YEAR FOUR CAMP
Last week our Year four students had a wonderful
time at Camp Manyung. Our sincere thanks to the
staff and parents who attended the camp and
provided the students with such a wonderful
experience.

IPAD ONE TO ONE PROGRAM
On Wednesday 17th of October the Senior School teachers will be holding an iPad information and
feedback night for parents of students in senior classes. The night will be starting at 7:00 pm in the Senior
School.
We ask that you bring along your child’s iPad to allow you to participate in the session. We will be sharing
some of the work that Senior School students have created over the year as well as asking for parents to
give us feedback in relation to the one 2 one iPad program. We will be also providing more information on
security and safety on the iPad. If there is anything you would like us to address on the night could you
please contact your child’s classroom teacher before the ipad information night.
SEXTING
'Sexting' means sending sexually explicit photos or videos electronically (eg by mobile phone, app, chat,
social networking or email). With modern technology this can be done instantly, but it can have serious and
lasting consequences.
For people under 18, sexting is illegal. It is a criminal offence to take, possess, or transmit a naked
image of a person under the age of 18 years. It doesn’t matter if your child took their own photo and
willingly sent or published it. You cannot ‘give someone permission’ to break the law. Penalties for these
offences are very serious and can result in your child being placed on the sex offender’s register.
It is important that you regularly talk to your child about their experiences with communications technology.
Make sure that you continually reinforce that your child should come to you if they have any problems, if
they see something that they know is wrong or anything that upsets them.
KOREA TRIP
Reports from our students in Korea are that they are having a wonderful time. Students participated in a
homestay on the weekend and they had a great time. They also had a wonderful time at Everland, shown in
the photo below.
SLAPFACE
We have had several cases of Slapface reported in the school. There is an article about this condition later
in the newsletter.
Sports News
Well what a great term we have had again with so many sporting events happening. Once again,
congratulations to all the children who participated in the District Athletics and the success of the
Boys Netball Team. Thanks to Lucy McDaid who has had some stickers printed for the back of
their medals.
Next Term, we swing straight into the Maroondah Division Athletics on the first week of term, 11 th
October at Ringwood. For all those children who qualified for this, we wish you the best of luck.
The Interschool Sports teams who won their District Summer Competition will start to play the
finals for the Maroondah Division. Thank you again to all the parents for helping out with the
sports, whether it be scoring, coaching, umpiring or just being there to support the team.
We have also had huge Hooptime Teams competing with some of them progressing through to the
next stage in October. Mrs Karanzoulis, Mr Somers and Mr Den Elzen have put many hours of
work into getting these teams organised and fitted out with uniforms. It is great that so many
children get the opportunity to participate in a big event.
Tennis Clinic
Thank you to the Saliba family for coming along and conducting a fantastic Tennis clinic in the
stadium. They have worked with some of the Early Learning, Juniors and Middle school to teach
them some of the skills required to play the game. Next term they will also complete the Middle
School classes who have missed out.
Sports Uniforms
There are still many children with outstanding sports uniforms dating back to the Cross Country in
May as well as Interschool Sport tops, tops handed out for the Athletics Sports and competition
singlets. We are very fortunate to have the 2 different uniforms, but at the moment we are finding
that the students are just forgetting to bring them back or claiming they have, but it has not been
checked back in. Could I please ask all parents to also have a search, as these uniform are
expensive to replace. The borrowing system is based on numbers on the tags or in the case of
Soccer and Football Jumpers, numbers on the back. When these items are returned, they are
marked off and placed immediately back into their allocated boxes.
Music News
Celebrating the benefits of music education in
Australian schools
“Music Count Us In” is Australia’s biggest school initiative. With support from The Australian Government, it has run
since 2007 and is all about celebrating the value of music education to students’ development, whoever they are,
wherever they are. It involves more than 600,000 students, teachers - and often parents – from schools all over
Australia who sign up to learn, rehearse, then perform the same song, on the same day, at the same time.
Music: Count Us In is for all schools - primary and secondary, State and independent, nationwide. It doesn’t cost
anything for schools to participate and all the support materials, including song charts and arrangements and
classroom activity kits are freely available and downloadable.
Here is the “Music Count Us In” website for you to have a look at over the holidays. You will find the song “Different
People” in there as well as the previous songs and other information. Keep your eye on the countdown to our big day
on Thursday the 1 st of November when we all sing the same song at the same time all around Australia.
www.musiccountusin.org.au
What’s the performance date for this year?
Thursday, 1st November 2012, 11.30 a.m.
What are the benefits of learning music?
Decades of research shows that learning music can help students’ self-confidence, self-discipline, team work, it can
help to re-engage in school those students who might have lost interest, can improve school attendance and can
even help students make healthy life choices. PLUS there are strong links between music learning and academic skills
in literacy and numeracy. Research shows that music is UNIQUE in its flow-on benefits to students who learn it.
Here is a free, fun “app” for the holidays – “VidRhythm” – enjoy making your own crazy music videos!!
Don’t forget to join the “Specialists” Wiki and go onto performing arts/music
To all the CHPS music students and families, I hope you have a really lovely holiday. It has been a very busy term with
lots of performances and activities and you all deserve a nice relaxing holiday. See you first week back for choir,
ukulele band, rock band, and instrumental lessons. I’m looking forward to another great term of music activities and
performances culminating in our Christmas Concert on Wednesday the 12 th December at 7 p.m.
Helping kids make smart choices
Decision-making like anything requires practice.
Some children want to have a say about everything that involves them. They have no problem letting parents
know what they want and how life should be. Other children will avoid making decisions and will happily sit
back and follow the lead of others in anything from fashion to food eaten at dinner.
Most parents these days are keen to involve children in family decision-making processes. It is smart
management to get children’s input as they are more likely to stick to decisions when they have had a say.
It is challenging for parents to know when to make decisions for children and when to stand back and allow
them to decide. Decision-making in families is broken into three areas:
Parents Decide: these are decisions where there is no negotiation. e.g. going to school, bedtime (at certain
ages), mealtimes.
Work things out together: these are areas where you and your child negotiate outcomes. e.g. when to come
home from an outing, TV programs.
Kids Choose: give your children full authority within reason in some areas. e.g. choose the sport they play,
school activities, clothing
Each of these areas will vary according to parental values, the age of children and even individual
temperament. Some kids want a full say in everything and need to learn that not everything goes their way.
Others don’t want to make a decision for fear of making a poor choice. Both can be exasperating for parents.
Regular family meetings or get togethers provide terrific forums for parents and children to work things out
together. Outcomes are best negotiated in formal settings that ensure sufficient consideration is given.
Reward responsibility with greater freedom to choose
As children grow and show the ability to make sensible decisions allow them more authority over their lives.
Increasing independence involves greater freedom to choose, which demonstrates trust and faith in their
ability to make good decisions. But greater freedom to choose needs to be accompanied by an increase in
responsibility and also a willingness for them to experience the consequences of their decisions. Grounding a
child for being late home or removing rights to use a computer for a day if they overuse it maybe the best way
to remind kids that they have made poor choices! These consequences need to be seen as learning
opportunities not as punishments.
All decisions that children make have a consequence – whether positive or negative. A child can use the
following three questions to help him or herself assess consequences of a decision they may make. This is a
particularly useful guide as kids move into adolescence:
Is this behaviour safe for me?
Is this behaviour fair to others?
Is this behaviour smart and in my long-term best interests?
Children often can’t see the long-term consequences of their decisions so it’s useful to give them information
to help them make smart choices.
Also some children leap before they look. They need to be reminded to slow down and consider some of the
possible consequences of their actions.
WE VALUE YOUR INPUT
It is that time of the year where we ask parents
survey. This is our own initiative where we
endeavor to obtain feedback from parents on
various aspects of our school and its program.
It is important to us that we understand what
parents think so we continually improve. It will
take 10 – 15 minutes and is anonymous. We
look forward to reading your feedback. We
encourage as many responses as possible.
FACT SHEET from Royal Children’s Hospital
Slapped cheek or Fifth syndrome
‘Slapped cheek” os a viral infection caused by a virus called parvivirus B19. It is also called ‘fifth disease’ or erytherma
infectiosum.
Slapped cheek usually affects children between the ages of 4 and 10 but can happen at any age, even in adulthood.
Most inflections do not have any symptoms. Six out of ten people in the population have had the virus by the time
they are adults. It is not life threatening and complications are rare.
Signs and symptoms
Symptoms can take between 4 to 14 days to appear after getting the virus.
The symptons are usually so mild that many people don’t even know they have had the virus.
The first symptoms can include fever, headache, stomach upsets, aches and pains. This is the time when the virus
can be spread to others, mainly through saliva.
A bright red rash appears on the cheeks 3 to 7 days after getting the virus. The cheeks look like they have been
slapped, hence the name.
Your child may also have a different rash on the chest, back, arms and legs. The infection looks like a pink lace
pattern on the skin. The rash can come and go for several weeks, especially if the skin is exposed to sunlight or
after exercise.
Causes
Slapped cheek is caused by a virus called the human parvovirus B19. This is different from the parvovirus that is seen
in cats and dogs.
How is it spread?
Slapped cheek is spread by touching or breathing in the coughed or sneezed fluid drops from an infected person.
Treatment
Most children do not need any treatment except for resting and allowing the body to fight the infection. Fever may be
controlled with paracetamol. Antibiotics will not work because slapped cheek is caused by a virus.
At Home Care
Once you can see the rash on the face, children cannot spread the infection to others. Children can keep going to
school or daycare.
The Good Yarra Hills Safety House Committee represents Croydon Hills Primary School, Yarra
Road Primary School and Good Shepherd Primary School. We manage in excess of 100
houses in our area and run Yellow Days for our schools. The Committee comprises volunteer
parents from these three local schools.
I have been a member of the Committee for the last 8 years and now, due to our youngest
daughter finishing primary school at the end of the year, wish to resign in order to pursue other
interests. In order for Croydon Hills Primary to be part of this fabulous program, volunteers for
the Committee are desperately needed. I have loved being part of this program and have
shared some great times with the people I have met on the Committee. Several of our
members have friends with children at these three schools and find it a good way of keeping in
touch while doing something worthwhile. If you have friends at Yarra Road Primary or Good
Shepherd ring them as all three schools will placing similar ads for new Committee members.
It hasn’t been a huge commitment. We meet every second month at a coffee shop or our
houses. We have all had small children with us and this hasn’t posed a problem.
Please give me a ring if you think being part of this wonderful program interests you.
Unfortunately if we can’t get some new volunteers, then Croydon Hills Primary School will no
longer be a part of this program.
