Conference
in Monetary
and Financial
Economics

The Centre for Global Finance
at the Faculty of Business
and Law hosted a national
conference for PhD students
on 20 September on the
theme of Monetary and
Financial Economics, sponsored
by the Royal Economic
Society. PhD students from
universities across the UK
presented their work and
received valuable feedback
from Centre discussants
and other attendees. The
conference attracted an
insightful plenary presentation
from the distinguished Oxford
economist, Professor Sir
David Hendry on the topic of
Empirical Model Discovery.
The proceedings also included
practitioner talks from Louise
Fleming, Head of South
West Region at Barclays, on
the topic of Managing a
Career in Finance, and Steve
Taylor, Senior Consultant,
the Chartered Institute for
Securities and Investment
on Integrity and Ethics in
Financial Services.
The Centre for Global
Finance is well placed to
support doctoral events as
its reputation for excellent
research in the area of
global finance grows. The
Centre has now grown to
39 members, 10 of whom
are research students. Its
expertise spans corporate
finance and financial markets,
international monetary
systems and financial
institutions, international
corporate financial reporting,
and governance and
accountability in financial
services.

this year UWE staff
are always fantastic
at supporting this
collection for the Julian
Trust homeless shelter.
We are collecting
food, toiletries and
other items (there is a
list of acceptable and
non acceptable items).
There is a central
collection point on
every UWE campus.

Supporting the Julian Trust homeless shelter
Volunteer for
Caring at Christmas
Goody boxes collected last Christmas
Can you volunteer a bit of your time for
a homeless shelter over the Christmas
period More than 10 chefs and in excess
of 400 volunteers contribute their time
over the week.
Sian Lamphrey, Caring at Christmas
co-ordinator, said, “Volunteers help prepar
the kitchens and offer friendship to the people who come to the
shelter by talking to them and playing games.”

Jim Bealey who works as a technician in BIT at UWE and volunteers for Caring
at Christmas said, “I was a bit hesitant at first but I enjoy it so much. It’s a great
feeling to be giving something back and there is a wonderful family of people
involved and the guests are all really good and appreciate what we do.”
