Croydon Hills Primary School
Principal’s Report
It is a strange week with the break in
the middle for ANZAC Day. I trust you
had some time to reflect and discuss
with your children the meaning of the
day. Some of our Year 6 Leadership
Group represented the school at the
Student ANZAC service at the Shrine
last week.
I had the pleasure of visiting South
Korea in the last part of the school
holidays and first week of term, for the
International Education Division of the
Department. I was representing
Primary Schools and was
accompanied by someone from a
Secondary School and the manager of
the unit. International students are an
aspect of education we don‟t always
consider, but is important to our
economy.
45% of enquires to study in Victoria
from Koreans are for places in Primary
Schools and up until now nobody from
a Primary school had visited Korea to
discuss this market. If a Primary
School student comes to study they
need to be living here with a parent or
grandparent. Because of our
relationship with Kumyang Elementary
School in South Korea, I was asked to
join the group and represent Victorian
Primary Schools. Over the 6 days we
visited 10 agents in their offices and

did presentations. We also attended a weekend International Student Information Fair open
to the public and conducted a special evening forum in conjunction with the Australian
Embassy in Seoul for agents and prospective parents. It was great to travel to South Korea
again, as I admire their culture and commitment to education and self improvement as an
individual and as a community. It also reinforced to me how highly regarded overseas is our
Victorian education system. Sometimes it is not until you step away and talk with others from
the outside that you realise we are very fortunate living in Victoria. Our media love to dwell on
the negative and what is not right, but we have very much to be thankful for with our
community and our way of life.
Planning is underway for our Senior Student Study Tour to South Korea at either the end of
term 3 or beginning of term 4 this year. Over the next few weeks we will be getting
information out to families of senior students.
As indicated last week in the newsletter our annual local Parent Survey is now available
online. The link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CHPS-PARENTS. The Link is
also available in the Parent Zone section of our website. Your feedback is important to us to
assist us in improving. We are in a year of review and will be developing our next 4 year
Strategic Plan in the 2 nd half of the year, so would welcome your comments.
This time of the year sees many students starting to take part in more contact sports. Mouth
Guards are really important for anyone taking part in these sports, but particularly so for
young people. There is very worthwhile information at http://www.mouthguardawareness.info/
With the rainy season upon us, we are again requesting parents to consider a pair of cheap
runners be left at school for use when the Stadium is used for PE. No matter how careful
students are, after playing outside their shoes have mud and grit in the tread, which is the
arch enemy of polished boards in our Stadium. We are not so fussed about the colour of the
sole as the black doesn‟t seem to be marking as we thought it would. Students without clean
shoes when the weather wet will participate in socks during their PE session if it is indoors.
Many parents have found shoes for around $20 which fit this purpose more than adequately.
Last week‟s newsletter contained the roster for parents supporting the informal morning teas
after Indoor Assemblies. These morning teas are an important part of strengthening our
school community and we look forward to as many parents and families as possible
participating.
AN EXCITING NEW BAND PROGRAM IN TERM 2 AT CHPS
This program will be made available to students who are already learning an instrument and
would like to learn how to play in a band with other children. Students will write and compose
their own music. They will also play and perform a number of „covers‟. Their music will be
recorded and they will have the opportunity to perform the songs in concerts, competitions
and at schools in front of other students, teachers & parents.
The program will run every Tuesday lunchtime in the PAC. We had our first rehearsal
and it was awesome!! The band have started learning “Living On A Prayer”- Bon Jovi
and hope to perform it soon.

If you are interested in trying out for this fabulous band program which will be run by “Wonnies” and Mrs Lane,
please pick up an enrolment form from the PAC and have it back to me as soon as possible. The cost and other
details are on the form. At this stage we are still looking for keyboard players, bass players and drummers
to have a balanced band.
VIOLIN LESSONS
I have had some parents enquire about violin lessons at the school. We have a couple of interested people, but
need a few more to make it viable to run lessons here. Again, please come and see me in the PAC or give me a
call if you would like some details.
CHOIR UNIFORMS
Choir members need to try their uniforms on from last year NOW and let me know whether you need a different
size. I will be fitting new choir members at lunchtime tomorrow and then ordering more uniforms. Children will
need to wear these at all choir performances throughout the year. If anyone still has a uniform and is no longer in
the choir, they need to return them immediately. Thank you.
