CelebratingSuccess
SPECIAL PUBLICATION July 2009
Thrilled to have won
The Gordon McLean Award
A highly emotional
presentation with firsthand
accounts from
pregnant women affected
by substance misuse won
top award at this year’s
celebrating success event.
The project, SWANS (Support for
Women and Antenatal Serices), is a
partnership between the Trust and
Kirklees Council. It helps women who
are hidden from the system and do not
get vital help and support they need.
The group offers a one-stopshop
where women can get help
on a range of issues including
ante-natal advice, parenting skills
and help with housing issues.
The clients are also able to
make friends with other women
suffering similar problems.
Rather than say themselves
how effective the project had
been substance misuse liaison
midwife Janet Woodhouse and
children’s development worker
from Kirklees Council Hayley
Wimpenny invited two of the
women along to the presentations
They told judges about the help they
had received and how they had
felt listened to while visiting
the group on a regular basis.
After winning Janet
said: “It was the girls that
really made it, a lot of
people in the audience
said that they had felt
very emotional after
the presentation.
“We are really
thrilled to have won
and we don’t know
what we will do
with the money yet.”
Hayley added: “At the
moment we run the
sessions on goodwill
- we will be able to
buy some resources
and it will allow
the group to go
on a bit longer”
‘We are
really
thrilled to have
won and we
don’t know
what we will
do with the
money yet’
Involving patients is
key to improvement
A project to involve patients
in clinical audit was the winner
of the innovation category.
Samantha Saville, clinical
development facilitator,
headed the presentation which
posed the question: “Can
active patient involvement
really influence change”
Samantha described the project
as a partnership between clinical
audit and CAPRI (clinical audit
patient representation initiative).
She described a number of areas
where patients had been asked their
She said that clinical audit may
not always result in a change but
that it could be used to highlight
best practice in a particular area.
After winning the awards she
said: “We thought we had done
a good presentation and we
were happy with what we had
done and how it had all gone.
“We were thrilled and really
excited to have won – this is not just
us it has been a real team effort.”
Quality and
effectiveness
How would your life change if you had
a serious car accident this morning
This was the question from Janice
Carter, senior sister on ICU and winner of
the quality and effectiveness category.
The intensive care unit’s project to
offer follow-up clinics had started
in 2005 and since then had proved
hugely successful for patients.
Patients often suffered a whole raft of
problems following serious injury including
sleep problems, loss of memory and lack
of confidence or sexual dysfunctions.
The clinics are held every month at
Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and alternate
months at Calderdale Royal Hospital and
take place away from the ICU ward.
They give patients the opportunity
to come back into the hospital and
meet with staff to be given help and
support. This could be in the form of a
discussion about complex information or
being referred on to another service.
Jan said: “I am really thrilled that
we have won, I did not expect it and
it has been a real team effort.”
Winner:
Tina
MacNab
IT was the second win of the night for
the intensive care department when Tina
MacNab’s presentation entitled helping
the bereaved to grieve scooped the
improving service and delivery award.
Tina, who is the senior sister on
ICU, said the project which is based at
Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, had initially
started as a church service held in 2000 for
relatives to remember their loved ones.
It had however been recognised that
a service for people of all faiths was
needed and the idea had developed.
The service, which takes place every
18 months, allows relatives to talk with
staff and they can light a candle and take
away a pebble of remembrance. Tina
explained that as well as helping relatives
it also gave staff a feeling of closure.
She said she was really pleased to
have won, adding: “I did not think
we were going to win, it is very much
a team effort as everyone in the unit
contributes in one way or another.”
CelebratingSuccess 2009
A day to be proud of…
Opening the day the director of
nursing Helen Thomson said the event
was all about celebrating the hard
work that had gone on in the Trust.
Chairman Sukhdev Sharma
agreed saying as well as being
informative the day had also
Guest speaker: Harry Gration, left,
with John Naylor
been incredibly inspirational.
Broadcaster Harry Gration gave a
humorous but uplifting talk about
how taking risks could often lead to
success. He told the audience he had
struggled at school but with hard
work and determination managed
to train as a teacher only to give it
all up to become a broadcaster.
He asked the audience to
take away with them something
of his own philosophy.
“If you are not prepared to take risks
you will not achieve anything,” he said.
The audience was also given a
talk from Heather McClelland
and Amjid Mohammed about
their mission to China following
the earthquake in 2008.
The judges: Ray Collier, Liz
Richardson, Bernard Pierce
Charge nurse
Ian said the team’s entry had
been about developing a 24-hour
paediatric nurse practitioner led
assessment unit for children at
Huddersfield Royal Infirmary –
the journey from a proposal to
a working unit. “It was about
the journey,” said Ian. “It has
required a great deal of training
– three of us have done Masters
in advancing clinical practice
and four are working towards
it. The day you stop learning is
the day you retire. This award
is recognition for all the team
who have worked really hard.”
call centre environment for staff
which would meet the needs of
service users and looking after the
health and well-being of staff. She
said: “The girls will be absolutely
thrilled to bits to win this award.
The new centre has been a great
exactly that – getting back to
the fundamentals of nursing and
involving everyone on the ward
– matron to housekeeper. Cath
said: “It was all about using adult
learning skills and we are absolutely
exhilarated to have won – I’m still
in shock!” Michaela said: “This
has been about what is important
to patients. We’re really pleased
to have won as the standard
