Singapore and Egypt enjoy warm and friendly 

ties since the establishment of bilateral 

relations on 28 November 1966, a year after 

the independence of Singapore in August 1965. 

The two countries managed to hold successful 

coordination in international fora, and their 

positions coincided on many issues. That was 

most evident after Egypt helped Singapore 

to join the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), 

which served as a main source of support 

to the independence of Singapore then. 

The significance of featuring both Nile and 

Singapore Rivers is that both rivers are the 

rivers of life of both countries. Historically, 

when Singapore was founded in 1819, 

Singapore River served as the main lifeblood 

of the then-colony. Similarly, the Nile River, 

generally regarded as the longest river in 

the world, has been the lifeline of civilization 

in Egypt since the Stone Age, with most of 

the population and all of the cities of Egypt 

resting along those parts of the Nile valley 

lying north of Aswan.

Singapore is proud to be the host for the 

20th World Orchid Conference (WOC). The 

20th WOC, “Where New and Old World 

Orchids Meet” will be held at Marina Bay. 

Beautifully illustrated in this set of stamps 

are the wonderful Orchid selections of 

Singapore, “Where new and old world 

orchids meet” in an orchid extravaganza 

in 2011. 

Vanda Miss Joaquim (1st Local) 

Named after the originator, Miss Agnes 

Joaquim in 1893, Vanda Miss Joaquim is the 

first vanda hybrid to be registered. Based 

on its beauty, resilience and blooming 

quality, Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen 

as the National Flower of Singapore on 

15 April 1981. 

Renanthera 20th WOC Singapore 2011 (45c) 

This is the official flower of the 20th 

World Orchid Conference. The red blossoms 

signify prosperity, wealth and success. 

Dendrobium World Peace (65c) 

The well-shaped, good texture flowers 

of some 7cm across, come with white or 

creamy petals and sepals that are veined 

light purple. 

Cyrtocidium Goldiana (80c) 

This flower is widely known as ‘Golden 

Shower’ in Singapore. The elegant yellow 

flower is also popularly known as the 

“Dancing Ladies”. 

Grammatophyllum speciosum ($2) 

This is the largest orchid in the world. 

Also known as the Tiger Orchid because 

markings on the flowers resemble that of 

the skin of a tiger.

A DESIGNER’S STORY: 

Nico’s Story 

(Nicodemus Loh is the designer for the “World Orchid 

Conference 2011” stamp issue. His other works include 

the “Nature Series - Butterflies” issue in 2010 and 

the first Zodiac stamp series from 1996 - 2007.) 

Given the opportunity to work on the first series 

of Zodiac stamps that were released from 1996, 

throughout the many years, I had the pleasure 

working with SingPost on many other stamp issues 

including Singapore-Switzerland joint issue (2001), 

Butterflies (2010) etc. Last year, I was given the 

opportunity yet again to work on the designs for 

the “World Orchid Conference” stamp issue in 2011. 

Though I had attempted on a similar theme many 

years back, it still gives me great pleasure in 

illustrating this largest family of flowering plants. 

When I first received the theme, I started my 

research through the Internet for pictures to get 

an idea of the species chosen. Since this was my 

second attempt, I roughly knew the difficulties I 

will face. Knowing the importance to actually see 

the plants and to feel them, I made a trip down 

to the Botanical gardens to take pictures of the 

them up close, adding to the photos that I 

received from SingPost. 

With all the photos available, I did a rough sketch 

of how each flower should be established in the 

stamp. As I did this, I also put in the logos and 

text of the stamps. With this skeleton, I started 

proper sketching and colouring of the orchids. 

Accuracy in the drawings is most important, as 

that’s where most of the comments from the 

subject matter expert came. 

With the revisions required, I put my PhotoShop 

skills to use. After a few rounds of cutting and 

shifting of the originals, I cannot remember what 

the original design used to be. However, it 

resulted in a better-looking design; where the 

flowers are put across simpler and clearer.

The challenge was to draw a basket full of the 

5 species of orchids, needing to cater the depth 

of the various species, the greenery required 

to contrast the flowers and to make the basket 

life-like! The completed artwork was rewarding. 

Nothing can be compared to the joy at the end, 

when all items are placed together looking like 

one complete set. Every set of stamp is an 

enriching experience to do. You get to learn so 

much from the subject and also be a part of history. 

Another task I was later given was to do the 

$5 collector’s sheet. That was one of the most 

interesting stamp design I have ever worked on.

The Chinese calendar is based on five cycles of 12 

years each, with each cycle tempered by one of the 

five Chinese elements - Metal, Wood, Water, Fire 

and Earth. Each year features one of 12 animal 

signs, and the year 2012 is that of the Water Dragon. 

The year 2012 marks the reign of the legendary 

Dragon and the fifth animal in the Zodiac series on 

the Chinese calendar. This intelligent, flamboyant 

and magnanimous animal is depicted on this set 

of stamps (1st Local, 65¢ and $1.10).

Legends and Myths IX – The Legend of the White Snake

The Legend of the White Snake is one of the four popular 

folk legends of China, it was inscribed in the first batch 

of National Intangible Cultural Heritages List in 2006. 

This issue includes a set of six stamps and one souvenir 

sheet, the stamp theme was selected from the classic 

plots from the novel. 

50th Anniversary of WWF 

[ 11 SEPTEMBER 2011 ] 

2011 marks the 50th Anniversary of World Wide Fund For 

Nature (WWF), an organisation of environment protection 

with global network and influence. To commemorate this 

anniversary, Macao Post issued a set of six stamps on 

native birds. 

170th Anniversary of Hong Kong Postal Service 

[ 25 AUGUST 2011 ] 

The first post office in Hong Kong was opened on 25 

August 1841, heralding the beginning of the local postal 

service. The year 2011 marks the 170th anniversary of 

postal services in Hong Kong. Hongkong Post issued a 

stamp sheetlet to commemorate the occasion.

UNITED KINGDOM 

London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic 

Games 3 

[ 27 JULY 2011 ] 

As part of the countdown to the 

London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic 

Games, Royal Mail commissioned 30 

artist and image makers to take part 

in this three-year project. 

This would see the creation of 30 

stamps to mark the 30th Olympiad 

and London 2012 Paralympic Games, 

with each stamp championing an 

Olympic or Paralympic sport, issued 

in three sets of ten stamps in 2009, 

2010 and 2011. 

The third and final set in this exciting 

series, subtitled ‘Get Ready for 2012’, 

contains a new set of ten dynamic 

images issued exactly one year before 

the opening ceremony of the London 

2012 Olympic Games. 

The Crown Jewels

The British Crown Jewels are known 

around the world as a dazzling 

collection of objects representing 

royal sovereignty, the Crown Jewels 

are also remarkable due to their 

continuity of use: the collection is 

still used in a coronation ceremony 

that has changed little in a thousand 

years. The stamps focus on details 

from some of the most important 

and iconic items with the Crown 

Jewel collection. Images were 

specifically chosen to reflect the 

beauty and intricate workmanship 

of the items featured.

Secondary School Gold award winners 

NATIONAL STAMP COLLECTING COMPETITION 2011 

The National Stamp Collecting Competition 

(NSCC) 2011 was held at the National Library 

from 2 to 4 September 2011. The annual 

competition was organised by Singapore 

Philatelic Museum and supported by the 

Ministry of Education, Singapore Post Limited 

and the Association of Singapore Philatelists. 

The competition drew more than 750 

participants from 27 primary and secondary 

schools, and tertiary institutions. Participants 

selected a topic of their choice, did research 

and presented their findings using a variety 

of philatelic materials. They also gained 

research, organisation, language and 

writing skills. 

Entries that were awarded Gold, Silver and 

Bronze awards were displayed. Visitors 

were treated to a diverse range of themes 

depicted on philatelic materials and interesting 

storylines weaved by the participants. 

Topics that caught the judges fancy and were 

awarded a Gold award include ‘Unusual 

Stamps’ , ‘The Stories Handicrafts Tell’, 

‘The Chinese Zodiac’, ‘Flights of Fancy’, ‘Fruit 

Delicacies’, ‘Tree-Tastic’, ‘Royal Families’, 

‘Football’, ‘Singapore’s Son: Mr Lee Kuan Yew 

and his Influence in Nation Building’, ‘Animals 

in the Entertainment World’, ‘Animals In 

Savannahs’, ‘The Colourful Fashion Scene’ 

and ‘The Symphony of Music’. 

The guest-of-honour for the Prize Presentation 

Ceremony was Mr Edmund Chen, the Singapore 

Post Stamp Ambassador. Top awards were 

presented to Holy Innocent’s High - Secondary 

School Champions; Yishun Primary School – 

Primary School Champions, and Gregory Quek 

- Best Youth Exhibit. 

Students can attend hands-on training workshops 

for NSCC 2012 in January. Teachers 

can sign up their students for the workshop

artistic creation 

in process 

This exhibition is held in conjunction 

with the charitable event, the 

Elephant Parade Singapore 2011, 

where a herd of over 150 brightly 

painted life-size elephants will be 

displayed at different venues in 

Singapore for two months. The 

elephants will be auctioned and 

part of the proceeds will be donated 

to The Asian Elephant Foundation. 

At Singapore Philatelic Museum, 

visitors will be able to view an 

elephant uniquely designed with 

stamps. This work is created by 

Mr Sun Yu-li, a local sculptor 

and artist. 

The Elephant Stampede traces the evolution of 

mammoths to elephants, the shrinking of the 

elephant habitats, and factors that have caused 

the reduction in elephant populations. Visitors 

can engage in interactive exhibits to differentiate 

African and Asian elephants, as well as learn fun 

facts about elephants. The exhibition highlights 

the symbolism, meaning and significance of 

elephants in Asia, and concludes with what 

humans should do to help the Asian elephants. 

In addition, a collection of elephant skull, 

tusks, and molars will be on loan from the 

Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, 

National University of Singapore.

Georges Remi, also known as Hergé 

(22 May 1907 - 03 March 1983). Tintin 

and his dog companion, Snowy, enjoyed 

exciting adventures that took them 

to various places in the world such 

as Tibet, Congo, America, Russia and 

even the moon!

stamps issued by Belgium, France and 

the Netherlands from the museum’s 

Universal Postal Union Collection. 

Rarely seen original stamp artworks, 

colour trials, and other philatelic 

materials from the Museum Voor 

Communicatie, the Netherlands, and 

L’Adresse Musée de La Poste in France 

will be on display for the first time 

in Singapore.

A 7% GST is payable on all postal stationery and philatelic products such as 

presentation packs, miniature sheets and annual collections purchased in Singapore. 

Overseas customers who place mail orders with the Singapore Philatelic Bureau need 

not pay GST. 

All orders are accepted subject to availability of stocks. Where orders cannot be met, 

refunds will be made less the appropriate commission charge. 

Stamps are supplied in mint or cancelled-to-order (CTO) condition, if requested. 

The normal Singapore Philatelic Bureau metal circular datestamp will be used on the 

CTO stamps. 

All mail orders for philatelic products (excluding Annual Collections and Premium 

Gifts) are subject to a handling charge as follows:

Customers who order Annual Collections and Premium Gifts are required to pay an 

additional handling charge as follows:

Remittance for orders should include the handling charge and registration fee in 

addition to the value of the items ordered. Insufficient payment will be met by a 

reduction in the value of stamps sent. 

Each order should be accompanied by a remittance which may be in the form of 

credit card, postal order, money order, cheque or bank draft made out in Singapore 

currency. Remittance must be payable to “Singapore Post Limited” and crossed “A/C 

Payee” only. Do not send cash by post. 

Credit card payment is only available to mail order customers ie customers who 

place orders by post.
