
even touching it.
The system operates via a small camera that constantly records traffi c signs on the roadside
as well as variable speed limit signs. Together with the information already supplied by the
navigation system, it ensures a reliable display of the speed limit even where there are no road
signs. Additional warnings such as “when wet” are also recognised and displayed to the driver
where relevant. Speed Limit Info always puts you in the picture. No matter how fast you are
driving.
A sensor in the rear bumper of your BMW reacts to a quick, targeted motion of your foot beneath
the boot, which then opens automatically. So you no longer need to put down your luggage –
and loading up is easy.

Surround View
SWAP THE VIEW OVER YOUR SHOULDER
FOR AN OVERVIEW.
Intuitive instructions on the Control Display.
The Park Assist fi nds parking spots and parks the car for you. Vehicle sensors determine
whether a parking place is big enough for your car. You take your hands off the steering wheel
and only operate the accelerator and brake. Every steering movement is controlled by this
innovative assistance system – until your BMW is perfectly parked in the gap. Acoustic and
visual indications of the Park Distance Control (PDC) provide additional support. The ultrasound
sensors are located on the vehicle’s sides. Parking and manoeuvring in confi ned spaces made
easy. The Park Distance Control at the front and rear takes ultrasound measurements of the
distance to any obstacles, shows them visually on the Control Display and gives you an acoustic
warning.
You may not have eyes in the back of your head. But that doesn’t mean your vision should be
limited. The Surround View option displays a bird’s-eye view of the area around your BMW on the
Control Display. Pictures are delivered by two cameras in the side mirrors, two side-view cameras
in the front wheel arches and a rear reversing camera, which together create a -degree view
around your BMW.
Above all, in areas where it is diffi cult to see, Surround View improves your view signifi cantly and
manoeuvring becomes noticeably easier. In short – one view becomes an overview.

Communication is the basis for professional success – but only if the right connections are in
place. Bluetooth Offi ce transforms your BMW on request into a mobile offi ce. The service
transfers the most important functions on your smart phone via the Bluetooth interface to your
vehicle where they are displayed on the Control Display. It could be notes, tasks, contacts,
appointments or email – you can even have email read to you.
You don’t even need to pick up your smart phone to use these functions because Bluetooth
Offi ce enables you to securely operate the device as you drive via the iDrive Controller. You
no longer lose sight of your network and communication on the road. Information on mobile

Bluetooth Audio Streaming

Tastes vary, and music is no exception. That’s why the optional Bluetooth interface and Bluetooth
Audio Streaming feature allow you to play your favourite tracks from your MP player or smart
phone through your BMW music system – and all wireless via Bluetooth.
Bluetooth Audio Streaming makes it easy to operate your MP player or smart phone via the iDrive
Controller as you drive. So it is not just the music that ensures relaxation, but also the way you

Bluetooth Audio Streaming enables wireless
playback of audio fi les.
Lots of people associate music not only with memories but also with images. That’s why the
optional USB interface with Album Cover Display feature shows the album cover of the track
being played on your vehicle’s Control Display. Songs, therefore, can be assigned more quickly
to an album or artist.
Simply connect your MP player or smart phone to your vehicle’s USB port. Your Control Display
will then automatically display the cover of the track being played. If you have an Apple iPod or an
iPhone, no adapter is required because the accompanying USB connecting cable is all you need.
With Album Cover Display you not only have music in your ears, but also on view.
Using a device becomes habit with time. Especially when it is as user-friendly as the iPhone.
You never want to change to another system again. Thanks to the optional Apps and the PlugIn
features, it’s easy to use iPod functions via the Control Display with the same trusted display as
the iPhone’s – and the familiar menu items and extended audio player functions. This function,
based on the Apple iPod Out, is a milestone of mobile integration and will be extended in the
near future.
Video Playback is making it possible to watch videos and podcasts via the Control Display. It
means you will be more impressively entertained on the road than ever before. Simply connect
your iPhone to the charger point for easy operation via the BMW iDrive system.

Applications can enrich everyday life. And now they can do it in your BMW. With the optional
equipment Apps, an iPhone and the ‘BMW Connected’ application, you can use the most varied
functions. The iDrive system, for example, allows you to select from web radio stations around
the world or display the latest status reports from your Facebook or Twitter accounts on the
Control Display. So no more boredom listening to the radio – and you stay constantly connected
to your friends.
All you need to do is to install the ‘BMW Connected’ app from the Apple App Store on your
iPhone and then connect the device to the vehicle. So you can operate all the functions safely
and comfortably via the iDrive Controller. BMW Connected – now nothing stands in the way
of the best mobile entertainment.
Internet
ON THE ROAD,
ON THE NET.
The more you use the internet, the more you don’t want to be without it – particularly when
you are travelling. The Internet option (via a compatible mobile phone that supports Bluetooth
tethering) now makes it very easy to get online in your BMW. The Control Display shows sites in
high resolution while you navigate the web with the iDrive Controller when the vehicle is stationary.
Thanks to the optional Entertainment System in the rear, your passengers can even surf while you
drive, so you don’t have to miss anything. Ultimately, you get the best of both worlds – the digital

High-Beam Assist & Lane Departure Warning
STAY ON COURSE – WITH THE HELP OF
YOUR BMW.
The High-Beam Assist automatically switches the high-beam on and off when driving at night.
In this way, you can focus on what really matters: the road ahead. The integrated automatic driving
lights control will switch on the low beam automatically at dusk or in tunnels – for added safety.
Safe and assured long-distance driving: the Lane departure Warning system notices when you
are in danger of inadvertently straying outside your lane, and warns you using a subtle steering
wheel vibration. This reduces the risk of an accident – especially in situations that require full
concentration. The Lane Departure Warning is automatically deactivated when you have signalled
your intention to change lanes using the indicator, or are travelling at speeds below km/h. This
system makes sure that you are always in the right lane.
BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot
SAFELY THROUGH THE NIGHT.
WITH INFRARED TECHNOLOGY.
All cats appear grey at night so they are scarcely recognisable on the roads. The same applies to
pedestrians, cyclists and startled wildlife. This is why the optional BMW Night Vision brings them
into focus on your Control Display. The system uses an infrared camera in the grille which captures
objects emitting warmth. It then analyses video data and works out – on the basis of your position,
steering wheel angle and speed – whether what it has seen is in a collision area.
Pedestrian Recognition gives a visual warning to indicate if people up to metres ahead are
getting close to the road. In critical situations, the new Acute Warning emits a visual and acoustic
signal for even greater safety. Pedestrians who activate a warning are also illuminated by two
high-performance LED light spots (Dynamic Light Spot) without being dazzled. This helps drivers
to see pedestrians early and react appropriately. With BMW Night Vision you are always in the
picture. Even at night.

HIGH-FUNCTION STYLE.
All important driving information, for example
the next exit road, is projected directly into the
fi eld of view.
Drivers can concentrate fully on the road.
A glance at the speedometer takes longer than you think. At km/h, it adds up to a dangerously
long metres. BMW’s optional Head-Up Display is the answer. It transmits important driving
information, such as your speed, speed limits or navigation indicators, directly into your fi eld
of view. In addition, warnings from BMW Night Vision’s thermal camera – for example, about
pedestrians posing a collision risk – are also displayed so you no longer have to avert your eyes
from the road.
Information is easily seen in high-contrast and colourful images on the windscreen. It all appears
at an approximate two-metre distance at the end of the bonnet and is highly visible in all light
conditions. This ensures greater safety at all times.
The new multifunctional instrument display option is all about focusing on the essentials.
Each of its three adjustable programmes, Comfort, ECO PRO and Sport, has their own visual
appearance in the instrument display and, in this way, continues the long BMW tradition of
optimum driver orientation. The displays give drivers attractive, intuitive and therefore fast
access to the information shown.
In Comfort mode (standard display), for instance, current speed is not only indicated by the
needle, but fi gures are also simultaneously enlarged with a magnifying glass effect. In ECO PRO
mode, the new display is fully geared to optimising fuel consumption with parts of the speedometer
and the rev counter lighting up in a soft blue. Finally, in Sport mode, the display illuminates in a
puristic orange-red and data relevant to sporty driving are the main focus.
ECO PRO mode: in addition to the optimised
displays in Comfort mode, the rev counter also
becomes an effi ciency indicator.
Comfort mode: the instrument displays feature a
new design and highlight essential information.

The system monitors the distance to vehicles
in front and, where necessary, initiates braking.
Collision Warning with Brake Activation
REACHING DESTINATIONS
AT THE SAFEST DISTANCE.
Sometimes close becomes dangerously close. It can happen, for instance, if you are momentarily
distracted and the driver in front brakes sharply. The optional Collision Warning with Brake
Activation supports you in such cases. Radar beams constantly scan the road and the car in
front. If the other vehicle brakes hard, an optical warning sounds. This is followed by an acoustic
warning.
If you still do not react, the system triggers the brake activation procedure. Collision Warning with
Brake Activation is a component of Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. If you wish, the
function can be deactivated at any time.
Side View
DRIVE WITH FORESIGHT
AROUND THE CORNER.
See what cannot actually be seen, thanks to the optional Side View. Two cameras in the front
right and left wheel arches transmit the traffi c situation next to your vehicle to the Control Display.
Yellow lines indicate how far your BMW has already entered a blind crossing or exit.
This means you can recognise approaching cross-traffi c in good time and react accordingly,
and the risk of collision is signifi cantly reduced. Side View automatically switches off at speeds
of more than km/h. So you can look ahead without distraction.
