Message from the President
The Positive Side of Hope
Melanie Ragain, President
Hope. Hope is a word to describe two
outcomes; one wished for and positive in nature,
and one not wanted but that must be dealt with if
the positive outcome is not achieved. To me, the
word “hope” has two possibilities; either it will or it
will not; a positive or a negative result.
I have realized that I use the word “hope” quite
often. Maybe it’s the season of “hope”; “hope”for
cures and preventions, “hope”
for Texas Tech team success, or
“hope” in reflection as the year
draws to a close.
“Hope” is a great word. It can be
used to show someone what you
feel, desire, or believe without
having to explain, defend, or show
supporting research to back up
the statement.
I “hope” it doesn’t rain because
he has a soccer game.
I “hope”I have enough gas to make it to the gas
station.
I “hope” they can come to town for a visit.
The positives of those statements are they happen
the way I “hoped”.
It didn’t rain, so he had a game.
I made it to the gas station on vapor!
give hope
They came to Lubbock and we had a great
weekend.
“... The Junior
League of
Lubbock delivers
the positive
outcome of ‘Hope’
and gives ‘Hope”
to so many...”
Then there is the more negative
side of “hope”, the outcome that
you deal with while looking for the
bright side of the situation:
If it rains we can have a quiet night at home. We
do need to slow down.
If I run out of gas, I will call a friend who has
probably done the same thing. I can’t call my
husband, because I will never hear the end of it!
If they don’t come this weekend at
least the house will be clean, sort-of!
The negative side. Not what I desired,
but dealt with. And what a surface
usage of the word “hope” that I tend to
use on a daily basis as I check off my todo
list and daily agenda.
But”hope” is so much more. “Hope” to
me is something that we do not have
much control of when we desire a
“positive” outcome in our favor.
“Hope” can be given. Sure. We have all met someone
who use to be where we are and they survived, or
advanced, or persevered. And most of us have said
to someone, “Oh, thank you for sharing your story.
You give me ‘hope.”
The Junior League of Lubbock delivers the positive
outcome of “hope” and gives “hope” to so many.
We “hope” that we can find a place to stay when
we go to Lubbock for his cancer treatment.
Positive side of “hope”: $10,000
Message from the President Continued & Meet Michelle
The Positive Side of Hope
(continued)
I “hope” I have enough food to get the kids
through the rest of the month.
I “hope” I don’t go to bed hungry tonight.
I “hope” my students are ready to learn on
Monday and are not hungry so they can focus on
school work.
Positive side of “hope”: $74,000
Giving “Hope”: Food2Kids
We “hope” she learns to make better food choices.
We really “hope” he doesn’t develop Type II
Diabetes, he is only 9 years old.
Positive side of “hope”: $8,000
Giving “hope”: Kids in the Kitchen
The Board “hopes’”we can stay within our budget
even with the unexpected repairs needed.
I sure “hope” that we can get the money from
somewhere.
Positive side of “hope”: $30,000
Giving “hope”: Community Assistance Grants
We asked for five volunteers. I “hope” that they all
show up because we really need some assistance.
Positive side of “hope”: Priceless!
Giving “hope”: Community Shift
I know college is expensive. I “hope” I can help pay
for my college expenses.
Positive side of “hope”: $2,500
Giving “hope”: Young Women Building Better
Communities Scholarship
Think about how many times you use the word
“hope”. Then think about how you bring the
positive side of “hope”— the answer wished for, to
someone (lots of someones!) in our community.
I “hope” you see and continue to help be the
positive side of “hope’’. Thank you for being a
member of JLL or supporting JLL. It’s because of
you that we can continue to give “hope.”
Provisional Membership Development Committee (PMDC)
The 2009-2010 CAMP Provisional took
place on June 20, 2009 at JLL Headquarters. It
was a fun day of team building and information
assimilation for the group. The day began with
breakfast and an icebreaker. Once the women
got to know one another, they were informed
about the various aspects of the
League. After a few team building
activities and a yummy lunch, the
ladies set about their first task
in League. They developed their
Provisional T-shirt … and they
did not disappoint! The 2009-
2010 Provisional T-shirt is League
purple with a graphic of Rosie the
Riveter and the slogan “We Can
Do It.” It definitely summed up
the work ethic of the class!
During the course of the summer
the ladies worked diligently to
get the RB in shape. Before July
was over, the whole back room was completely
cleaned out and all orders had been worked. In
September they completed their first turn stock
and the RB looks wonderful! Even though they
work hard they also like to have a little fun. Since
no July meetings were scheduled, Dawne Franks
organized a fantastic social for the ladies at the
Llano Winery. We were given a thorough tour of the
facilities and allowed to taste several of its finest
selections and snack on cheese and crackers. It was
PMDC: Halfway There!
Amy Stephens, PMDC Chairman
It is hard to believe
that we are already
halfway through
the 2009-2010
provisional year—
and I am constantly
amazed by the
dedication of this
provisional class!
a wonderful time for all and
great opportunity for the ladies
to bond in a social setting.
As the fall season has rolled around the ladies have
begun their Provisional Course in earnest. They
have toured the Ronald McDonald
House, the Food2Kids warehouse
location, the South Plains Food
Bank, and took a video tour of
the Women’s Protective Services
Shelter. Next they toured the
Children’s Advocacy Center and
the Holiday Happening event. They
also have had the opportunity
to attend several council and
committee meetings and are
gaining a deeper understanding
of all that our League does in the
community!
The Provisional Membership
Development Committee has worked very hard
to ensure a positive experience for the 2009-2010
Provisional Class. The PMDC committee is: Natalie
Barnes, Sarah Cypert, Lori Dudley, Bernadette
Granger, Erin Gregg, Tamara Mancini, Nichole
Shanklin, Karina Stults, Bethany Tibbetts, Dawn
Renee Wright, Kristie Franklin (Coordinator), Laura
(Chairman). We are pleased to welcome Gayle
Public Relations
Congratulations — 20 Under 40
Carol Robertson, Public Relations Chairman
The Junior League of Lubbock is made
up of phenomenal women who do great things
every day to make a difference in the lives of
others in the community of Lubbock. Whether
you volunteer at your child’s school, excel in your
career or give countless hours of volunteer time to
help local non-profits — we are making a positive
difference in our community. Most of these deeds
go without much recognition.
Much like the Junior League, Young Professionals of
Greater Lubbock is a group of active, civic-minded
kelli childre
professionals who see Lubbock
as a great place to live, work,
and play. For the third year, YPGL has
chosen 20 individuals to receive the 20 Under 40
Award. This exciting initiative aims to recognize
outstanding individuals under the age of 40 who
exemplify leadership in their careers, while actively
participating in the community.
Of the 12 women recognized with the 20 Under 40
award for 2009, THREE are members of the Junior
League of Lubbock! Congratulations!
Kelli Childre has been a member of JLL since 2004 and she is currently the Publicity Chairman for Holiday
Happening. Kelli is the associate director of public relations at Lubbock Christian University.
On being a civic-minded young professional in Lubbock Kelli said, “I think the Junior League of Lubbock
has provided me with a wonderful network of other professionals as well as volunteer opportunities in
the community. It also allows me to connect people back to my employer, Lubbock Christian University,
through other member’s professions that gives both of us a winning situation.”
holly kennedy
Holly Kennedy has been a member of JLL since 2007 and is currently placed as PR/Solicitations for Kids
in the Kitchen. Holly is the media relations coordinator for Covenant Health System.
Holly said, “The Junior League of Lubbock has provided me the opportunity to give back to a community
who has given so much to me. As a member, I am surrounded by some of the most amazing and talented
women the South Plains has to offer. This award is in honor of all the amazing women who give so much
of their time to benefit the people of the South Plains.”
On her recent recognition Sunshine said, “The Junior League has provided me with a unique opportunity
for voluntarism and education, outside of my daily work at the District Attorney’s office. I have really
Organizational Development Institute Recap
ODI: If 2 Heads are Better ...
Mary Myers, Public Relations Chairman
It is amazing the power of team-based
strategic thinking. Recently, JLL sent three members
to Las Vegas, Nev. to participate in an annual
Organization Development Institute with other
League members from around the country.
Organizers offered a well thought-out team of four
educational tracks, each focusing on an important
area that Leagues currently need to focus on.
Each of us attended a separate track and came
out of each with a refreshed excitement for the
future of our League. Below is a quick “take away”
snapshot of what we learned. In the coming
months, we will be presenting our information and
thoughts for the future to our League leadership.
Achieving Community Impact: Identifying and
Building Powerful Community Projects
Making a community impact is an integral part of
the Junior League Mission. To make an effective
impact in our community, we have to make sure
our members understand and model our Mission
in all that we do; including conveying this Mission
to those in the community we work with — our
community partners.
Take-away message from Kathleen Burrell:
Make sure our members truly know and
understand our Mission, and have our League relate
ALL activities back to fulfilling this mission.
Diversified Fund Development: From
Fundraising to Comprehensive Funding
In the ODI segment devoted to fundraising
development we discussed various methods of
fundraising and spent a great deal of time on how
to develop a donor base, and why we need to
have a strategic plan for funding our Junior League
projects. We shared fundraising ideas with other
Leagues from across the country,
and learned strategies to make our fundraisers
more
successful.
Take-away
message
from Kristi
Lowe: We are,
indeed, in the
business of
fundraising.
As such,
we are
responsible
for bringing
in the dollars
needed to
fund our
projects.
Live the Mission,
Commit to fundraising,
Be an advocate for our
projects and events;
use the time and
talents of each other
wisely ...
our path to the
strongest League we
can be!
share
Equally important; we MUST be great advocates for
the projects we sponsor.
Membership Development: Creating
Tomorrow’s Community Leaders
The pillars of membership retention are identified
as: Recruitment, Orientation, Maintenance &
Support, Mentoring & Coaching and Education &
Development.
If attention and strategic planning efforts are put
forth to each of these pillars, the outcome is a wellrounded,
valuable membership experience for
League women. It breeds commitment and lifelong
membership which can only make our impact
greater in our community.
Take-away message from Mary Myers: Make
the membership experience valuable for League
women. Use their time and talents wisely and
ensure that they are making a difference.
Community Assistance Grant Awards
Grants Presented to 5 Agencies
Ellen Wallace, Community Vice-President
C ommunity Council met at the end
of September and reviewed all of the Community
Assistance Grant applications. We were excited to
review the applications and have the opportunity
to assist non-profit agencies within the Lubbock
community. Much to our satisfaction, we were able
to grant monies to all of the applicants.
The non-profit agencies receiving money from
the Junior League of Lubbock, Inc. are as follows:
Building Strong Families, Inc., Llano Estacado Silver
Star Board, CASA of the South Plains, Inc., Martin
Early Childhood School, and Ronald McDonald
House Charities of the Southwest.
Building Strong Families, Inc. received
$1,500 to help offset the expense of the
Civic Center for their annual conference.
Llano Estacado Silver Star Board received
$2,000 to help fund home heating safely
for the elderly and disabled.
CASA of the South Plains, Inc. received
$1,499.96 to purchase furniture for their
new observation and visitation rooms.
Martin Early Childhood School received
$2,000 to produce wooden bookshelves
for the children participating in the Home
Literacy Program.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the
Southwest received $1,500 for the Adopt-a-
Room program.
Many of you wonder how this works; how does
the Junior League of Lubbock, Inc. get to play Santa
Claus and give gifts (money) to non-profit agencies
We have three fundraisers currently in progress:
The Repeat Boutique, The Junior League Cookbook
— “A Perfect Setting,” and our much loved Holiday
Happening. The money raised through these three
endeavors gives the Junior League of Lubbock,
Inc. funds to give within our
community. Those of you who
have shopped at the Repeat Boutique or have
donated items to the Repeat Boutique — you
too have given to your community. Those of you
who have purchased “A Perfect Setting” cookbook,
you have given to these agencies. Thirdly, those
of you who have purchased a ticket to any event
at Holiday Happening — you are giving to the
community.
Once these three fundraisers have made their
money, the money is put into an account and
waits to be donated to non-profit agencies within
the Lubbock community. Community Council
has the great responsibility of reviewing all of the
Community Assistance Grants and making the
decisions of who receives money and how much
money they receive. Following the vote from the
Community Council, the Community Vice President
takes the motions to the Executive Board. Once
the Executive Board reviews the motions, they too
vote and then the money is granted to the agencies.
The only way the Junior League of Lubbock,
Inc. is able to give to these agencies is through
the donations we receive through our three
fundraisers. The next time you have some gently
used clothes in your closet you would like to
donate to someone, please think of the Repeat
Boutique. All of us have friends and family who
need gifts throughout the year, think about buying,
“A Perfect Setting,” the Junior League of Lubbock,
Inc. cookbook, or simply buy a ticket and attend an
event at Holiday Happening. By doing one of the
above, you will be able help the Junior League of
Lubbock, Inc. continue to do what we love to do —
giving to our community.
Hope Lodge Update
Hope Lodge Lubbock Goal $500,000
During Community-Wide Campaign
Mikell Bollinger, American Cancer Society
Since August 23, the generosity of
local media and donors helped the American
Cancer Society raise almost $500,000 during
the community-wide campaign to support Hope
Lodge Lubbock. This brings the overall funding for
construction and three years of operational support
for Hope Lodge almost to completion.
The American Cancer Society launched the
community-wide campaign with hopes to raise
the remaining $500,000 by Sept. 30 to secure a
$1 million challenge grant, making the overall
total $11 million to complete construction. By the
end of September, less than $75,000 remained to
reach that goal. This remarkable achievement was
recognized by the challenge grant donor
24 • The Junior League of Lubbock
who extended the deadline for the offer to mid-
November. The goal is expected to be reached next
week.* The Junior League of Lubbock has pledged
$50,000 to Hope Lodge Lubbock and will have a
patient suite named in honor of its contribution.
The Lubbock Lodge will be the first in Texas and
the first located outside a major metropolitan area
anywhere in the United States. The 32-room facility
will include private guest rooms, kitchen and
laundry facilities, dining room, library, and prayer
room.
To build Hope Lodge Lubbock and sustain its
operation, ACS must raise a grand total of $15
home
million.
*Editor’s Note: In an
ongoing fundraising
project like this,
publishing timely
information is very
difficult. As of November
16, ACS has reached
their initial fundraising
goal! To sustain Hope
Lodge’s operations for
the long term, the society
must raise an additional
$4.5 million to complete
the campaign’s ultimate
goal of $15 million. Help
make a gift to Hope Lodge
Lubbock.

A Different Way to Support JLL
Natalie Barnes, Foundation Development
The Junior League of Lubbock,
Inc. Foundation was established to provide
funding to support the Junior League of Lubbock,
Inc. Supporting the foundation is another great
way to give back to the League, and in turn, the
community. The Foundation operates two funds,
the Endowment Fund and the Headquarters Fund.
The Endowment Fund was created to provide
support to community projects adopted by the
Junior League of Lubbock, Inc. This fund can help
the League in funding our community projects
in case of emergencies or budget shortfalls. This
fund could be very helpful if the League realized
we needed more funds to support our current
community projects.
The Headquarters Fund was created to provide
spending for capital improvements, furnishings and
maintenance of the facilities of the Junior League
of Lubbock, Inc. If our Headquarters was in need
give
of general maintenance or necessary upgrades,
then this fund could provide this to the League’s
The Training committee has spent
the last several months preparing “Back to the
Basics” JLL refresher courses to our members
during our monthly general meetings.
With the help of our guest star host, Linda “Leno,”
we have been busy helping our members sharpen
up their JLL skills.
During the September general meeting, we went
“JLL Walking” with Linda “Leno” and asked members
questions such as: When was the JLL organized
When did the JLL become a member of AJLI
Training
Linda Landin, Training Chairman
Foundation and Training
Headquarters, rather than having
to use the League’s budgeted
funds that could be used for our community
projects.
Both of these funds must reach $250,000 before
the earnings can be used for the specified needs.
Neither fund has met this goal yet, which is why it
is important for us to attempt to reach our goals to
plan for our League’s financial future.
The Foundation’s Board of Directors is made of
Actives, Sustainers and community members. The
Board oversees the management of investments
and potential distribution of funds.
These tax-deductible donations will help sustain
our League for future generations and create
security for the League’s financial future. Donations
will be designated to either the Headquarters or
Endowment fund by the donor, member or nonmember,
so please consider donating to the JLL
Foundation.
At the October general meeting,
Linda “Leno” returned and hosted
a game show called “Are You Smarter than a Junior
Leaguer” We had three lovely JLL contestants who
answered challenging questions such as: What is a
not-for-profit-organization What is the Pat S. Moore
Award How many times is the In League published
in a year
learn
Holiday Happening Etiquette was our Back to the
Basics topic during our November General meeting.
A team of members presented the Do’s and Don’ts
of Holiday Happening. Stay tuned for more!
Food2Kids
In this season of giving thanks and
celebrating, Food2Kids wants to share with you
some thank-you from our children and their
teachers and some dreams of our members.
Food2Kids
Dawne Franks, Food2Kids Chairman
I see in five years
the Junior League of
Lubbock being able to
supply all the schools in
Lubbock that need our
assistance. In 10 years I
see us being able to feed
all the schools in our
outlining counties.
Libby White, JLL member
I teach at a high school
level and I still see the faces
of starving kids, I would
love to see Food2Kids
extended to all those in
need not just at the child
age, but at the adolescent
age as well.
Erica Graves, JLL member
I wish that you could see my kids
faces when they get their bag of
food on Friday! They are so excited
and you can see the relief on their
faces when they take it home.
These children’s families are
struggling to make it. This bag of
groceries is such a blessing to them
to know that there is a little extra
for their children.
Your kindness is shown to them
every week and although you
probably don’t get thanked enough,
please know that Food2Kids is very
much appreciated!
God bless you,
Food 2 Kids Sack Sponsor
Food2Kids Sack Sponsor Form
Can you imagine what it would be like to go to bed hungry
Thousands of Lubbock children go without food every weekend.
Thanks to the Junior League of Lubbock’s Food2Kids
program, almost 950 children each weekend are going
to bed with fuller tummies.
Now in its fourth year, Food2Kids works with Lubbock
ISD to target elementary school children who are fed
primarily in the school lunchroom Monday through
Friday, but who go hungry on the weekends at home.
Each week, Junior League volunteers stuff sacks of food and distribute these sacks to children at school
on Friday afternoons.
The program has seen tremendous growth. Since September 2007, Food2Kids has increased food sack
distribution by 700 children!
With this tremendous demand, Food2Kids needs your support so that no child is denied.
For a one-time donation of $120, you can sponsor a year’s worth of food sacks for one child. This will
provide a year of sacks to a hungry child every week during the 40-week school year.
Over the years, Food2Kids has received numerous thank-you letters from those we are helping. A
9-year-old third grader named Denise wrote, “Whenever you send me food, it puts me in a good mood.
It puts a smile on my face.” One elementary school parent wrote, “The food has helped me when there
was no more food.”
Please consider sponsoring a year’s worth of food sacks for a Food2Kids child. Your donation could be
the difference in a child’s bedtime dreams.
Yes! I want to make a donation of $120
Please accept a general donation of
to sponsor a year of food sacks for one child. $
