YEAR 12 PARENTS UCAS INFORMATION EVENING
Wednesday, 27 th April 2011 change of date (Previously in calendar as Thursday 28th April)
We are planning to hold a UCAS Information Evening on Wednesday, 27 th April at 7.00pm in the school hall. The
information evening is designed for the parents of all Year 12 students considering making an application to university in
the next academic year, and will provide information about the UCAS application process in general, how this process is
supported by the school, researching courses and preparing for and writing effective Personal Statements. There will also
be an opportunity to ask questions. As part of our Careers’ Day, Year 12 students have already begun to learn about the
UCAS process and will receive a full programme of preparation lessons once they return from study leave in June. For this
reason, students are not expected to attend the information evening.
If you wish to attend, please email Mrs L Milton-Merrison on 6thformadmin@sjl.herts.sch.uk
SPECIALISMS
This term we have begun planning for our biennial Arts & Culture Festival. This fantastic event runs in the last
week of the Summer term and all students from years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 will be involved. Students will enjoy a
range of arts and culture based activities, including a trip to the Science Museum and IMAX in London. We know
from previous years just how exciting and popular this event is, so we are greatly looking forward to it once again.
More news to follow after Easter.
We have been busy supporting a range of events including Drama GCSE showcases and evening shows such as
Staff and Students in Their Eyes. In the coming weeks we will be helping other local groups and schools with their
own shows and events as part of our community outreach work.
I have been delighted once again by the range and scope of student films produced this term, including some
fantastic music videos and film trailers. In particular, the BTEC students have made some spectacular Horror
Movie Trailers featuring lots of Kensington Gore (stage blood!).
As you may be aware, changes in central government policy and funding may affect some of the Specialist School
activities we can offer in future, but SJL remains committed to maintaining the excellent work across the school
and further afield our Specialist Statuses have afforded, so we can look forward to continuing our work in these
areas to give our students the exceptional opportunities they enjoy so much.
I look forward to sharing some photographs from our Arts & Cultural Festival with you next time.
Term Forthcoming Events
Wednesday 15th June - Year 10 Showcase Evening
This is to showcase the talent of our Year 10 musicians. All GCSE pupils will be taking part but the evening is
open to anyone in Year 10 who would like to perform. I am open to suggestions about all types of music and
ensembles performing! We will also hopefully have some original compositions being performed as well.
