Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
LAWS OF LOVE
St. Paul has a unique vision of freedom. We
often think that freedom means I can do what I want
without interference from an outside source, such as a
bureaucracy or a dictator. For most Americans, it
means being able to take care of myself and my family,
hopefully without having to pay too much in
taxes. We usually associate that with the "pursuit of
happiness" without thinking too much about what happiness
is. What makes Paul's idea unique is that his
vision of happiness means serving one another in love.
For Paul, freedom is not so much being free from oppression
as being free to love and serve those around
us.
What would stop us from loving others It
could be fear: "I'm not sure I would be able to do any
good. I'm afraid of going into a bad neighborhood to
help the homeless." Or it could be attachment to possessions
or even to our family--the man in the Gospel
wasn't free to follow Jesus because he thought it
meant leaving his family behind.
Paul talks about another kind of freedom when
he says that following the Spirit means freedom from
the Law (Galatians 5:18). He meant people who were
obsessed with keeping all the laws and customs that
were part of the Jewish tradition. It would be like
someone who goes to Mass on Sunday only because
he doesn't want to break a Church law, or someone
who drives the speed limit only because he doesn't
want to pay a fine. Taken to an extreme, you would
have to memorize every law on the books to be sure
you did not break one. The freedom of the Spirit is a
life lived out of love. A person would go to Mass out
of love for God; a driver would obey the speed limit to
protect other drivers. As long as we love one another,
we wouldn't have to worry about breaking the law, for
God's laws are all examples of how to love one another.
VATICAN APPROVES INCLUSION OF ST.
JOSEPH’S NAME IN MAIN EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS
The Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship
and the Discipline of the Sacraments has included
the name of St. Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary, in
the main Eucharistic Prayers at Mass. The revised
prayers are approved to be used immediately.
The decree Paternas vices (Fatherly care) was
issued May 1 by the Congregation for Divine Worship
and the Discipline of the Sacraments and promulgated
by the authority of Pope Francis. St. Joseph has been
included in the first Eucharistic Prayers since Pope
John XXIII inserted his name in 1962. The new decree
extends the inclusion of St. Joseph to Eucharist Prayers
II, III, and IV.
St. Joseph is widely venerated in the Catholic
Church. In 1870, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him Patron
of the Universal Church, a feast celebrated on March
19. The Vatican’s decree says that St. Joseph “stands
as an exemplary model of the kindness and humility
that the Christian faith raises to a great destiny and
demonstrates the ordinary and simple virtues necessary
for men to be good and genuine followers of Christ.”
STEWARDSHIP
We hope you enjoyed reading
"The Heart that Gives: Seven
Traits of Joyful Stewardship,"
which the Stewardship Committee
handed out last month. This
little booklet has a lot of food for
thought!
Do you sometimes find yourself noticing the things
you don't have rather than what you do have Like
Lucy from "Peanuts" we may not realize the blessings
we have (see pages 6-7). Try this week to stop
before going to bed each night and say out loud at
least five things you are grateful for.
"When we realize how fortunate we are, how good
God is to us, we want to return the favor. We want
to give back. With a grateful heart we want, in turn,
to bless others. We realize that the blessings we
have are not just for our satisfaction, but are given so
that we may do good with them." (page 7)
“ jelly ”
is the food item of the week!
City of God
Book Study
Beginning July 25 from 6:00 – 7:30pm
In the Faith House
St. Augustine's classic book "Concerning the City of
God Against the Pagans" has been considered by some to
be a Christian reply to the charge that Rome was sacked
because it had become Christian. Might Augustine's tome
be relevant today, sixteen hundred years later Come find
out as we engage Augustine in a ten month study of "City
of God."
The ten-month study will be facilitated by Matt
Niedzielski (MA History and Theology) at Holy Trinity
Parish beginning on July 25th at 6 PM.
Please contact the parish at 633-2132
PEACH AND PEAR SALE
Council #582 Knights of
Columbus for Holy Trinity Parish
will once again sell peaches and
pears this summer. Due to severe weather and late
frosts half of the peach crop was lost. The surviving
crop looks good but is the SURVIVING CROP. As
a result, one half of last year’s peach sales will be
allocated to each council for this year. We regret this
inconvenience, but there will not be enough peaches
to go around. Therefore, we must initiate a firstcome,
first-serve and limit one box per customer
policy this year. Pears look good and there will no
be restrictions on pears this year.
Prices are as follows: 18 lbs. peaches-$31; 10
lbs. peaches-$20; 20 lb. pears-$30; 10 lb. pears $19.
Our Knights will start taking order this weekend and
each weekend thereafter until our quota of 601 lb.
peaches is reached. Thank you for your support.
Looking for a few good men!!
The Knights of Columbus are practicing
Catholic men, 18 years of age and
older. They meet at the Hope House
for meals, fellowship, and more! For
more information about the Knights, and to learn
how to join, contact our Grand Knight, Kevin Flynn
at 632-3698.
Reflections on the Apostles’ Creed
I believe in the Holy Spirit...
In John’s Gospel we read how Jesus
promises to send the Holy Spirit as
our advocate: “And I will ask the
Father, and He will give you another
Advocate, to be with you forever.
This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot
receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.
You know Him because He abides with you, and He
will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)
At Pentecost we celebrate the Holy Spirit descending
on the Apostles in tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit
animates them with great zeal to bear witness to Jesus
Christ.
How does the Holy Spirit guide my life Do I live out
my faith with the zeal of the Spirit
Post Abortion Healing Retreat
If you are struggling from having had an abortion,
experience the healing presence and love of Jesus
Christ on a Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend Retreat.
Rachel’s Vineyard retreats address the soul wounds
that run deep in many women and men who have
had an abortion and in those who have helped another
have an abortion. The retreat is open to individuals,
couples, and grandparents. The retreat experience
combines Scriptural exercises, discussions
and sharing, the Sacrament of Reconciliation with a
compassionate priest, a Memorial service, and a
Mass of the Resurrection. Come and experience
God’s tender, healing mercy in this Catholic, scripturally
based program suitable for all Christian denominations.
Memories of condemnation, abandonment, pain, and
confusion are handled with care and replaced by reconciliation.
The retreat offers a beautiful opportunity
to experience God’s unconditional love, forgiveness,
compassion, and His peace with others who are also
in need of healing. A priest and a licensed counselor
are in attendance throughout the weekend. Participation
is completely confidential.
The next retreat is July 12-14. For more information
Summer Music Ministry
Many parishioners prepare for
weekend liturgies by reading/
praying the scriptures ahead of
time. During the summer, parishioners
are invited to prepare
more fully for weekend Masses
by rehearsing the music. Come to Wednesday evening
rehearsals (see dates below) to practice and
learn the songs and hymns that will be used for the
weekend Masses. There is no obligation to join the
music ministry or even to sit in the music area. Just
come and sing to praise our Lord! Bring the
whole family! Summer rehearsal dates are July 3 &
17 & 31, Aug. 14 & 28 at 7:00 pm in the church.
Communion to the Homebound
Do you know someone in our parish who is temporarily
or permanently homebound or in a nursing
home and would like to receive communion weekly
Please call Judie Scott at 550-0943 to schedule a
homebound visit or Angela Rizor at 636-1041 to
schedule a nursing home visit. If you are an Extraordinary
Minister who would like to visit and take
communion to the sick and homebound, please call
Judie to volunteer for residences and Angela to volunteer
for nursing homes.
Notice: If your loved one has recovered
please call the office to remove their name
from the prayer list to make room for
others in need of prayer. Thank you.
