Pathway 2: TOLERANCE AND DISCRIMINATION
Over the centuries, Jews, as members of a religious and ethnic
minority, have encountered both tolerance and discrimination.
During the more than two thousand years in which they have
resided outside their own land, Jews have often enjoyed acceptance
and have participated extensively in the societies in which
they live. In modern times, they have gradually gained civil rights
in many countries. The possibility of integration has confronted
Jewish society with new challenges, as well as opportunities.
Throughout history, Jews have also been subject to discrimination,
isolation, and even violent persecution. Anti-Jewish attitudes
have developed new forms over time: whereas, in medieval times,
anti-Jewish policy was based largely on church doctrine, by the
19th century, a new, racist, political movement known as anti-
Semitism had taken hold. In the 20th century, anti-Semitism culminated
in the Holocaust, the mass murder of six million European
Jews by the Nazis. Jewish responses to persecution have included
spiritual resistance, political organizing, and armed rebellion.
