Barossa Airshow 2011 Take 2 is shaping up to be absolutely amazing! A big
thank you to Justin McDonald who has given his time to create an e-news of
Barossa Airshow updates that will go to various groups to keep everyone up to
date with Airshow news.
Watch out for the first email, to be sent out to our school community tomorrow.
Feel free to forward e-news on to your friends, family and business contacts –
let’s get the word out there about this fantastic day.
Thank you to all those who have already returned their workforce forms. So far
we have received close to 50 offers to help with the Airshow. This is just under
a 1/3 of the helpers required on the day. Keep the forms coming in. Your
help is very much appreciated. For those families who may not have received
a note, or may have lost their note, a second workforce note will be sent home
next week.
MONEY - 2/3 Miss Juers Class
As part of their maths unit on Money,
students in Year 2/3 created their
own shops.
They then used play money to ‘go
shopping’ in their classroom, buying
items others had made.

New Home Wanted For
Our School Organ !
We have a much loved organ in need of a new home.
Over the years the use of the organ has diminished and
it has been a long time since anyone has played it.
Instead of letting it sit in the background gathering
dust, we would like to offer it to a loving home where it
will be able to shine and create music once more.
If you are this loving home please contact Kathryn Krieg ASAP.
AUGUST 2011
The 1/2/3 class braved the cold wintery weather to go on an
excursion to the Mt Barker Water Treatment plant and to the
Laratinga wetlands. We had a fantastic time finding out about
what happens to our water once it goes down the drain. We
especially liked finding out about the filters which had tiny holes
that you can only just see with your eyes! We went to the
Laratinga wetlands to find out about the role of Macro
invertebrates. Paul and Emma collected some Macro
invertebrates for us to study.
They were awesome!
Year 3/4 and 5 Excursion
Adelaide Planetarium
On Monday of Week 4, the Year 3/4 and Year 5 students travelled to Mawson Lakes to the Adelaide Planetarium to learn more about the solar
system as a part of our inquiry ‘How does the solar system affect us?’. We learnt about the different constellations and stars in the galaxy, about
the planets and the proposed SKA telescope, which will enable astrologists to view never before seen images of the solar system. We also
watched a movie about some of the implications for astronauts travelling into space.
It was exciting to learn more about astronauts and space. We liked learning about
the stars and where they are in the sky. Our favourite part of being at the
Planetarium was seeing the dangers of being in space in the cartoon.
April and Lily
On the excursion, we learnt that not all star signs appear in the sky at the
same time. Some appear in winter and others in summer.
We went into a dome, it turned dark and then we could see stars and planets
on the roof. We learnt that NASA may be building the biggest ever telescope,
called SKA, in either Australia or Africa.
Sarah and Lauren
It was really good how our tour guide explained how some of the planets were
discovered. We learnt interesting things about the planets and the solar system.
Talia, Hayley and Ruby.
We went to the UniSA Planetarium and we learnt that the space suit has to protect
from all dangers in space like extreme heat and radiation.
James and Connor
Our favourite part of the excursion was seeing the constellations.
Zac, Josh and Rhys
We learnt that the SKA telescope has to be away from cities so it could be built
in Australia or in Africa. It is made up of 3000 little telescopes and will be built
and running in 10 years.
Cosmic Cluster 2011
Last week 5 St Jakobi year 6/7 students attended the annual
‘Cosmic Cluster Camp’ at Woodhouse Crafers. Kendall
Allignton, Sarah Hoffman, Matthew Kazla, Hayden Skiparis
and Archie Smith were selected to attend the camp along with
50 other students from 8 Lutheran Schools. The students took
part in electives of their choice which included 2D and 3D art,
Digital story Writing, Forensic Science, Music and Philosophy.
This year Active Ed, a group based at Woodhouse, offered the
students problem solving where they took part in a 2 hours of
outdoor activities’ including shelter construction and gheeta
board races. Commissioner Mal Hyde spoke to the students
about the challenges of police work and answered many
questions.
A quiz and talent evening were also run for the students.
Challenge Hill was a highlight with many obstacles for he
students to conquer. Morning dance sessions were held and the
camp finished with each of the elective group presenting their
work to a gathering of parents before the camp concluded. The
students had a great time learning new skills and meeting new
friends from other Lutheran School communities.
Thank you so very much to the families, friends and carers of St Jakobi who continue to contribute to our fundraising which assists
