The Information Technology <strong>Services</strong> Office (ITS) provides central IT<br />
facilities <strong>and</strong> services to support the University’s learning, teaching, research,<br />
administration <strong>and</strong> communication.<br />
IT <strong>Facilities</strong> for Students<br />
All full-time <strong>and</strong> part-time students of the University can have access to a<br />
full range of central IT facilities <strong>and</strong> services on campus. These include<br />
the University’s central computer systems, campus e-mail system,<br />
University Portal, dial-up facility, web-based learning services, Internet<br />

Student Computer Centre on Campus<br />
SU<br />
The Central Student Computer Centre (SCC) is set up on campus for walkin<br />
use by students as well as pre-scheduled classes. You can access the full<br />
range of central IT facilities through the networked PCs in the SCC.

Network outlets <strong>and</strong> wireless access points are available in all the lecture<br />
theatres <strong>and</strong> at convenient public areas around campus so that you can<br />
connect your notebook any time to access the central IT facilities.<br />
User Help Centre <strong>and</strong> Hotline <strong>Services</strong><br />
You can seek advice <strong>and</strong> assistance related to the use of IT facilities <strong>and</strong><br />
services including enquiries on your NetID from the consultants at the ITS<br />
Help Centre/Hotline. You can visit the ITS Help Centre at M201 of the Li<br />
Ka Shing Tower in person or call the ITS Hotline 2766 5900. You can also<br />
send in your request on the Web <strong>and</strong> track its progress through the Help<br />

Information <strong>Services</strong><br />
The Student H<strong>and</strong>book on IT <strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Services</strong> is a comprehensive<br />
guide helping you to fully utilise IT services during your study in the<br />
University. Latest information on new IT facilities <strong>and</strong> services is<br />
communicated to you through the monthly ITS Newsletter – “Get<br />
Connected” <strong>and</strong> via the University Portal. The University strongly advocates<br />
the use of electronic communication <strong>and</strong> all ITS publications <strong>and</strong><br />
announcements are distributed electronically. You can access it round the<br />
clock anywhere by browsing the ITS Website, the University Portal <strong>and</strong><br />
your <strong>PolyU</strong> web e-mail account.<br />

Pao Yue-kong Library<br />
The Pao Yue-kong Library is a six-storey, purpose-designed building with<br />
an area of 16,674 square metres, providing around 3,500 reader places.<br />
The attractive library environment is air-conditioned, carpeted <strong>and</strong> has an<br />
acoustic ceiling to minimise noise.<br />
The Collections<br />
The Library comprises one of the largest collections of scientific,<br />
engineering <strong>and</strong> business materials in East Asia. Other areas of strength<br />
are information technology, computing, nursing, textiles <strong>and</strong> design. The<br />
present collection exceeds 1.8 million items, to which more than 40,000<br />
volumes are added annually. Over 7,900 active print serial titles are held<br />

in the Library. The Library also provides Internet access to over<br />
32,300 unique full-text electronic journal titles <strong>and</strong> 10,500 electronic books.<br />

Online <strong>Access</strong> to Information<br />
The Library operates an integrated computerised system (INNOPAC) <strong>and</strong><br />
its Library Catalogue is accessible within the Library Building, campuswide<br />
<strong>and</strong> also remotely from your home. Up-to-date information on library<br />
services <strong>and</strong> opening hours can be accessed via the Library home page.<br />
Other services such as book reservations, checking of loan records, book<br />
ordering recommendations <strong>and</strong> suggestions on library matters can also be<br />
made via the Library home page.<br />
The Library is also networked with other universities <strong>and</strong> colleges in Hong<br />
Kong <strong>and</strong> overseas via the Hong Kong Academic Research Network<br />
(HARNET) <strong>and</strong> Internet respectively.<br />
Electronic Resources<br />
Provision of electronic information is a priority of the Library. A multitude<br />
of electronic resources including electronic books, st<strong>and</strong>ards, newspaper<br />
databases, reference tools <strong>and</strong> electronic journals can be accessed via<br />
the Library home page. Abstract <strong>and</strong> full-text databases such as the Web of<br />
Knowledge databases, INSPEC, Chemical Abstracts (SciFinder Scholar),<br />
ProQuest databases, nursing collections of the Journals@Ovid, <strong>and</strong><br />
LexisNexis Academic are included. <strong>Access</strong> to electronic journal gateways<br />
from prominent publishers is also available. A few examples are:<br />
ScienceDirect, Wiley-Interscience, Emerald Fulltext <strong>and</strong> IOP Electronic<br />
journals. Electronic images <strong>and</strong> videos on dem<strong>and</strong> are also available on<br />
the Library home page. Most electronic resources can be accessed away<br />

Online information retrieval services are available to postgraduate <strong>and</strong> final<br />
year degree students doing projects approved by their teachers. Students<br />

each academic year. Topical workshops <strong>and</strong> various information literacy<br />

University Health Service<br />
The Campus Clinic provides Primary Health Care for the University<br />
Community. <strong>Services</strong> available to full-time students include clinical<br />
consultations, medication, first aid, minor operative treatment, immunisation<br />
<strong>and</strong> certification on health examination. Subsidised primary dental care is<br />
also available for full-time students. Traditional Chinese Medicine (Internal<br />
Medicine) service is also available at the Clinic.<br />
Our in-house laboratory is equipped to perform a comprehensive range of<br />
investigations, providing timely services in a general practice setting,<br />
supporting both clinical <strong>and</strong> health surveillance (certification examinations).<br />
Laboratory results can also be delivered to patients via Short Message<br />
System (SMS). The on-campus X-ray facility offers radiographic work<br />
with progressive development in Computer Radiography (CR). Other health<br />
care modalities that could enhance one-stop-shop service include the<br />
development of Teledermatology.<br />
The principle to practise Medicine without medicine is emphasised through<br />
Health Promotion <strong>and</strong> Patient Education, with information provision <strong>and</strong><br />
community-wide activities on how to achieve <strong>and</strong> maintain good health.<br />
Various opportunistic health programmes <strong>and</strong> anticipatory care area are<br />

Student Halls of Residence<br />
<strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Services</strong><br />
Located at 1 Hong Lai Road, Hung Hom, the Student Halls of Residence is<br />
within a 15-minute walk from the <strong>PolyU</strong> campus via a covered footbridge,<br />
providing 3,004 residential places. It is built with a gr<strong>and</strong> dining hall, a<br />
25-meter swimming pool, a fitness room, a computer room, a l<strong>and</strong>scape<br />
garden, activity rooms <strong>and</strong> various facilities.<br />
All student rooms are equipped with IP phones, LAN ports, air-conditioners<br />
<strong>and</strong> furniture <strong>and</strong> designed for double occupancy, with toilet <strong>and</strong> shower<br />
room shared between two adjoining rooms.<br />
The Student Halls provide not just a place to hedge in but abundant<br />
opportunities for interaction with students of diverse culture <strong>and</strong><br />
backgrounds, offering a perfect ground for enhancing the social <strong>and</strong><br />
communication skills of students for their personal growth <strong>and</strong> pursuit of<br />

Hall Fees<br />
The following hall fees will be charged for the 2005/06 residential year<br />
(for a total of 283 calendar days, from 1 September 2005 to 9 June 2006):<br />
Hall Lodging Fee<br />
Hall lodging fee is payable in two instalments,<br />
covering the residential period of 1st <strong>and</strong> 2nd<br />
semester respectively.<br />
For current students, they are required to settle<br />
the 1st instalment before the commencement<br />
of hall residence to substantiate their acceptance<br />
of hall residential offer.<br />

Chiang Chen Studio Theatre<br />
This is a 247-seat studio theatre located on the ground floor of the Chung<br />
Sze Yuen Building. It is well equipped for conferences, talks, seminars,<br />
forums, performances, slide <strong>and</strong> video shows, film <strong>and</strong> other functions.<br />

Fong Shu Chuen Hall<br />
This multi-purpose hall can be used for performances, conferences,<br />
exhibitions, examinations <strong>and</strong> other functions.<br />
Jockey Club Auditorium<br />
Purposely built to provide a cultural hub for students, the 1,025-seat Jockey<br />
Club Auditorium is specially designed as a multi-purpose venue for the<br />
hosting of conferences, seminars, assemblies as well as dramas, dances,<br />
variety shows, film shows, mini concerts, etc. Apart from providing you<br />
with a performing venue on campus, the Auditorium’s spacious entrance<br />

<strong>Services</strong> for Students with Disabilities<br />
The Student Affairs Office coordinates the services for students with<br />
disabilities. All disabled students are advised to contact the Counselling<br />
<strong>and</strong> Placement <strong>Services</strong> Section of the Student Affairs Office (Tel: 2766<br />
6800) or their Departmental Office to discuss their special needs.<br />
Designated Counsellor<br />
Our counsellor will discuss with individual student with a disability<br />
on his/her needs at the beginning of each term to determine what<br />
accommodations are necessary. Each student will be assigned a counsellor<br />
to follow through his/her adjustment during his/her stay in the University.<br />
The counsellor will also liaise, on behalf of the students, with departments<br />
concerned regarding services requested.<br />
Learning <strong>and</strong> Study Aid<br />
Depending on the nature of disability, special arrangements such as<br />
providing soft copies or enlarged version of h<strong>and</strong>outs/notes, allowing extra<br />
time for examination, preparing examination paper in alternative formats<br />
may be made. Student volunteers may provide services like typing <strong>and</strong><br />
recording.<br />
UO<br />
A Resources Centre located at L301A of the Library is equipped with<br />
personal computers, powerBraille, scanners, magnifying device, Braille<br />
printer, speech synthesizer <strong>and</strong> voice electronic dictionary suitable for the<br />
use of visually impaired students. Personal FM system for hearing impaired<br />
students <strong>and</strong> computer notebook for students on wheelchairs are also<br />
available for loan.
<strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Services</strong><br />
Library<br />
Priority is given to students with disabilities at all service counters <strong>and</strong> in<br />
the use of photocopying services <strong>and</strong> research carrels. Seats are reserved<br />
<strong>and</strong> special trolleys for carrying books are available on each floor of the<br />
library. Library staff are also ready to assist these students to complete<br />
library procedures, including locating books. Users of the Resources Centre<br />
may inquire at the Media <strong>Services</strong> Counter, 3/F for access.<br />
Financial Assistance <strong>and</strong> Scholarships<br />
Full-time UGC-funded students with financial needs can apply for grant<br />
<strong>and</strong> loan from the Government Local Student Finance Scheme (LSFS).<br />
Applications are means-tested <strong>and</strong> different amounts may be awarded to<br />
students according to individual needs. Applicants receiving Disability<br />
Allowance from the Social Welfare Department may be granted a<br />
discretionary loan on top of the original entitlements.<br />
Both full-time <strong>and</strong> part-time students with financial needs can apply for a<br />
loan from the Government Non-means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS).<br />
Applications are non-means tested <strong>and</strong> the NLS Loan is meant for the<br />
payment of tuition fees only.<br />
Full-time UGC-funded students with financial needs can also apply for<br />
assistance from the <strong>PolyU</strong> Financial Assistance Scheme. Special<br />
consideration may be given to expenses incurred from disability.<br />
In addition to scholarships available to full-time students, full-time students<br />
with disabilities meeting the requirements <strong>and</strong> criteria may be nominated<br />
by Heads of Department to compete for Sir Edward Youde Memorial Awards<br />
for Disabled Students <strong>and</strong> Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship(s)/<br />
Scholarship(s) for Disabled Students. Other scholarships are also available<br />

Campus <strong>Access</strong> <strong>and</strong> Emergency<br />
All buildings on campus are accessible via ramps or lifts. As the buildings<br />
were completed at different stages, their provisions for students with<br />
disabilities are in accordance with statutory requirements at the time of<br />
their completion <strong>and</strong> may therefore vary slightly. In this connection, smallscale<br />
improvements have been <strong>and</strong> will continue to be made to improve<br />
accessibility <strong>and</strong> safety, with a view to matching the provisions with the<br />
latest statutory requirements.<br />

<strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Services</strong><br />
Students with disabilities are advised to get familiar with major escape<br />
routes within buildings. Lift lobbies <strong>and</strong> staircase l<strong>and</strong>ings are usually<br />
protected by fire doors. In case of emergency, students with mobility<br />
difficulties may consider staying at these areas for a short period of time<br />
<strong>and</strong>/or contact Campus Security Control Centre at 2766 7999 for assistance.<br />

Parking<br />
Students with disabilities are eligible to apply for campus parking permits.<br />
There are, at present, three car-parking spaces designated to disabled drivers.<br />

<strong>and</strong> the <strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>Management</strong> Office. Students with disabilities are advised<br />

certification of h<strong>and</strong>icap issued by the Government <strong>and</strong> third party<br />

Sports<br />
All sports facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities. Wheelchair<br />
users requiring assistance in entry can ask for help from manned counters.<br />
A transfer tier <strong>and</strong> a lifeguard lift are available to help disabled swimmers<br />
to get in <strong>and</strong> out from the swimming pool. Special arrangement will also<br />
be made for students with disabilities wishing to participate in physical<br />
education programme.<br />
Priority Service<br />
Students with disabilities are given priority in many of the service counters,<br />
e.g. at library, student canteens, Student Affairs Office, registration counter<br />
without the need to follow the normal queue. Students are advised to identify<br />
themselves if their disabilities are not obviously visible.<br />
