Family History
First Edition 2007
by Amy Berga
This is a book in progress. If I waited until it was complete, it would never be printed. Please make any corrections to
my errors and omissions. Facts have been collected from many different sources and can be wrong, so please check them
carefully. I am interested in any stories or photos you may have on any of the listed family members. My goal is to
compile a complete family picture of these individuals, not just names and dates. Thank you everyone who contributed
to our family history.
Notes for JOHANNES PIKKA:
Johannes Pikka was born to Johan and Sanna Pikka on the first of September, 1874 in Hevonkosken, Finland.
Johannes married Maria Serafina Maki, August 14, 1896. Maria was born in Finland on August 14, 1877, and
was nineteen on her wedding day. 1895 older brother Matti Pikka boarded a cattle ship to America. Johannes
follow, leaving behind his wife in search of a new home. Johannes would not be reunited with her again until
1903, when the family settled in the town of Wakefield, Michigan. Johannes provided for his growing family in
the iron mines. The couple would add to their family, John Eli, Tola, Fannie, Impie, Tovio, Walter, Gust and little
Irene. John and Mary, as they were now called, became American citizens in 1905. Johannes was only 43 years
old when his wife, Maria, died, September 30, 1917. Maria left behind their oldest daughter, Impie, age 11, to
care for her young siblings. Tovio was 10, Walter, 7, Gust 5, and little Irene was only 4. It is believed that she
died from compications from child birth at age 40.
September 12, 1918, Johannes would sign up for the draft. He was 43 and would not be called to serve his
country in the Great War. Instead, Johannes would work along side his sons in the iron mine until his death at the
age of 71. Johannes died after falling down the stairway of the family's two story home, breaking his neck. His
son, Toivo and wife Mary, lived downstairs. The year was January 13, 1946.
Notes for JOHN ELI PIKKA:
John Eli Pikka was born in Finland, July 20, 1896 to Johannes and Maria Serafina Pikka. When Johan was
four years old, he traveled with his mother to America, where his father awaited them. It was in Wakefield,
Michigan, 1916, that he met and married Ali Susanna Pysto-Anderson. This was the same year that he and his
father registered for the draft. John Eli was 21 years old, and his new bride, 19. Ali Anderson was the daughter of
August and Charlotta Pysto-Anderson, born on February 6, 1898 in Wakefield. She had to quite school in the 8th
grade to help out at home. August had come to America from Finland and changed his name once arriving in
Michigan. Both Charlotta and August came with their families from Finland and married in Wakefield, Michigan.
A son, Ronald, was born their first year of marriage in 1917. A year later, another son, Carl was born,
followed by Fay and finally Charlotte Marlys in 1928. In 1930 the family's estate was valued at $700.00 and they
owned a radio set.
During the war, John worked in Greeland, he sailed back to Boston on the Fairfax, December 31, 1943. His
grandson, Ron, remembers he worked on airplane runways. Back at home in Wakefield, Michigan the family
rented their home and John Eli worked with his father in the iron mine. John worked in the iron mine in
Wakefield, until a heart attack took his life at the age of 67, on April 27, 1964. John had been sawing up some old
lumber, with a hand saw, behind his garage when his wife called him to supper. When no response came, she
went to check on him, and found his body. John had been a quiet, hard working man who was able to keep his
children in check with just one look.
Once widowed, Ali would take extended trips to visit her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Fay Ulvia, in
Sullivan Missouri; sometime staying several months; reported by her home newspaper, the Ironwood Daily
Globe. When Ali was 76 years old she took a geography course at the local community college and made an A in
7
