Message from the President<br />

Another BUSY <strong>League</strong> year has begun.<br />

Provisionals have been busy with Camp Provisional<br />

and Repeat Boutique shifts. Holiday Happening<br />

Committee continues to work to build a successful<br />

event (no pressure!) and the Cookbook Committee<br />

seeks to find new avenues to sell our <strong>League</strong>’s<br />

cookbook.<br />

All the while, the Repeat Boutique Committee<br />

is working to increase sales and run the resale<br />

business.<br />

Camp Healthy Kids, a segment <strong>of</strong><br />

Kids in the Kitchen, was held in June<br />

at the YWCA and many children<br />

in our community were able to<br />

participate in the week’s events.<br />

Super Sellers have been out in the<br />

community asking businesses and individuals to<br />

contribute to our fundraiser. I know there are<br />

others <strong>of</strong> you who have already worked hard this<br />

summer on JLL business as well. To that I say,<br />

“thank you for making JLL a priority.”<br />

I heard a speaker a few years ago say, “To whom<br />

much is given, much is expected.” I think about<br />

that quote <strong>of</strong>ten. I know the members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Junior</strong><br />

<strong>League</strong> have been given much. We are all human<br />

and would love more, but we have so much to be<br />

thankful for — food on the table, friends to laugh<br />

and cry with and a home to sleep in and toss our<br />

stuff in as we head out the door in our vehicles!<br />

Whether the “expected” part<br />

is imposed by others or created<br />

by ourselves, we <strong>of</strong>ten do so much<br />

for others. It amazes me that we are a group <strong>of</strong><br />

women who raise money and contribute through<br />

our obligations then turn around and give to our<br />

community year after year. That speaks volumes to<br />

the character <strong>of</strong> the women <strong>of</strong> the JLL.<br />

I heard a preacher say something along the lines<br />

that this was not his church, but that it was our<br />

church.<br />

“... it does not read that it is my <strong>League</strong>.<br />

It belongs to all <strong>of</strong> us...”<br />

The same is true about the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Lubbock</strong>. I have a placement this year just like<br />

every member, every year. This year it happens<br />

to be President, and if you read my Duties and<br />

Responsibilities it does not read that it is my<br />

<strong>League</strong>. It belongs to all <strong>of</strong> us. So always feel free<br />

to speak to me about things you like or dislike<br />

about our organization because it is just that, our<br />

organization.<br />

I hope to see you at the October General Meeting<br />

on Monday, October 5. Social will begin at 6:30<br />

p.m., with a short meeting at 7 p.m. leading into<br />

another great “Done in a Meeting” project.<br />

Annual Planning and New Active Mentor Committee<br />

What Is Annual Planning<br />

Beth Hendricks, Annual Planning Chairman<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> you have already had me<br />

in attendance at your various committee meetings<br />

to complete an annual plan for your committee<br />

year, but I am sure some <strong>of</strong> you are still asking<br />

yourselves, “what exactly is an annual plan”<br />

The main purpose <strong>of</strong> annual planning is to<br />

encourage thinking about the organization’s big<br />

picture, to set goals and priorities, and to evaluate<br />

how well these objectives have been met.<br />

BE PROUD! A committment to goal setting and<br />

evaluation ensures continued success!<br />

An annual plan ensures that the <strong>League</strong> and its<br />

individual committees and councils are utilizing its<br />

resources effectively in working toward our overall<br />

mission: Promoting Voluntarism, Developing the<br />

Potential <strong>of</strong> Women and Improving the Community.<br />

As the Annual Planner for the<br />

<strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>, I am<br />

charged with coordinating annual<br />

planning meetings with all in-league committees<br />

and councils.<br />

At the start <strong>of</strong> the <strong>League</strong> year I assist with the<br />

formulation <strong>of</strong> their goals and objectives.<br />

I schedule a mid-year evaluation with each<br />

committee chairman to check on the progress<br />

toward their goals.<br />

Finally, I coordinate end-<strong>of</strong>-year<br />

transition meetings to assist with the<br />

evaluation <strong>of</strong> the past year.<br />

Lastly, I work with the Executive Board to formulate<br />

a long-range, three-year plan for the overall<br />

mission <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>. A copy<br />

<strong>of</strong> this plan can be found in the annual yearbook<br />

distributed at the first General Meeting <strong>of</strong> the year.<br />

<strong>League</strong>s all across the country see too many members resign soon after their<br />

Provisional year ends. This committee is a resource to help make the transition<br />

into active membership a little easier!<br />

Accountants, lawyers, graduate<br />

students, working moms and stay-at-home moms,<br />

this year’s provisional class represents the diverse<br />

walks <strong>of</strong> life that make up the the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>. However they got here, these women<br />

have come together to work hard at the Repeat<br />

Boutique and learn about agencies throughout the<br />

community, all while developing new friendships.<br />

Ask anyone who has been on the<br />

Holiday Happening Committee<br />

before and they will tell you it is the greatest<br />

placement in the <strong>League</strong>. If you got them alone<br />

though, they would probably tell you that it is not<br />

ALL fun. We have felt the stress six months into an<br />

intense nine months, but we just remind ourselves<br />

<strong>of</strong> WHY we are doing this. We are not doing this<br />

so we can say we were on the full committee,<br />

although we do love the aprons!<br />

We are doing this because <strong>of</strong> all the hungry<br />

children who get fed as a result <strong>of</strong> this hard work.<br />

We are doing this to help build<br />

Hope Lodge so families dealing with cancer will<br />

have a place to go.<br />

As you will see below, the money given to our<br />

community is immense. We are PROUD to tell<br />

people about the almost 1,000 children that we<br />

help feed every week and PROUD to tell people<br />

about working in the rain to help build Legacy<br />

Play Village. We are PROUD to tell people <strong>of</strong><br />

our involvement in the establishment <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Children’s Advocacy Center. We are PROUD <strong>of</strong> our<br />

involvement with the JLL!<br />

The Repeat Boutique is <strong>of</strong>f to an awesome start for the 2009-2010 year.<br />

Sales are increasing, Provisionals are working hard tagging the merchandise and both<br />

active and sustainer members are bringing us their donations. The committee is working hard putting<br />

in many hours to make the Repeat Boutique a success, but we are having fun too. Be looking for Repeat<br />

Boutique committee members — they will be styling fabulous new pink and black T-shirts, couture tote<br />

bags, and charming Repeat Boutique necklaces!<br />

TOY SALE: Make this Christmas a very merry Christmas for the children in<br />

our community. Please donate a new toy in its original packaging to the<br />

Repeat Boutique this upcoming holiday season and receive double quota<br />

credit for all toys donated.<br />

Second Time’s a<br />

Charm<br />

Last year’s committee was dedicated to improving<br />

membership awareness and increasing pr<strong>of</strong>its <strong>of</strong><br />

the Repeat Boutique. This year’s committee goal is<br />

to continue that focus. That is why “Second Time’s<br />

a Charm” is our theme for the 2009-2010 year. We<br />

know that the “second” year <strong>of</strong> continuing the<br />

efforts <strong>of</strong> last year’s committee along with some<br />

“charming” new ideas will in “time” enable the<br />

Repeat Boutique to generate the needed pr<strong>of</strong>its for<br />

the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong> to give back to our<br />

community.<br />

Food2Kids<br />

It is hard to believe that another<br />

school year has started. The 2009-2010 Food2Kids<br />

Committee is excited and ready to hit the ground<br />

running to support the elementary students <strong>of</strong><br />

the LISD schools that are participating in the<br />

F2K program this year. The summer was spent<br />

brainstorming<br />

and trying to find<br />

creative ways to get<br />

the information out<br />

about our program.<br />

On page 15, you will<br />

see an opportunity<br />

to help F2K by<br />

“sponsoring a sack.” Last year’s committee had a<br />

wonderful idea and our current committee is proud<br />

to launch it. For a one-time donation <strong>of</strong> $120, you<br />

will be able to sponsor one F2K sack for 40 weeks.<br />

It would be a blessing to generate enough funding<br />

with this opportunity to add additional schools<br />

later in the year.<br />

Though a new <strong>League</strong> year has started, I would like<br />

to brag on the success <strong>of</strong> last year’s committee. I<br />

am amazed at the amount <strong>of</strong> food products and<br />

volunteer hours that were donated by various<br />

organizations<br />

National Charity <strong>League</strong> and various Texas Tech<br />

University student organizations just to name a few.<br />

The list is long and I am humbled at the support<br />

that F2K is receiving.<br />

The F2K program started<br />

during the 2006-2007<br />

school year with five<br />

schools and 78 sacks the<br />

first week. By the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the year, there were<br />

nine schools participating<br />

with the highest sack count at 418. In 2007-2008<br />

we started with nine schools and 139 sacks the<br />

first week. At the end <strong>of</strong> that year, there were 13<br />

schools participating with the highest sack count<br />

at 721. The 2008-2009 school year started with 13<br />

schools and 256 sacks the first week. We ended the<br />

year with 17 schools participating and a high sack<br />

count <strong>of</strong> 987.<br />

While working a Repeat Boutique shift last spring,<br />

Cayce Kaufman made a comment that has stuck<br />

with me. I mentioned that I do not have children.<br />

Food 2 Kids Sack Sponsor<br />

Can you imagine what it would be like to go to bed hungry<br />

Thousands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong> children go without food every weekend.<br />

Thanks to the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>’s Food2Kids<br />

program, almost 950 children each weekend are going<br />

to bed with fuller tummies.<br />

Now in its fourth year, Food2Kids works with <strong>Lubbock</strong><br />

ISD to target elementary school children who are fed<br />

primarily in the school lunchroom Monday through<br />

Friday, but who go hungry on the weekends at home.<br />

Each week, <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> volunteers stuff sacks <strong>of</strong><br />

food and distribute these sacks to children at school on Friday afternoons.<br />

The program has seen tremendous growth. Since September 2007, Food2Kids has increased food sack<br />

distribution by 700 children!<br />

With this tremendous demand, Food2Kids needs your support so that no child is denied.<br />

For a one-time donation <strong>of</strong> $120, you can sponsor a year’s worth <strong>of</strong> food sacks for one child. This will<br />

provide a year <strong>of</strong> sacks to a hungry child every week during the 40-week school year.<br />

Over the years, Food2Kids has received numerous thank-you letters from those we are helping. A<br />

9-year-old third grader named Denise wrote, “Whenever you send me food, it puts me in a good mood.<br />

It puts a smile on my face.” One elementary school parent wrote, “The food has helped me when there<br />

was no more food.”<br />

I am so excited to be chairing<br />

Membership Enrichment this year! I can’t believe<br />

how fast the summer flew by and now we have<br />

kicked <strong>of</strong>f the 2009-2010 <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> year! It is<br />

going to be a fabulous year, and the Membership<br />

Enrich ment Committee already has several projects<br />

in the works.<br />

This year’s “Done in a Meeting” project will supply<br />

the children with a bag <strong>of</strong> new socks and a pair<br />

<strong>of</strong> mittens sometime in October or November.<br />

We are ask ing Actives, Provisionals, and Sustainers<br />

to donate items for this project. We need bags <strong>of</strong><br />

socks and mittens (children’s sizes). The challenge<br />

is we have VERY little time to collect these items!<br />

The Warm Hearts, Warm Hands and Feet Campaign<br />

is this year’s “Done in a Meeting Project,” and is<br />

once again focusing on our Food2Kids program.<br />

At the October General Meeting on October 5, we<br />

will begin as usual at 6:30 p.m. with social, and at<br />

7 p.m. we will conduct an abbreviated business<br />

meet ing. Immediately following, everyone will be<br />

divided into small groups at round tables, and we<br />

will stuff our warm hearts into Ziploc bags for the<br />

children in our community.<br />

If you would like<br />

to simply do nate money for our committee<br />

to purchase socks and mittens that would be<br />

wonderful as well.<br />

Why do we do what we do Well the answer<br />

is simple. We are committed to children. These<br />

kids don’t have the necessities to endure the<br />

winter months such as new socks and mittens to<br />

Cookbook<br />

At our very first<br />

meeting in June, the committee<br />

discussed the sale <strong>of</strong> cookbooks to<br />

Provisionals at length and agreed that<br />

it was time for a new plan. Knowing<br />

that the cookbook is a fundraiser for<br />

the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>, we<br />

could not let it lose any money. We<br />

put our heads together and went to<br />

the Executive Committee with a new<br />

strategy for this year.<br />

During the past two years, the<br />

Cookbook Committee has worked<br />

hard to trade our books with other<br />

<strong>League</strong>s. Now, for the first time since the cookbook<br />

was published, Provisionals will be able to buy<br />

any book that the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong> has<br />

in stock. Since we have a few books that are<br />

less expensive than ours, our plan asks that they<br />

purchase books at the one-time price <strong>of</strong> $145 or<br />

the paid-out price <strong>of</strong> $163 for the year. This is no<br />

this possibility and for the chance to promote all<br />

<strong>League</strong>s that have taken a chance with a cookbook.<br />

Kids in the Kitchen is a signature<br />

project <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>. This<br />

project was developed in conjunction with the<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong>s International in<br />

response to the growing need to educate our<br />

youth about the implications <strong>of</strong> childhood obesity.<br />

This is only the fourth year that JLL has been<br />

implementing this project. In essence, we are still<br />

in the infancy <strong>of</strong> the impact potential we have to<br />

reach out to the <strong>Lubbock</strong> community with this<br />

important issue.<br />

My goal as chairman <strong>of</strong> KIK is to <strong>of</strong>fer several<br />

events throughout the year. We started this summer<br />

with “Camp Healthly Kids.” This was a half-day,<br />

week-long camp in June for girls ages 7-11. Yvette<br />

Foshee was the Camp Leader and in conjunction<br />

with her outstanding committee (Sandi Buchanan,<br />

Wendy Buchheit, Whitney Miller, LuAnn Neal, and<br />

Cathi Rayburn) had an extremely successful event.<br />

More than 45 girls attended this event which took<br />

place at the YWCA. The girls learned about the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> healthy eating, adequate exercise,<br />

and general health and well being. There are so<br />

many young girls in our community who could<br />

benefit from a camp like this. My hope is that next<br />

year we can expand this event even further.<br />

than in years past. We will be extending our<br />

efforts in the north and east sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>. In<br />

conjunction with community partners and United<br />

Supermarkets, we plan to have these events focus<br />

on the value <strong>of</strong> good nutrition and the benefits <strong>of</strong><br />

making healthy choices.<br />

Our last event <strong>of</strong> the year will be Saturday, March<br />

6, 2010 in collaboration with Covenant Children’s<br />

Hospital and United Supermarkets. This funfilled,<br />

half-day event will take place at Covenant’s<br />

Knipling Education Center. At this event we have<br />

the opportunity to reach an even larger group <strong>of</strong><br />

children.<br />

Stay tuned to hear more about this year’s KIK<br />

theme and the activities planned to continue the<br />

efforts toward reducing childhood obesity in our<br />

community.<br />

To understand the Community<br />

Council, it helps to look at who makes up the<br />

team. This year, our members are: Dawne Franks,<br />

Food2Kids Chairman; Lisa Johnson, Kids in the<br />

Kitchen Chairman; Shannon Kirkland, Placement<br />

Vice President; Angela Laughlin, Finance Vice<br />

President; Stacey Siefken Hinkle, Member at Large<br />

B; Susan Vasquez, Research and Development<br />

Chairman; Virginia Dorton, Sustaining Adviser and<br />

Ellen Wallace, Community Vice President.<br />

As you can see by the titles <strong>of</strong> each member on this<br />

council, each has her own responsibilities to the<br />

<strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong> in addition to sitting on<br />

Community Council. Thanks to the commitment<br />

<strong>of</strong> these ladies, we are able to accomplish an<br />

incredibly important task. We determine how the<br />

<strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>’s money is spent.<br />

Through Community Assistance Grants, we<br />

encourage non-pr<strong>of</strong>it agencies to apply for a share<br />

<strong>of</strong> the $30,000 total. This year grant funds will be<br />

awarded three times, dispersing $10,000 each time.<br />

Our remaining application deadlines for 2009-2010<br />

are: Friday, November 20, 2009, and Friday, March<br />

12, 2010. To apply for this grant, they can simply<br />

Community Shift Update and Advisory Planning<br />

As the school year begins, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

agencies across the community begin<br />

scheduling events and fundraisers. We as <strong>Junior</strong><br />

<strong>League</strong> members <strong>of</strong>ten have the opportunity to<br />

assist these organizations by providing volunteers<br />

who help make these events successful. We are<br />

always accepting applications from agencies that<br />

meet these three basic criteria:<br />

• Must have a 501(c)3 tax designation<br />

• Projects must meet a community need in<br />

<strong>Lubbock</strong> County with clearly stated goals<br />

and objectives.<br />

• Projects must embrace the spirit <strong>of</strong> the JLL<br />

Mission Statement.<br />

You can log on to the JLL Web site and download<br />

an application if you know a worthy organization.<br />

Did you know that the <strong>Junior</strong><br />

<strong>League</strong> has a committee whose sole purpose<br />

is to study topics presented by the President<br />

and the Executive Board in order to improve<br />

our organization It’s the Advisory Planning<br />

Committee, and I am so excited to serve as its<br />

chairman this year!<br />

Even though you may not be familiar with our<br />

committee, I bet you are familiar with some <strong>of</strong> its<br />

recommendations: forming an Associate Active<br />

Placement, creating a Membership Council, or not<br />

requiring members to resign at age 40.<br />

Community Shifts<br />

Helpful pointers for completing<br />

your community or volunteer choices shifts:<br />

• Please remember that there is no guarantee<br />

that shifts will be available every month <strong>of</strong><br />

the year.<br />

• Available shifts <strong>of</strong>ten fill up months in<br />

advance, so don’t wait until the last minute<br />

to sign up!<br />

• If you do not make it to your scheduled<br />

shift, you will have to make the missed shift<br />

up, plus work an extra shift!<br />

• Always arrive early to your shift to make<br />

sure you are at the right place and that you<br />

get credit for your shift.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the issues Advisory<br />

Planning will research this year<br />

involve the following topics:<br />

• The Member-at-Large (MAL) placement<br />

• The <strong>Junior</strong> <strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>’s Foundation<br />

• The council and committee rotation system<br />

• The Provisional Course<br />

Advisory Planning will soon begin studying these<br />

issues and will make recommendations to the<br />

Executive Board before the end <strong>of</strong> the <strong>League</strong> year.<br />

Our efforts shows how much the Executive Board cares about its<br />

membership and the future <strong>of</strong> our organizations — something we should<br />

all be very proud <strong>of</strong>!<br />

In my pr<strong>of</strong>essional life, I am an<br />

attorney whose practice primarily encompasses<br />

incorporating businesses and advising small<br />

companies. The question <strong>of</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong><br />

bylaws is not an uncommon<br />

one.<br />

Bylaws are the written<br />

rules for conduct <strong>of</strong> an<br />

organization. Bylaws<br />

generally provide for<br />

meetings, elections <strong>of</strong> a<br />

board <strong>of</strong> directors and<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers, filling vacancies,<br />

notices, types and duties<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers, committees,<br />

assessments and other<br />

routine conduct. Bylaws<br />

are in effect a contract<br />

among members and must<br />

be formally adopted and/or<br />

amended.<br />

For members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Junior</strong><br />

<strong>League</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lubbock</strong>, Inc.,<br />

the Bylaws and Policies<br />

provide a framework and<br />

structure for efficient and<br />

effective operations <strong>of</strong> our<br />

organization. As a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

organization, the Bylaws also<br />

ensure that the organization does not lose its taxexempt<br />

status with the Internal Revenue Service<br />

by engaging in activities that conflict with the laws<br />

governing non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations.<br />

While my general advice to the owners <strong>of</strong> a small<br />

family-owned business or sole proprietorship is to<br />

very necessary to have rules in<br />

place for smooth government<br />

and effective operation.<br />

The general consensus may be that this part <strong>of</strong><br />

organization is dull and boring, however, bylaws<br />

should be viewed as a necessary evil. As the JLL<br />

starts this fiscal year, take the opportunity to refresh<br />

your memory as to the bylaws and policies <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>League</strong>. They are available on the JLL Web site.<br />
