Information Technology Services Office
The Information Technology Services Office (ITS) provides central IT
facilities and services to support the University’s learning, teaching, research,
administration and communication.
IT Facilities for Students
All full-time and part-time students of the University can have access to a
full range of central IT facilities and services on campus. These include
the University’s central computer systems, campus e-mail system,
University Portal, dial-up facility, web-based learning services, Internet
and network services etc. Please refer to the Student Handbook on IT
Facilities and Service’s (http://www.polyu.edu.hk/its/student_handbook/)
for a full list of IT services available to students. Students can access the
central IT facilities and services with their PolyU NetID. New students
have to activate their NetID and select their NetPassword online by clicking
the “New Student” button on the University Portal Login Page at
https://my.polyu.edu.hk.
Student Computer Centre on Campus
SU
The Central Student Computer Centre (SCC) is set up on campus for walkin
use by students as well as pre-scheduled classes. You can access the full
range of central IT facilities through the networked PCs in the SCC.

Facilities and Services
Network outlets and wireless access points are available in all the lecture
theatres and at convenient public areas around campus so that you can
connect your notebook any time to access the central IT facilities.
User Help Centre and Hotline Services
You can seek advice and assistance related to the use of IT facilities and
services including enquiries on your NetID from the consultants at the ITS
Help Centre/Hotline. You can visit the ITS Help Centre at M201 of the Li
Ka Shing Tower in person or call the ITS Hotline 2766 5900. You can also
send in your request on the Web and track its progress through the Help
Centre Online Tracking Service (HOTS) (https://hots.polyu.edu.hk).
Information Services
The Student Handbook on IT Facilities and Services is a comprehensive
guide helping you to fully utilise IT services during your study in the
University. Latest information on new IT facilities and services is
communicated to you through the monthly ITS Newsletter – “Get
Connected” and via the University Portal. The University strongly advocates
the use of electronic communication and all ITS publications and
announcements are distributed electronically. You can access it round the
clock anywhere by browsing the ITS Website, the University Portal and
your PolyU web e-mail account.

Pao Yue-kong Library
The Pao Yue-kong Library is a six-storey, purpose-designed building with
an area of 16,674 square metres, providing around 3,500 reader places.
The attractive library environment is air-conditioned, carpeted and has an
acoustic ceiling to minimise noise.
The Collections
The Library comprises one of the largest collections of scientific,
engineering and business materials in East Asia. Other areas of strength
are information technology, computing, nursing, textiles and design. The
present collection exceeds 1.8 million items, to which more than 40,000
volumes are added annually. Over 7,900 active print serial titles are held

in the Library. The Library also provides Internet access to over
32,300 unique full-text electronic journal titles and 10,500 electronic books.

Online Access to Information
The Library operates an integrated computerised system (INNOPAC) and
its Library Catalogue is accessible within the Library Building, campuswide
and also remotely from your home. Up-to-date information on library
services and opening hours can be accessed via the Library home page.
Other services such as book reservations, checking of loan records, book
ordering recommendations and suggestions on library matters can also be
made via the Library home page.
The Library is also networked with other universities and colleges in Hong
Kong and overseas via the Hong Kong Academic Research Network
(HARNET) and Internet respectively.
Electronic Resources
Provision of electronic information is a priority of the Library. A multitude
of electronic resources including electronic books, standards, newspaper
databases, reference tools and electronic journals can be accessed via
the Library home page. Abstract and full-text databases such as the Web of
Knowledge databases, INSPEC, Chemical Abstracts (SciFinder Scholar),
ProQuest databases, nursing collections of the Journals@Ovid, and
LexisNexis Academic are included. Access to electronic journal gateways
from prominent publishers is also available. A few examples are:
ScienceDirect, Wiley-Interscience, Emerald Fulltext and IOP Electronic
journals. Electronic images and videos on demand are also available on
the Library home page. Most electronic resources can be accessed away
from campus. You should refer to the “Remote Access to the Library”
section on the Library home page for instructions.
Online information retrieval services are available to postgraduate and final
year degree students doing projects approved by their teachers. Students
concerned are welcome to approach the Information Services Section of
the Library.
Inter-Library Loans and Document Delivery Services

To supplement the Library’s extensive holdings, inter-library loan and
document delivery services with local, Chinese mainland and overseas
libraries/document suppliers, such as the British Library and the OCLC

Use of Library Materials
A professional librarian is stationed at the Information Desk to assist you
in retrieving information and in using the library materials effectively. You
can also make enquiries online or at all service counters in the Library.
Database search guides, various subject guides and other information leaflets
are available at the Information Desk to help you in the use of library
resources. Most search guides are also available for downloading via the
Library home page.

Library Orientation and Information Literacy
Facilities and Services
Orientation classes designed to help students to understand Library services
and the use of the Library Catalogue are conducted at the beginning of
each academic year. Topical workshops and various information literacy
programmes are run on a regular basis. Please watch out for announcements
and enrol on the Library home page.
An Online Information Literacy Programme is available via the Library
home page. Staff and students of PolyU who successfully completed this
self-paced online interactive tutorial will be awarded a certificate.
Personal Information Consultancy Service
To empower researchers to navigate in the world of knowledge, the Library
provides a personal consultancy service to help users to make strategic use
of the relevant resources for research purpose. You should call 2766 6858
for an appointment.

Through the Library’s 24-hour automated enquiry hotline, you can have

University Health Service
The Campus Clinic provides Primary Health Care for the University
Community. Services available to full-time students include clinical
consultations, medication, first aid, minor operative treatment, immunisation
and certification on health examination. Subsidised primary dental care is
also available for full-time students. Traditional Chinese Medicine (Internal
Medicine) service is also available at the Clinic.
Our in-house laboratory is equipped to perform a comprehensive range of
investigations, providing timely services in a general practice setting,
supporting both clinical and health surveillance (certification examinations).
Laboratory results can also be delivered to patients via Short Message
System (SMS). The on-campus X-ray facility offers radiographic work
with progressive development in Computer Radiography (CR). Other health
care modalities that could enhance one-stop-shop service include the
development of Teledermatology.
The principle to practise Medicine without medicine is emphasised through
Health Promotion and Patient Education, with information provision and
community-wide activities on how to achieve and maintain good health.
Various opportunistic health programmes and anticipatory care area are
also organised to achieve healthy goals and targets.
Whilst provision of consultation and dental care are currently limited to
full-time students, part-time students are welcome to participate in all
campaigns on disease prevention and healthy life-style practices.

• The Kwong On Jubilee Sports Centre in the Communal Building
comprises a multi-purpose sports hall for basketball and badminton,
four squash courts, an activity room and a laboratory for fitness testing.
• The Shaw Sports Complex consists of a main gymnasium for
basketball/badminton/volleyball/handball; a practice gymnasium for
badminton/martial art/judo/fencing/volleyball; a fitness room; a
physical training room; a basketball shooting room; two golf driving
bays; an activity room; two roof-top tennis courts and a table-tennis room.
• The Keith Legg Sports Field and Pavilion includes an outdoor
basketball/volleyball court; a soccer pitch; two tennis courts; and a
pavilion which houses the P.E. General Office.

• The Joint Sports Centre at Renfrew Road, Kowloon Tong, which is
shared with the Hong Kong Baptist University and the City University
of Hong Kong, provides a 400m all weather track, a standard size
soccer pitch, a multi-purpose court for basketball, volleyball, handball
and 5-a-side soccer, golf practice area, 4 tennis courts for sports
competition, training and recreational use.

Student Lockers
All full-time students pursuing studies by coursework will be allocated at
first registration a metal locker which they may use throughout their years
of full-time studies for storing personal belongings. All enquiries concerning

Communal Building.
Communal Facilities
The Shaw Amenities Building and the Amenities Centre inside the
Communal Building provide various kinds of communal facilities including
a conference room, music appreciation and practice rooms, a TV room,
multi-purpose rooms, a common room, and a mini-exhibition area. You
should refer to the following tables for the opening hours of the Amenities
Centre as well as other facilities available on campus.

Student Halls of Residence
Facilities and Services
Located at 1 Hong Lai Road, Hung Hom, the Student Halls of Residence is
within a 15-minute walk from the PolyU campus via a covered footbridge,
providing 3,004 residential places. It is built with a grand dining hall, a
25-meter swimming pool, a fitness room, a computer room, a landscape
garden, activity rooms and various facilities.
All student rooms are equipped with IP phones, LAN ports, air-conditioners
and furniture and designed for double occupancy, with toilet and shower
room shared between two adjoining rooms.
The Student Halls provide not just a place to hedge in but abundant
opportunities for interaction with students of diverse culture and
backgrounds, offering a perfect ground for enhancing the social and
communication skills of students for their personal growth and pursuit of
academic excellence.

Hall Fees
The following hall fees will be charged for the 2005/06 residential year
(for a total of 283 calendar days, from 1 September 2005 to 9 June 2006):

Hall lodging fee is payable in two instalments,
covering the residential period of 1st and 2nd
semester respectively.
For current students, they are required to settle
the 1st instalment before the commencement
of hall residence to substantiate their acceptance
of hall residential offer.

For first year students, given the tight admission
schedule, they shall settle the 1st instalment in
September.

Hall Caution Money
It is chargeable to all students upon the
acceptance of hall residential offer.

It is refundable on official withdrawal from or
termination of hall residence, subject to no claim
on hall residence or other hall related charges
being outstanding. Any residual amount of the
Hall Caution Money after any deduction shall be
refunded by the Finance Office in due course.
It shall be forfeited if the provisional resident fails
to settle the 1st instalment of hall fee before hall
residence, or if his/her hall residence is terminated
for disciplinary actions.

It is payable in two instalments, covering the
residential period of 1st and 2nd semester

Chiang Chen Studio Theatre
This is a 247-seat studio theatre located on the ground floor of the Chung
Sze Yuen Building. It is well equipped for conferences, talks, seminars,

Fong Shu Chuen Hall
This multi-purpose hall can be used for performances, conferences,
exhibitions, examinations and other functions.
Jockey Club Auditorium
Purposely built to provide a cultural hub for students, the 1,025-seat Jockey
Club Auditorium is specially designed as a multi-purpose venue for the
hosting of conferences, seminars, assemblies as well as dramas, dances,
variety shows, film shows, mini concerts, etc. Apart from providing you
with a performing venue on campus, the Auditorium’s spacious entrance

foyer and amphitheatre offer you perfect venues for all sorts of indoor and
outdoor exhibitions, receptions and gatherings.

With its unique ancient classical theatre design, this facility is second to
none amongst other venues in town. From structural to technological
designs, all minute details have been carefully planned including provision
of spacious legroom, wheelchair users and assistive device for the hearing
impaired.

Services for Students with Disabilities
The Student Affairs Office coordinates the services for students with
disabilities. All disabled students are advised to contact the Counselling
and Placement Services Section of the Student Affairs Office (Tel: 2766
6800) or their Departmental Office to discuss their special needs.
Designated Counsellor
Our counsellor will discuss with individual student with a disability
on his/her needs at the beginning of each term to determine what
accommodations are necessary. Each student will be assigned a counsellor
to follow through his/her adjustment during his/her stay in the University.
The counsellor will also liaise, on behalf of the students, with departments
concerned regarding services requested.
Learning and Study Aid
Depending on the nature of disability, special arrangements such as
providing soft copies or enlarged version of handouts/notes, allowing extra
time for examination, preparing examination paper in alternative formats
may be made. Student volunteers may provide services like typing and
recording.

A Resources Centre located at L301A of the Library is equipped with
personal computers, powerBraille, scanners, magnifying device, Braille
printer, speech synthesizer and voice electronic dictionary suitable for the
use of visually impaired students. Personal FM system for hearing impaired
students and computer notebook for students on wheelchairs are also
available for loan.

Library
Priority is given to students with disabilities at all service counters and in
the use of photocopying services and research carrels. Seats are reserved
and special trolleys for carrying books are available on each floor of the
library. Library staff are also ready to assist these students to complete
library procedures, including locating books. Users of the Resources Centre
may inquire at the Media Services Counter, 3/F for access.
Financial Assistance and Scholarships
Full-time UGC-funded students with financial needs can apply for grant
and loan from the Government Local Student Finance Scheme (LSFS).
Applications are means-tested and different amounts may be awarded to
students according to individual needs. Applicants receiving Disability
Allowance from the Social Welfare Department may be granted a
discretionary loan on top of the original entitlements.
Both full-time and part-time students with financial needs can apply for a
loan from the Government Non-means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS).
Applications are non-means tested and the NLS Loan is meant for the
payment of tuition fees only.
Full-time UGC-funded students with financial needs can also apply for
assistance from the PolyU Financial Assistance Scheme. Special
consideration may be given to expenses incurred from disability.
In addition to scholarships available to full-time students, full-time students
with disabilities meeting the requirements and criteria may be nominated
by Heads of Department to compete for Sir Edward Youde Memorial Awards
for Disabled Students and Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship(s)/
Scholarship(s) for Disabled Students. Other scholarships are also available
from the community. For further enquiries, you should call 2766 6802.
Campus Access and Emergency
All buildings on campus are accessible via ramps or lifts. As the buildings
were completed at different stages, their provisions for students with
disabilities are in accordance with statutory requirements at the time of
their completion and may therefore vary slightly. In this connection, smallscale

Facilities and Services
Students with disabilities are advised to get familiar with major escape
routes within buildings. Lift lobbies and staircase landings are usually
protected by fire doors. In case of emergency, students with mobility
difficulties may consider staying at these areas for a short period of time
and/or contact Campus Security Control Centre at 2766 7999 for assistance.

Parking
Students with disabilities are eligible to apply for campus parking permits.
There are, at present, three car-parking spaces designated to disabled drivers.
Application forms can be downloaded at http://www.polyu.edu.hk/~fmo/
forms.htm or obtainable from the general office of academic departments
and the Facilities Management Office. Students with disabilities are advised
to submit their completed application forms together with supporting
documents (photocopies of vehicle licence, driving licence, student ID card,
certification of handicap issued by the Government and third party
insurance) to speed up processing. Enquiries could be directed to the
Facilities Management Office at 2766 7175.
Sports
All sports facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities. Wheelchair
users requiring assistance in entry can ask for help from manned counters.
A transfer tier and a lifeguard lift are available to help disabled swimmers
to get in and out from the swimming pool. Special arrangement will also
be made for students with disabilities wishing to participate in physical
education programme.
Priority Service
Students with disabilities are given priority in many of the service counters,
e.g. at library, student canteens, Student Affairs Office, registration counter
without the need to follow the normal queue. Students are advised to identify
themselves if their disabilities are not obviously visible.
