INTRODUCTION<br />
This year, the BIFA <strong>Freight</strong> Service Awards celebrate their 20th anniversary. The<br />
well-established competition has always been sponsored by some eminent companies,<br />
and is recognised as one of the most prestigious in the industry, with the awards<br />
themselves becoming increasingly more coveted every year.<br />
The competition encourages and rewards high standards and professionalism, representing<br />
the ultimate recognition of special achievements in different sectors of the industry. Past<br />
finalists and winners have been able to feel very proud of their certificates and trophies,<br />
as well as benefiting from enhanced company profiles through substantial media coverage<br />
in the trade press, and high visibility at the awards ceremony itself.<br />
The ceremony luncheon is an annual event on the industry calendar. This year’s special<br />
20th anniversary function will take place on Thursday 22 January 2009 at its traditional venue,<br />
The Brewery, in the City of London, and will be hosted by the Rt. Hon. Michael Portillo. This<br />
gathering of some 450 BIFA members and their guests provides a very valuable opportunity<br />
to praise the well-deserving winners, as well as networking with colleagues, customers and<br />
other industry representatives.<br />
BIFA looks forward to yet another successful competition with a large number of entrants.<br />

<strong>British</strong> Airways World Cargo is delighted to continue to support the BIFA Awards for another year with its<br />

served to six, and the total flights to India to 48 each week. This new route will increase cargo capacity to and from<br />

The Environment category is open to companies wishing to present a specific ‘green’<br />
initiative or case study which shows consideration for the environment, or demonstrates<br />

OCEAN FREIGHT AWARD<br />

The Ocean <strong>Freight</strong> category (previously named ‘Deep Sea’) is open to companies, including<br />
NVOCs, providing ocean freight services and multi-modal transport operations.<br />

Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) is the UK’s second largest container terminal, handling some 45% of the<br />
UK’s entire sea-borne trade with the Far East and an annual throughput exceeding 1.9 million TEU. The terminal<br />
handles 14 deep-sea vessels each week linking Southampton with the Middle East, India, Far East, China, Canada,<br />
USA East and West Coast and the Caribbean. Up to a further four weekly feeder services call at the terminal.<br />
In recent years SCT has embarked on a number of projects designed to improve the efficiency and capacity of<br />
the container terminal. During 2007, SCT expanded the terminal footprint by 23.5 additional acres, purchased 15<br />
new straddle carriers and recruited and trained over 100 operational staff. <strong>2008</strong> will see the terminal’s two new super<br />
post-panamax gantry cranes with an outreach of 22 containers wide commissioned into operation with a further<br />
two super post-panamax gantry cranes of the same specification being delivered into operation in August 2009.<br />
With an increase in feeder services from the terminal, the prospect of increased rail services, the rail gauge<br />
enhancement project enabling 9’ 6” containers to be carried on standard wagons adding to the highly acclaimed<br />
Vehicle Booking System (VBS) for road haulage, SCT and the Port of Southampton present a highly attractive service<br />
offering for importers and exporters.<br />

minimum of two years’ employment in the freight industry. Entrants must describe their career<br />

By entering this Award, individuals create their perfect chance to be recognised as the UK’s best Young <strong>Freight</strong><br />
Forwarder, whilst giving their employer the benefits of greater publicity and visibility.<br />

Entry Fee £75.00 per category<br />
Please complete the appropriate entry form included at the back of this brochure<br />
for the award categories you wish to apply for. On receipt of your entry form, you<br />
will be sent a Submission Pack. The sooner you submit your entry form, the more<br />
time you will have to complete your submission.<br />
You will be required to put forward a detailed 2,000 word submission, in a standard<br />
format set by BIFA, for each of the categories entered. The submission should<br />
consist of a detailed description of a relevant service/project for each category,<br />
such as a specific project or case study, the development of a new service for a<br />
particular customer, or a more generic example of good practice.<br />
Your submission will need to demonstrate excellence through improved customer<br />
service levels which have been achieved by means of trade facilitation, value-added<br />
services and cost-saving initiatives. A limited amount of supporting documentation<br />
can be included. A preliminary judges’ meeting will take place to select four<br />
finalists in each category.<br />
One winner in each category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on<br />
Thursday 22 January 2009.<br />

The Main Awards Judging Panel will comprise members of the BIFA Secretariat,<br />
independent industry experts, and representatives from sponsor companies.<br />

Young <strong>Freight</strong> Forwarder Award entrants are required to complete the appropriate<br />
entry form included at the back of this brochure, and send this in together with<br />
their submission consisting of:<br />
•a CV;<br />
• a career statement detailing any special achievements and objectives for<br />
the future;<br />
• a training and development record; and<br />
• an article of up to 700 words on ‘What will be the impact of the Authorised<br />
Economic Operator (AEO) on freight forwarders and the supply chain’ to be<br />
evaluated by the Young <strong>Freight</strong> Forwarder Award Judging Panel.<br />
Four finalists will be chosen by the Young <strong>Freight</strong> Forwarder Award Judging Panel.<br />
Finalists will be invited to a face-to-face interview, to discuss the finalist’s career in<br />
the past, present and future. One winner, out of four finalists’, will be chosen and<br />
announced at the BIFA Awards Ceremony on Thursday 22 January 2009.<br />

THE CEREMONY<br />
THURSDAY 22 JANUARY 2009<br />
The BIFA <strong>Freight</strong> Service Awards is celebrating its 20th anniversary in <strong>2008</strong>.<br />
The competition will culminate in an industry gathering at the BIFA Annual<br />
Lunch and Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 22 January<br />
2009 at The Brewery in Chiswell Street, London EC1. This event is attended<br />
by some 450 people including BIFA members, their customers, industry<br />
figures and representatives from the trade press.<br />
Following a Drinks Reception, the event host presents all category finalists<br />
with a framed certificate on the main stage of the impressive vaulted Porter<br />
Tun Room, after which guests can enjoy their three course seated luncheon.<br />
An overview of all the finalists’ submissions is given in a dynamic audiovisual<br />
presentation, prior to the category sponsor announcing the winner.<br />
A representative from each award-winning company will be honoured with<br />
the Winner’s Trophy – a symbol of achieving industry excellence.<br />
