Hans Henrich Helt 

Hans Henrich Helt & Wilhelmine Friedrich Amalia Meier, lived on a small "hof" (farm) near Oberstein, Prussia in 

the principality of Lippe - Detmold, which is now a part of Germany. The mid seventeenth century began the fall of 

Prussia; as it's states were in constant war, young men were pressed into service, often against their own wishes. The 

ancinet class system kept the ambitious from raising above their status; and the Helt family found themselves in the 

middle of political turbulance and discrimination. We know little more of this family except that as a young man in his 

20's, Han's son, Johann, along with his sister, left his home in Oldenburg, which is in the Nahe River valley, 52 miles W 

NW of Maneheim. It is likely that they never saw their parents again.

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Helt 

"Frederick Held" 

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Helt, was born March 28, 1816 to Hans Henrich Heldt and Wilhelmine Friedericke 

Amelia Meier. During his youth, Johann had to endure the bitterness of political, religious, and social persecution, that 

defined Germany in the nineteenth century. Industrializing was progressing rapidly causing unemployment; and men 

were forced into military service, as the German States were constantly at war. In 1840, Johann received a military 

exemption in Furstenthum Lippe, Germany. He was 22 years old with red hair, blue eyes, broad nose, long face with 

beard. Before moving to Oldenburg, Germany; Johann lived in Oberstein, which is now Idar-Oberstein and home to 

Felsenkirche, the church of the rock built in 1483. 

This exemption gave him permission to move about the country. March 19, 1840 Johann moved to Sholmuer, then 

Magdle-burg and back to Sholmuer by April 3rd. Moving kept him ahead of the ever present and ever changing powermilitary 

regimes. By April 30th 1847, Johann left Amdorf, Germany; the finally stamp on his military passport. Johann 

was at a cross roads, to remain in Germany put him under the tyrannical upheaval of his country for the Great Revolution 

of 1846 was well underway, while tensions where erupting fast. Johann knew he would have to serve in the military. 

Obtaining a passport from his church in Wusten, Johann with his sister, Louise, left their parents and brother on October 

2, 1847. His voyage to America took 13 weeks. 

Soon, Johann found work in Evansville, Indiana; several months later he settled in Freelandville, Indiana. 

Freelandville, which was first settled by the English, soon became a popular place for Germans immigrants. Cheap, 

government land and it's availability as well as plenty of work on the Wabash and Erie Canal played a big part in early 

German settlements. Johan's name changed often on records as it became Americanized. Many early records spell his 

name Helt. On all American records, Johan Friedrich Wilhelm Helt, went by the name Frederick Held. 

Frederick Held met and married Sophia Louise Dickman a year later in 1848. They built their first home from 

round poles laid up like a fence, cracks filled with mud and grass. The floor was made of split planks, the door of split 

clapboards nailed up like weatherboard. There was one window of four small panes. Sheep and flax were raised for cloth, 

while walnut, Shumake and other native herbs were used for dye. 

The couple lost their first two children in infancy, Minnie and Caroline, and buried them near their home. Frederick 

and Sophia attended church services in neighborhood homes and barns until several families came together to build the 

first church on land donated by Carl Volle. The church remains there today, Bethel United Church of Christ. Church 

records show Johann was on the board of trustees in 1852. Sophia was in the first confirmation class September 4, 1851. 

In time they bought a horse and plow, while a neighbor, Fred Yocum made them a wagon. Other close neighbors 

included the Grabbes, who's son would marry Frederick's daughter Louisa; and the Lichtes, who's daughters would marry 

John and Fred Held. 

Frederick and Sophia would have ten children on their farm in Freelandville, eight of them would live past infancy. 

Wilhelmina, or Minnie, was born 1851, then Caroline, or Lena, both named for their dead infant sisters. Henrietta 

(Yetta), Fred, William, John, Louisa, and finally Henry in 1869. As their family grew, so did their home. Two brick 

rooms were added to their log structure, then later, two more rooms were added. Johann bought 40 acres of land in 

Section 3 on May 20, 1859, for $2.50 an acre. 

On January 9, 1892, Johan died of pneumonia and was buried two days later at Bethel Cemetery. His wife, followed 

him November 26, 1900 of sudden paralysis and is buried beside him.

John August Held 

John August Held was born to Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Held and Sophia Louise Dickman on October 30, 1864 in 

Freelandville, Indiana. John was the sixth of eight children born on the Held's farm. John would marry his neighbor, Mary 

Lelie Litchte on October 19, 1892. His older brother, Fred, had married Mary's older sister, Caroline six years earlier. 

Mary was the daughter of Karl Lichte and Anna Marie Hagemeier; born in Indiana, March 13, 1865, following the end of 

the Civil War. Karl and Anna Lichte had immigrated from Prussia, and had settled in Freelandville where Mary was 

born. 

John and Mary would have eight children, six would survive infancy. Their first son, Louis was born 1891, and would 

die three years later. another infant would die before Lydia Sophia would be born in 1893, followed by, Fred, Hulda, 

Carl, and twins, Albert and Alma. 

June 9, 1900 John owned his own farm in Freelandville, married nine years and three young children. Lydia, 6, Fred, 

4, and little Charley (Carl Henry) was nine months. Through each decade, little changed for the Held family. More 

children were born, but John continued to farm his land in Freelandville. During the eve of the Great Depression, with 

only their 26 year old daughter, Alma, still at home, John rented a home and worked in the sawmill, at age 67. On 

January 3, 1950 Mary died. Three years later, John August died on December 14, 1953.

Carl Henry "Chap" Held 

Carl Henry was born to John August, and Mary Held, July 28, 1899 in Indiana. He was the fifth of eight children 

born in Freelandville, Indiana. September 12, 1918, Carl registered for the draft. It describes his as medium build and 

height, with brown hair and eyes. He worked for his father's farm in Edwardsport, Indiana. Carl and Aleda were married a 

year later, in a double ceremony with her brother, Wilbur Strate and Donna Mengedoht September 6, 1919, by Rev. J. 

H. Overbeck. Carl and Aleda lived with her father for a while, later moving into Freelandville, living in two homes 

before they settled into what would later become known as the "Old Held Place." Carl and Aleda reared eight children in 

Indiana. Dorothy, Robert, Margaret, Mary, Herbert, John, Bruce and Richard. 

Carl worked as a laborer on farms, first with his father-in-law then for Albert Grabbe. Albert owned a large farm and 

employed Carl to run the thresh machine for the wheat harvest. During the Depression, when Mr. Grabbe could no longer 

afford to hire him, Carl worked for the Public Works Association, driving school bus. He drove a milk truck for Ted 

Meyer, delivered milk from farmers to Vincennes, Indiana. Later he owned and operated an upholstery shop in 

Freelandville and taught his son, John, the trade. John moved the shop to Bicknell when he married. Carl and Aleda 

moved to the house across from their church becoming the custodian and caretaker of the grave yard. At 62 Carl retired 

from his work with the church, and bought a shoe repair and harness shop which he worked until he was unable to work 

anymore. Aleda died of a heart attack on October 27, 1967. Carl died at age 80, July 15, 1978, from several 

complications. 

Carl made cars for his sons, and Aleda would sew outfits for the dolls she made every Christmas for her 

daughters. Carl once made a doll house for his girls; painted gray with blue trim. It came furnished with table and chairs, 

doll bed, and kitchen cabinets. Aleda would make clothes the children out of feed and flour sacks. Aleda saved the 

printed flour sacks for the dresses and the plain for their underwear. 

Robert and Dorothy saved their money and sent to Sears and Roebuck for a guitar. They would sit on their front 

porch, strumming the cords and singing, "Big Rock Candy Mountain" and "She'll be coming Around the Mountain." 

Bruce saved his money to buy the Eddie Arnold's record, "Cattle Call," which his nephew, Jimmy, sat on and broke. 

Dorothy remembers the old organ she thought she could play. She waited until Christmas to get some sheet music; it 

was, "Red Sails in the Sunset." Dorothy once tried to ride a bike on her own, She rode down the hill, into the lane and 

over the bridge. She landed on barbwire which stuck in her neck which she carried the scar all her life. The kids would 

ride the bike on the road and forget to take the sharp curve by Stoelting Brothers, usually ending up in the ditch. Bruce, 

being younger than his brothers, Robert, Ike and John, though he could ride the bike like them. His older brothers put him 

on the bike at the steps by the front porch and gave him a fast shove towards the direction of the path, out the gate. He 

missed the gate and hit the fence to the delight of his brothers. 

When friends and neighbors were married, the town's kids liked to wait until after dark, bringing spoons, dish pans 

and tubs, they playfully harassed the newlywed couple outside their room windows. Often they would end their fun with 

food and a party. Free shows were held every Saturday night in town. Movies would be sown on the sides of buildings and 

everyone would sit on the ground or on a piece of cardboard, sometimes even bringing their own chairs, entertaining 

themselves by playing the Euchre. Saturday evenings were a time for Aleda to do her grocery shopping. The kids cold sit 

on the chairs in the shoe store, which was part of Kixmiller's Grocery Store. They would often get a Nickle a piece to 

spend while in town. When Carl went shopping, at Aunt Mary and Uncle Charlie's store, there would always be a bag of 

candy that came home, which had not been on the list, thanks to Aunt Mary. After the Saturday entertainment, the 

children would be put to bed, often many in one bed, and the adults would play cards. Some Saturday nights, Carl would 

hook up the battery from his car to the radio; and the family would sit around it and listen to the Grand Ole Opry; Carl's 

favorite was "The Fox Chase" on the harmonica. 

While the family lived at what "The old Held's place," the beds were made of straw, in the summer, and feathers in 

the winter. Irons were wrapped in cloth after they were heated on the stove, and put at their feet, to keep them warm. The 

kitchen, as well as the back room, were made of logs. Without electricity, their perishables, such as milk and butter 

would be lowered into a bucket and kept low in the well to keep from spoiling. A peddler would come by regularly in an 

old covered truck. From him, Aleda would buy some groceries, and if she had a few pennies left, she would buy candy for 

her children. The home had an out door bathroom. The kids liked to climb up on the outhouse and swing out onto their 

home-made trapeze. One time Robert and Mel were teasing Mary, they had her on the roof and would not let her down 

until she begged to use the outhouse. Another time, they were playing with an old car that their father had made; poor 

Mary was pushed off into a ditch, she was so scared that she wet her pants. 

The old horse trough was large enough to double as swimming pool for the younger Held children. There was an even

larger trough which the oldest children used. Once, John was in the largest trough and almost drowned. The Held's had an 

old sour pig which would chase the children up the Catalpa tree, when ever they would wonder too far into the farm yard, 

which the pig occupied. There was an old discarded car that the children liked to play and would often risk the threat of 

the old pig, for a chance to play in the abandoned vehicle. 

On Sundays, after church, Carl would stop by the mercantile and buy a chuck of ice to make ice cream; which he 

made in an old freezer in the cellar. Carl would turn the crank and one of his kids would have to sit on an old gunny sack 

atop the freezer to keep it stationary. Who ever had a turn to sit through this chore was always rewarded by being 

allowed to like the paddle. Sunday was the only time the family had ice cream. One Sunday, Margaret and Robert dirtied 

their Sunday shoes. Carl caught Robert and spanked him; while Margaret ran to the chicken house and cleaned hers’ the 

best she could. She reported back to her father saying, "See, they are not dirty." 

The kids earned their money for the Church social by picking black berries, which they sold for fifteen cents a 

gallon. Aunt Alma would five them a quarter for a gallon picked. When Aleda did not have the money for Dorothy's piano 

lessons the kids would chip in and pick berries. Sometimes when money was too scarce, she would pay the instructor 

with a gallon of berries. 

Easter, the children did not have Easter baskets, so they made Easter nest from grass so that the Easter bunny would 

lay eggs in their nests. Every New Years Eve, the family had Oyster stew.

for America in 1841. He first settled in Missouri, where he married Henriette Seger in St. Louis, Missouri, on the 17th of 

February, 1852, at the age of 29. Henriette was born in Prussia, December 15, 1832, and ten years his junior. In 

November of 1853, their first son, Henry was born in Missouri. Four years later a second son, William was born. 

By 1860 Ernest had moved his young family to Freelandville, Indiana. In 1859 Henrietta Charlotte was born, 

followed by Ernest, August, Frederie, and Wilhelmine in 1868. Ernest owned a farm in Widner township in Freelandville 

and as the family grew, so did their farm's value. By 1870 Earnest's farms was worth $1,200, while their personal estate 

was $300. Ernest's children grew and married from their community. Even Ernest's grandchildren would marry close; for 

his granddaughter, Aleda would marry his long time neighbor, the Helds. 

Henriette died on January 21, 1871, little Minnie (Wilhelmine) was only 3. In 1880, first born, William, was 23 

and still at home, laboring for the family's farm. Ernest's daughter, Henriette, was 21 and kept up the house. By 1900, 

Ernest was 77 and still on his farm; he never remarried. His son Ernst and his wife Mary, with their two daughters had 

moved back home. Ernest farmed the land for his father. In 1910 Ernest continued to live with his son and daughter-inlaw, 

and grandchildren. His other children living close by in the same county. Ernest died of old age, one year later, June 

10, 1911 at his home in Freelandville, Indiana, at 88. He is buried beside his wife in Bethel Evangelical Cemetery.

August F. Strate was born in Aug 1862 in Freelandville, Indiana. He grew up on his families farm and married 

Elizabeth Bubenzer also of Indiana, October 19, 1892 when he was 19 years old. Six months later Wilbert was born. 

Elizabeth, or Lizzie as she was called, was 20 years old. Three years later Leona was born, followed by Aleda Elizabeth 

in July of 1899. Elizabeth developed T.B. and died in around 1904, leaving August to raise their three children. Aleda 

was only four years old. 

August soon remarried to 22 year old Martha Kirchoff of Indiana, in 1905. Three more girls were born to the new 

couple. Norma, Alene and Helena. August was widowed a second time between the years of 1913 and 1920, young 

Martha died. At the age of 55, August was raising his daughters and farming his land. Leona, Alene and Helena were the 

last at home. By 1930, August was alone, at the age of 66 he retired and lived out his life on his farm. His death is 

Unkown.

Ernest Bubenzer 

Ernest Bubenzer was born in 1845 in Prussia. I believe that he came to America roughly 1860 as a teenager. During 

the mid 1800's, Prussia was beginning its demise. The outcome of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, put an end to the 

aspirations of a unified state with both Germany and Austria. Instead the Franco-Prussian War left Prussia broken apart 

and the German Empire was proclaimed in 1871. It is likely that Ernest and his family left to escape the national 

termoil Prussia was under. I believe Ernest traveled with at least one brother and sister, Amelia, and Gustaf. His brother 

Gustaf, born in 1839, was a physician in Perry county, Indiana. After his first wife, Mary died in childbirth, Gustaf 

married Belle; raising three daughters and one son in Tobin, Indiana. Ernest's sister, Amelia, lived in Widner township, 

marrying Charles Folley, March 7 1867. Ernest would marry Mary Weitzel, October 3, 1867 at the age of 22. 

Mary was born in Ohio in 1848; the second of nine children born to Elizabeth and and unknown father. Mary's 

mother, Elizabeth, was born in 1824 in the German province of Hesse Kassel. She has escaped the instability of her 

homeland only to face the American Civil War. In 1860 she was widowed with nine children and living in Auburn, Ohio 

with her 87 year old, father-in-law, Lerecus. Following the Civil War young Mary moved to Freelandville to live near 

relatives. Mary would marry Ernest at the age of 19. 

Ernest and Mary would have at least nine children, Ernest Jr., Elizabeth, John, Minnie, Christian, Louis, Mary, 

William and an unknown daughter. Ernest farmed while Mary kept the home. Their son, Louis died at the age of 11, I 

suspect from T.B. for their daughter Elizabeth would also die from T.B. as a young woman.
