Devotion
Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service
and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer.
Romans 12:1(GNT)
I remember once seeing an interview where people on the street
were asked what makes a person a Christian. Some of the answers
were interesting and some given by children were hilarious. But
what came through fairly consistently was the belief that what made
people Christians is that they go to church.
Sunday worship is certainly a privilege and a joyful way to start the week. But being a
Christian doesn’t begin when worship commences, or end once worship finishes on
Sunday. It continues all the rest of the weekly life. Paul refers to this in the following
verse, this time from the Message Bible:
1So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday,
ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—
and place it before God as an offering.
We find ourselves in so many settings during the week, and each of these is an
opportunity to worship God and to share God’s love. Whether we are working in a
factory, an office, in the vineyard, at home with small children, caring for aging parents
or parenting our children, each area of everyday life provides us with an opportunity to
be a living worship, to acknowledge there is a Creator bigger than ourselves, one who
loves us so much that he came to live amongst us in the ordinariness of everyday life.
When we start to see our everyday life and work as a source of worship to God, it
gives us the opportunity to be transformed by it. Our work becomes not just something
that we have to do to make ends meet and pay the bills (as vital as these are!) but adds
a deeper dimension by putting a whole new layer of joy and purpose behind what we
do. What a privilege to be able to grow in God’s love and share that love whilst we
go about our everyday activities!
GONSKI REVIEW
Perhaps you have heard of the Gonski Review in the media, and wondered
what it was all about. In education circles, the Review has loomed fairly
large on the horizon, as it holds huge implications for schools of every
sector, ie Government, Catholic and Independent, into the future. The
Gonski Review, named for the head of the review panel David Gonski, is
an analysis of the way schools are currently funded, including 26 findings,
and contains 41 recommendations for how schools should be funded in the
future. The aim is to make the provision of education as fair and equitable
as possible, to meet the needs of all children in Australia.
A major finding of the Gonski review is that children from a low socioeconomic,
disadvantaged and/or indigenous background continue to
experience an unacceptably low link with educational opportunities
compared with the rest of Australia’s children. The review cites that only
56% of students from these backgrounds completed Year 12 compared to
75% from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, and that Australia has a
significant gap between the highest and lowest achieving students
compared to other OECD nations. The reasons are complex, but the
Gonski Review is calling for funds to be made most available to the schools
and children who most need them. I believe that the majority of Australians
would see this as an imperative – all the children of our nation need to be
able to access an education that allows them to have the same life
opportunities as others, no matter what situation life has dealt them.
One of the recommendations for a new funding system is that it be built
around an SRS – Schools Resources Standard. This recommendation says
that each Australian student should be funded at a base rate, no matter
where or in what system they attend school. On top of this base rate
would be additional loadings, for instance if schools have a significant
proportion of students from lower socio economic backgrounds or
indigenous students.
Another area of additional loading is disability. It is recommended that
funds for disability now follow the student, no matter what educational
system they choose to attend. This is something for which the independent
sector has been lobbying for years and are cautiously pleased to see
included, although it remains unclear at this point in time the exact details
of what will be considered.
What does this potentially mean for us It is likely Independent schools
will, in the future, be given their funding using the SRS as a starting base.
The extra loading Independent schools receive will vary depending very
much on their socio economic location, number of indigenous students,
number of students with disability, students with English as a second
language, remoteness, whether Primary or Secondary school etc.
Cont. p.3…
Cont. from p.2…
The Gonski Review supports the notion that all children,
no matter what sector they belong to, should have at
least a portion of their education supported by
Government funding. It continues to be clear that the
inclusion of Independent Schools in education is an
important tool in assisting the Government to meet the
needs of all Australian students.
The Gonski Review indicated that $5 billion would be
needed to meet the challenges of the new funding
agreement. To date neither federal nor state
governments have made a commitment to the massive
injection of extra funding that is required to bring in these
` changes, despite making the promise that no student or
family will be worse off because of changes in
Government funding. It is important that we continue to
lobby our local politicians to ensure that the voice of the
independent sector is heard and that choice in education
remains a reality.
AISSA (Association of Independent Schools of South
Australia) and LEA (Lutheran Education Australia) is
campaigning on our behalf on a variety of issues,
particularly that consistent and reliable methods of data
collection are used to gain family socioeconomic
background for the calculation of funding eg national
census data. This is to ensure that an accurate picture is
gained of the need of each school, as plenty of
Independent schools service areas of lower socio
economic need, whose students do not come from
wealthy backgrounds, but are sent by parents who are
making a sacrifice in order to have their children attend
an Independent school.
The Government is currently in a consultation phase with
each sector where the model of reformed funding
presented in the Gonski Review is being tested and
analysed against a selection of real school situations.
As this work progresses it will become clearer what the
implications are for individual schools such as St Jakobi.
I will keep the school community informed as details
become available.
May God bless your week,
New Families’ mid year orientation – Friday 25 May 2012
Thank you to everyone who donated yummy food to welcome the new St Jakobi families. We hope the families enjoyed their
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – Friday 25 May 2012
Thank you so much to Kaylene Jaensch for once again coordinating this event. We raised $130 for the Cancer Council which is a
fantastic effort. Thank you to those people who contributed morning tea and to the families, friends and staff who donated their
money towards this fantastic cause.
Quite a few families are understandably asking where the monies that we fundraise are allocated. I am in the process of
compiling some information to inform the new St Jakobi families (and the not so new families) of how much money we made last
year and where the money was allocated. Please note that when I came on board as President 2½ years ago the committee and I
decided that we would fundraise for a new playground for our children. That is still in the pipeline, and whilst we cannot pay for
the whole playground, we intend to contribute as much as we can. In the meantime, we have purchased substantial items for the
benefit of our school and will continue to support the library, pastoral care, school support unit, class resources and Year 7
graduation, to name a few. We have some exciting ideas that will directly benefit our children and can’t wait to share them with
you once they are underway. Please understand that we are volunteers who are working together, with the help of St Jakobi
families and staff, for the benefit of our kids. Please be patient with us whilst we get some information regarding our fundraising
out to you.
Thank you so much to everyone who supports us in our fundraising endeavours.
Kind regards and blessings
